ABSTRACT
Considering the environmental impact and health risks caused by oily wastewater in the petrochemical industry, it is crucial to develop more efficient separation techniques than traditional methods, such as membrane separation, for treating stable emulsions enriched with natural surfactants. This study investigated the preparation of dense cellulose acetate membranes from a low-cost biomass precursor (Luffa cylindrica) and their modification with graphene oxide (GO) and TiO2 nanoparticles, aiming to obtain a polymeric nanocomposite with good flux characteristics and selectivity for the treatment of oil/water emulsions. The materials obtained were characterized using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy, along with optical and scanning electron microscopy, among others. The membranes were prepared by the casting technique and modified with the above-mentioned nanostructured materials. Flux analyses with petroleum emulsion revealed that membranes modified with GO and TiO2 nanoparticles showed significant improvements in antifouling resistance compared to unmodified membranes. These enhanced properties highlight the potential of modified cellulose acetate membranes for application in industrial wastewater treatment.

Parenting a child on the autism spectrum presents particular challenges that can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and depression among family members. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of mental disorders in first-degree relatives of individuals on the autism spectrum. This article adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines, including studies indexed in PubMed/Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), and SciELO. Nineteen articles met eligibility criteria for the systematic review. Using a random-effects model (N = 93,876), we found a pooled prevalence of affective disorders of 13% in mothers of people on the autism spectrum (95% CI 7-21%; I2 = 99%, p < 0.01). Additionally, another random-effects model pointed out that first-degree relatives of people on the autism spectrum (N = 93,263) were more likely to present affective disorders than relatives of people with neurotypical development (N = 152,455) (pooled OR: 2.17; 95% CI 1.81-2.61). Careful assessment for mental disorders in parents and siblings of individuals on the autism spectrum is crucial to ensure appropriate treatment for these family members. This approach can also contribute to optimizing care for the individuals on the autism spectrum.
ABSTRACT
Probiogenomics can provide important insights bout probiotic candidate bacteria. This study aimed to perform an in-depth genomic characterization of the probiotic candidate Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CNPC024 to investigate its probiosis mechanisms, identify metabolic pathways that might benefit the host, and improve the safety assessment for this strain to be effectively used as a probiotic. After whole-genome sequencing in Illumina MiSeq platform, the de novo genome assembly resulted in a 3.2 Mb draft genome. According to the Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) analysis with 46 randomly validated probiotic LAB belonging to the Lactobacillaceae family, the strain showed a 99% nucleotide identity with other L. plantarum probiotic species. We identified a set of determinants conferring tolerance to bile salts and low pH conditions, as well as temperature, oxidative and osmotic stressors via the glutathione-glutaredoxin system (Grxs). As a ßgalactosidaseproducing strain, it has the potential to be used in fermented dairy products for lactose-intolerant individuals. There were no significant hits for transferable antibiotic-resistance genes. We also identified gene clusters associated with production of bacteriocins (plantaricins E, F and K). Lastly, we detected metabolic pathways associated with the production of tryptophan-derived metabolites that could potentially modulate the host's immune responses.

Context In vitro embryo production in pigs is an important tool for advancing biomedical research. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) circumvents the polyspermy problems associated with conventional IVF in porcine. However, the suboptimal efficiency for ICSI in pigs requires new strategies to increase blastocyst formation rates. Aim To investigate novel methods for assisted activation using the zinc chelator 1,10-phenanthroline (PHEN), and to improve embryo developmental competence and quality of ICSI porcine blastocyst. Methods ICSI embryos were treated with PHEN after or before sperm injection, recording pronuclear formation, blastocyst rate and the expression of SMARCA4, OCT4, SOX2 and CDX2. Key results Neither electrical nor PHEN significantly improves pronuclear formation rates before or after ICSI. Following in vitro culture to the blastocyst stage, no significant differences were observed in developmental rates among the groups. Moreover, the use of PHEN did not alter the total cell number or the expression of OCT4, SOX2 and CDX2 in pig ICSI blastocysts. Conclusions Assisted oocyte activation with PHEN does not affect the preimplantation development of ICSI-derived pig embryos. Implications These results hold significance in refining and advancing the application of assisted oocyte activation techniques. They offer insights into addressing fertility issues and propelling advancements in human and animal reproductive medicine.

INTRODUCTION: The need for safe anesthetic agents with minimal side effects has led to the development of remimazolam, a new benzodiazepine designed to be an alternative to the commonly used drug propofol, which has significant hemodynamic effects. This study aims to compare the hemodynamic effects of remimazolam with propofol during general anesthesia. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic search was conducted in Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and PubMed databases on 13/02/2023, following the recommendations of Cochrane Handbook and the PRISMA statement. The measure of association used was Risk Ratio (RR) or standardized mean difference, with 95% confidence intervals (CI) and 95% Prediction intervals (PI). An additional search was conducted on 04/09/2023. A Trial Sequential Analysis and a GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) evidence table were conducted based on the editor's recommendation. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: After applying eligibility criteria and removing duplicates, 16 randomized clinical trials comprising 1951 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Significant associations favoring remimazolam over propofol were observed in the following aspects: intraoperative hypotension events (RR=0.47; 95% CI=0.41 to 0.54; 95% PI=0.40 to 0.55); frequency of vasoactive drug administration (RR=0.54; 95% CI=0.46 to 0.64; 95% PI=0.41 to 0.74); intraoperative bradycardia (RR=0.39; 95% CI=0.27 to 0.57; 95% PI=0.26 to 0.66); mean arterial pressure at induction (MD=7.77; 95% CI=6.00 to 9.55; 95% PI=4.39 to 11.15); heart rate at induction (MD=6.40; 95% CI=4.07 to 8.73; 95% PI=0.33 to 12.48); and heart rate at intubation (MD=6.06; 95% CI=2.33 to 9.78; 95% PI=-5.59 to 17.71). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that remimazolam induces fewer cardiorespiratory depressant effects and has a more favorable side effect profile compared to propofol during general anaesthesia.

Education plays a crucial role in the adaptation and broader societal inclusion of immigrant students and their families. The current study explored the inclusion of migrants in Ecuador's school system as a fundamental tenet of protecting their health and well-being. We conducted a thematic analysis of 13 policy documents, 12 national laws and international agreements, and 31 key informant interviews, applying a human rights lens. We find that, although the 2008 Ecuadorian Constitution and migration laws protect the right of migrants to health and education, key informants argue that these laws are poorly implemented. Furthermore, they agree that the health sector generally does not consider education as a relevant setting for health. In contrast, the public education sector and non-profit organizations at the national and local levels appear to recognize the importance of coordination across the health and education sectors, including school-based initiatives for migrant inclusion.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant and its sublineages continue to cause COVID-19-associated pediatric hospitalizations, severe disease, and death globally. BNT162b2 and CoronaVac are the main vaccines used in Chile. Much less is known about the Wuhan-Hu-1 strain-based vaccines in the pediatric population compared to adults. Given the worldwide need for booster vaccinations to stimulate the immune response against new Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2, we characterized the humoral and cellular immune response against Omicron variant BA.1 in a pediatric cohort aged 10 to 16 years who received heterologous vaccination based on two doses of CoronaVac, two doses of CoronaVac (2x) plus one booster dose of BNT162b2 [CoronaVac(2x) + BNT162b2 (1x)], two doses of CoronaVac plus two booster doses of BNT162b2 [CoronaVac(2x) + BNT162b2 (2x)], and three doses of BNT162b2. We observed that the [CoronaVac(2x) + BNT162b2 (2x)] vaccination showed higher anti-S1 and neutralizing antibody titers and CD4 and CD8 T cell immunity specific to the Omicron variant compared to immunization with two doses of CoronaVac alone. Furthermore, from all groups tested, immunity against Omicron was highest in individuals who received three doses of BNT162b2. We conclude that booster vaccination with BNT162b2, compared to two doses of CoronaVac alone, induces a greater protective immunity.

BACKGROUND: Vertical transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi represents approximately 20% of new Chagas disease cases. Early detection and treatment for women of childbearing age and newborns is a public health priority, but the lack of a simple and reliable diagnostic test remains a major barrier. We aimed to evaluate the performance of a point-of-care loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the detection of T cruzi. METHODS: In this proof-of-concept study, we coupled a low-cost 3D printer repurposed for sample preparation and amplification (PrintrLab) to the Eiken T cruzi-LAMP prototype to detect vertically transmitted T cruzi, which we compared with standardised PCR and with the gold-standard algorithm (microscopy at birth and 2 months and serological study several months later). We screened pregnant women from two hospitals in the Bolivian Gran Chaco province, and those who were seropositive for T cruzi were offered the opportunity for their newborns to be enrolled in the study. Newborns were tested by microscopy, LAMP, and PCR at birth and 2 months, and by serology at 8 months. FINDINGS: Between April 23 and Nov 17, 2018, 986 mothers were screened, among whom 276 were seropositive for T cruzi (28·0% prevalence, 95% CI 25·6-31·2). In total, 224 infants born to 221 seropositive mothers completed 8 months of follow-up. Congenital transmission was detected in nine of the 224 newborns (4·0% prevalence, 1·9-7·5) by direct microscopy observation, and 14 more cases were diagnosed serologically (6·3%, 3·6-10·3), accounting for an overall vertical transmission rate of 10·3% (6·6-15·0; 23 of 224). All microscopy-positive newborns were positive by PrintrLab-LAMP and by PCR, while these techniques respectively detected four and five extra positive cases among the remaining 215 microscopy-negative newborns. INTERPRETATION: The PrintrLab-LAMP yielded a higher sensitivity than microscopy-based analysis. Considering the simpler use and expected lower cost of LAMP compared with PCR, our findings encourage its evaluation in a larger study over a wider geographical area. In this study, a total of 248 ground beef samples were analyzed for the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Out of these samples, only one (0.4%) tested positive for STEC. Further analysis using PCR confirmed the presence of all tested genes associated with STEC, including stx1, stx2, eae, ehx, uid, rfbO157, and fliCH7 in this isolate. Interestingly, no STEC strains were detected in the remaining 100 beef cut samples or the 100 chicken cut samples, indicating the absence of detectable STEC contamination in those specific samples. The isolated strain exhibited significant cytotoxic activity in Vero cells, indicating its ability to produce cytotoxic Shiga toxins. To further investigate the strain, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analyses were performed. The resistome analysis revealed the absence of acquired antimicrobial resistance genes, indicating a pan-susceptible phenotype. However, this strain presented chromosomal mutations in gyrA, gyrB, parC, parE, pmrA, pmrB, and folP. Plasmid analysis identified the presence of two plasmids, namely IncFIB(AP001918) and IncFII. The multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) identified the strain as belonging to sequence type (ST) 11, which is associated with E. coli O157:H7 strains. The virulome analysis confirmed the presence of several canonical virulence markers, including stx1, stx2, eae-g01-gamma, ehxA, stx1a-O157, and stx2a-O157. Overall, this study identified for the first time a rare occurrence of STEC contamination in ground beef, with the isolated strain belonging to the highly virulent O157:H7 serotype. These findings contribute to our understanding of STEC prevalence and characteristics in food samples, highlighting the importance of effective food safety measures to prevent potential health risks associated with STEC contamination.

This study focuses on the genomic characterization of a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strain responsible for a severe gastrointestinal infection in a 33-year-old male. The patient initially received sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim treatment, which proved ineffective. Fecal culture confirmed the presence of E. coli displaying a MDR profile to ampicillin, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and tetracycline. Serotyping identified the strain as ONT:H19. Virulence analysis indicated a highly virulent profile with numerous virulence markers. Plasmid analysis uncovered various plasmids carrying both antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes. MLST assigned the strain to ST10955. Phylogenomic analysis revealed similarity to an older Brazilian isolate, suggesting the persistence of a common lineage with evolving antimicrobial resistance. This report highlights the first identification of a multidrug-resistant ST10955 E. coli strain with a wide resistome and virulence potential, emphasizing the importance of ongoing surveillance of E. coli strains due to their potential for severe infections, resistance development, and virulence.

The identification and physical interpretation of arbitrary quantum correlations are not always effortless. Two features that can significantly influence the dispersion of the joint observable outcomes in a quantum bipartite system composed of systems I and II are: (a) All possible pairs of observables describing the composite are equally probable upon measurement, and (b) The absence of concurrence (positive reinforcement) between any of the observables within a particular system; implying that their associated operators do not commute. The so-called EPR states are known to observe (a). Here, we demonstrate in very general (but straightforward) terms that they also satisfy condition (b), a relevant technical fact often overlooked. As an illustration, we work out in detail the three-level systems, i.e., qutrits. Furthermore, given the special characteristics of EPR states (such as maximal entanglement, among others), one might intuitively expect the CHSH correlation, computed exclusively for the observables of qubit EPR states, to yield values greater than two, thereby violating Bell's inequality. We show such a prediction does not hold true. In fact, the combined properties of (a) and (b) lead to a more limited range of values for the CHSH measure, not surpassing the nonlocality threshold of two. The present constitutes an instructive example of the subtleties of quantum correlations.

Enhancing grain yield is a primary goal in the cultivation of major staple crops, including wheat. Recent research has focused on identifying the physiological and molecular factors that influence grain weight, a critical determinant of crop yield. However, a bottleneck has arisen due to the trade-off between grain weight and grain number, whose underlying causes remain elusive. In a novel approach, a wheat expansin gene, TaExpA6, known for its expression in root tissues, was engineered to express in the grains of the spring wheat cultivar Fielder. This modification led to increases in both grain weight and yield without adversely affecting grain number. Conversely, a triple mutant line targeting the gene TaGW2, a known negative regulator of grain weight, resulted in increased grain weight but decreased grain number, potentially offsetting yield gains. This study aimed to evaluate the two aforementioned modified wheat genotypes (TaExpA6 and TaGW2) alongside their respective wild-type counterparts. Conducted in southern Chile, the study employed a Complete Randomized Block Design with four replications, under well-managed field conditions. The primary metrics assessed were grain yield, grain number, and average grain weight per spike, along with detailed measurements of grain weight and dimensions across the spike, ovary weight at pollination (Waddington's scale 10), and post-anthesis expression levels of TaExpA6 and TaGW2. Results indicated that both the TaExpA6 and the triple mutant lines achieved significantly higher average grain weights compared to their respective wild types. Notably, the TaExpA6 line did not exhibit a reduction in grain number, thereby enhancing grain yield per spike. By contrast, the triple mutant line showed a reduced grain number per spike, with no significant change in overall yield. TaExpA6 expression peaked at 10 days after anthesis (DAA), and its effect on grain weight over the WT became apparent after 15 DAA. In contrast, TaGW2 gene disruption in the triple mutant line increased ovary size at anthesis, leading to improved grain weight above the WT from the onset of grain filling. These findings suggest that the trade-off between grain weight and number could be attributed to the overlapping of the critical periods for the determination of these traits.

Objectives: To investigate the activities of ceftolozane/tazobactam and imipenem/relebactam against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from hospitalized patients in Mexico in 2017-2021. Methods: MICs were determined by CLSI broth microdilution and interpreted using CLSI M100 breakpoints. ß-Lactamase genes were identified in ceftolozane/tazobactam-, imipenem/relebactam-, and/or imipenem-non-susceptible isolates. Results: Ceftolozane/tazobactam and imipenem/relebactam inhibited 89% and 99% of E. coli isolates (nâ=â2337), and 87% and 94% of K. pneumoniae isolates (nâ=â1127). Sixty-four percent of E. coli and 47% of K. pneumoniae had an ESBL non-carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (ESBL non-CRE) phenotype. Eighty-six percent and 91% of ESBL non-CRE E. coli and K. pneumoniae were ceftolozane/tazobactam susceptible, and 99.9% and 99.8% were imipenem/relebactam susceptible. Ceftolozane/tazobactam was the most active agent studied against P. aeruginosa (nâ=â1068; 83% susceptible), 9-28 percentage points higher than carbapenems and comparator ß-lactams excluding imipenem/relebactam (78% susceptible). Ceftolozane/tazobactam remained active against 35%-58%, and imipenem/relebactam against 32%-42%, of P. aeruginosa in meropenem-, piperacillin/tazobactam-, and cefepime-non-susceptible subsets. The majority of isolates of ceftolozane/tazobactam-non-susceptible E. coli carried an ESBL, whereas among ceftolozane/tazobactam-non-susceptible K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa, the majority carried carbapenemases. The most prevalent carbapenemase observed among E. coli (estimated at 0.7% of all isolates), K. pneumoniae (4.8%) and P. aeruginosa (10.0%) was an MBL. Almost all imipenem/relebactam-non-susceptible E. coli and K. pneumoniae carried MBL or OXA-48-like carbapenemases, whereas among imipenem/relebactam-non-susceptible P. aeruginosa, 56% carried MBL or GES carbapenemases. Conclusions: Ceftolozane/tazobactam and imipenem/relebactam may provide treatment options for patients infected with ß-lactam-non-susceptible Gram-negative bacilli, excluding isolates carrying an MBL- or OXA-48-like carbapenemase.

Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to ascertain the levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and osteopontin (OPN), alongside osteoprotegerin/RANKL ratio (ORR), and assess their association with the SYNTAX score and ascertain the potential of these molecules as predictive markers for risk, aiding in risk stratification. Eventually, they could potentially be employed even before angiography to gauge the severity of coronary lesions. Methods: Prospective study with 147 participants, 101 (69%) were men, with an average age of 60. We included three groups - (1) patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (ACS-PCI), (2) patients without ACS who underwent coronary angiography for an indication other than ischemia and did not undergo PCI (non-ACS without), and (3) one asymptomatic subject. OPG and OPN were measured. ORR and SYNTAX scores were calculated. The association between OPG and OPN levels and important clinical variables was investigated. Results: OPG levels in Group 1 were lower compared to Groups 2 and 3 (controls), Group 1 (490 pg/mL) versus Group 2 (829 pg/mL) versus Group 3 (845 pg/mL) (p = 0.001). OPG had lower levels in patients with coronary artery stenosis versus without stenosis. A decrease in ORR was shown in all groups and no association with the SYNTAX score. Conclusion: OPG and OPN (and ORR) levels are decreased in patients with ACS and show no correlation with the SYNTAX score. As an exploratory study, our work suggest that increased OPG and OPN levels in non-ACS patients may have, in fact, a protective effect. This study is one of the few with an appropriate control in ACS and reproducibility is necessary mainly with multicenter studies.
Objetivo: El objetivo principal de este estudio es conocer los niveles de OPG y OPN, junto con la ORR, y evaluar su asociación con la puntuación SYNTAX y conocer el potencial de estas moléculas como marcadores predictivos de riesgo, ayudando en la estratificación del riesgo. Con el tiempo, podrían emplearse incluso antes de la angiografía para medir la gravedad de las lesiones coronarias. Métodos: Estudio prospectivo con 147 participantes, 101 (69%) eran hombres, con una edad promedio de 60 años. Se incluyeron tres grupos (1) pacientes con SCA sometidos a ICP (SCA-ICP), (2); pacientes sin SCA sometidos a angiografía coronaria por una indicación distinta a la isquemia y no sometidos a ICP (sin SCA sin) (3) un sujeto asintomático. Se midieron OPG, OPN. Se calcularon las puntuaciones ORR y SYNTAX. Se investigó la asociación entre los niveles de OPG y OPN y variables clínicas importantes. Resultados: Los niveles de OPG en el Grupo 1 fueron más bajos en comparación con los Grupos 2 y 3 (controles). Grupo 1 (490 pg/mL) versus Grupo 2 (829 pg/mL) versus Grupo 3 (845 pg/mL) [p = 0.001]). La OPG tuvo niveles más bajos en pacientes con estenosis de la arteria coronaria versus sin estenosis. Se mostró una disminución en la ORR en todos los grupos y no hubo asociación con la puntuación SYNTAX. Conclusione: Los niveles de OPG OPN (y ORR) están disminuidos en pacientes con SCA y no muestran correlación con la puntuación SYNTAX. Como estudio exploratorio, nuestro trabajo sugiere que los niveles elevados de OPG y OPN en pacientes sin SCA pueden tener, de hecho, un efecto protector. Este estudio es uno de los pocos con un control adecuado en SCA y la reproducibilidad es necesaria principalmente con estudios multicéntricos.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to evaluate Liver-Related Events (LREs), including hepatic decompensation (ascites, hemorrhagic varices and encephalopathy) and Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), as well as changes in liver stiffness during the follow-up period among patients who achieved a Sustained Virological Response (SVR) after treatment for chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection. METHODS: A total of 218 patients with HCV were treated, and those who achieved an SVR were followed up for 3-years. Transient Elastography (TE) using FibroScan® was performed at various time points: before treatment, at the end of treatment, at 6-months post-treatment, at 1-year post-treatment, at 2-years post-treatment, and at 3-years post-treatment. RESULTS: At 6-months post-treatment, a Liver Stiffness Measurement (LSM) cutoff of > 19 KPa was identified, leading to a 14.5-fold increase in the hazard of negative outcomes, including decompensation and/or HCC. The analysis of relative changes in liver stiffness between pre-treatment and 6-months posttreatment revealed that a reduction in LSM of -10 % was associated with a -12 % decrease in the hazard of decompensation and/or HCC, with this trend continuing as the LSM reduction reached -40 %, resulting in a -41 % hazard of decompensation and/or HCC. Conversely, an increase in the relative change during this period, such as an LSM increase of +10 %, led to a + 14 % increase in the hazard of decompensation. In cases where this relative change in LSM was +50 %, the hazard of decompensation increased to +92. CONCLUSION: Transient elastography using FibroScan® can be a good tool for monitoring HCV patients with SVR after treatment to predict LREs in the long term.

We investigated room-temperature metal and ligand K-edge X-ray absorption (XAS) spectra of a complete redox series of cubane-type iron-sulfur clusters. The Fe K-edge position provides a qualitative but convenient alternative to the traditional spectroscopic descriptors used to identify oxidation states in these systems, which we demonstrate by providing a calibration curve based on two analytic methods. Furthermore, high energy resolution fluorescence detected XAS (HERFD-XAS) at the S K-edge was used to measure Fe-S bond covalencies and record their variation with the average valence of the Fe atoms. While the Fe-S(thiolate) covalency evolves linearly, gaining 11 ± 0.4% per bond and hole, the Fe-S(µ3) covalency evolves asystematically, reflecting changes in the magnetic exchange mechanism. A strong discontinuity manifested for superoxidation to the all-ferric state, distinguishing its electronic structure and its potential (bio)chemical role from those of its redox congeners. We highlight the functional implications of these trends for the reactivity of iron-sulfur cubanes.
ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) optimizes the performance of a wheelchair basketball player on precision tasks. METHODS: A right-handed wheelchair basketball player (1.5 points functional class) with myelomeningocele (low lumbar level) participated in this case study. The tDCS neuromodulation protocol was applied throughout 10 interventions of 20 minutes with a current intensity of 2 mA, simultaneously with sport-specific training, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Anodic stimulation was performed on the right cerebellar hemisphere (CB2) and cathodic stimulation in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. A control participant was submitted to a sham-tDCS stimulation protocol for the same period. Functional performance was assessed before the intervention and after the 5th and 10th interventions using "pass accuracy," "free-throw shooting," and "spot shot" tests. Outcome measures were compared using percentage differences between preintervention, intermediate intervention, and postintervention values. RESULTS: There was a gradual increase in the athlete's total and average scores in all tests performed, with an overall improvement of 78% between the baseline and final assessments, while the control participant had an overall improvement of 6.5%. CONCLUSION: The tDCS protocol was effective in improving performance in precision activities in a wheelchair basketball player.

This study critically reevaluates reported Biginelli-like reactions using a Kamlet-Abboud-Taft-based solvent effect model. Surprisingly, structural misassignments were discovered in certain multicomponent reactions, leading to the identification of pseudo three-component derivatives instead of the expected MCR adducts. Attempts to replicate literature conditions failed, prompting reconsideration of the described MCRs and proposed mechanisms. Electrospray ionization (tandem) mass spectrometry, NMR, melting points, elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray analysis exposed inaccuracies in reported MCRs and allowed for the proposition of a complete catalytic cycle. Biological investigations using both pure and "contaminated" derivatives revealed distinctive features in assessed bioassays. A new cellular action mechanism was unveiled for a one obtained pseudo three-component adduct, suggesting similarity with the known dihydropyrimidinone Monastrol as Eg5 inhibitors, disrupting mitosis by forming monoastral mitotic spindles. Docking studies and RMSD analyses supported this hypothesis. The findings described herein underscore the necessity for a critical reexamination and potential corrections of structural assignments in several reports. This work emphasizes the significance of rigorous characterization and critical evaluation in synthetic chemistry, urging a careful reassessment of reported synthesis and biological activities associated with these compounds.

Introduction: In 2017, Chile decriminalized abortion on three grounds: (i) if the pregnant person's life is at risk, (ii) fetal nonviability, and (iii) rape or incest. This multicase study explores the experiences of pregnant people legally entitled to but denied access to legal abortion in Chile. Methods: Through a snowball sampling approach, we recruited adult Chilean residents who sought, were eligible for, and were denied a legal abortion after September 2017. We conducted semistructured interviews with participants to explore their experiences in seeking and being denied legal abortions. We recorded and transcribed the interviews, then coded and analyzed the transcriptions to identify common themes. Results: We identified four women who met the eligibility criteria. The interviews revealed five common themes in their experiences: (i) disparate levels of social support in accessing abortion, (ii) abundant access barriers, (iii) forced pregnancy, (iv) abortion stigma, and (v) a failure of the law to provide access to abortion. Discussion and Health Equity Implications: Although the 2017 law expanded legal access to abortion in Chile, significant barriers remain. Compounded with social stigma, and the socioeconomic disparities in abortion access, pregnant people continue to face insurmountable obstacles in obtaining legal abortions, even when their lives are at risk and the pregnancy is not viable. The state must prioritize equity of access to legal abortions. Future studies should continue to explore the challenges people face accessing legal abortion care to inform strategies to ensure people are able to obtain the quality care that they are legally entitled to.
