ABSTRACT
The records of 96 patients with sickle cell disease were studied in relation to various immunological parameters. Age, sex, levels of total and fractionated serum protein and immunoglobulins, serum complements, antierythrocytic antibodies, circulating immune complexes, antiviral antibodies and lymphoid populations were taken into account. No major alterations in humoral immunity were found in this group of panamanian sickle cell patient.

Serum samples were obtained in a 2-year period (November 1, 1984-December 31, 1986) from 136 Panamanian patients with hematologic malignancies identified by a population-based registry designed for studies investigating human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I. Only three patients had clinical and serologic findings of HTLV-I-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). The authors conclude that although classical HTLV-I-associated ATLL occurs in the Panamanian population, it is not as prevalent as in other Caribbean populations.

Durante la enfermedad de Chagas experimental en ratones se ha podido constatar una supresion especifica de la respuesta celular, mientras que, la respuesta humoral se encuentra aumentada, manifestandose ambas situaciones hacia el 60o. dia post-infeccion. La ausencia de respuesta celular especifica y la incrementada produccion de anticuerpos coinciden en un periodo de la cinetica de la infeccion permaneciendo casi invariables hasta el final del estudio. Se sugiere la posibilidad de una intervencion del mismo parasito o de alguno de sus componentes como causa de la modulacion inmune de la respuesta de los animales estudiados

Se observa un efecto mitogenico sobre las celulas normales y no estimuladas por la accion del Ag ND. Esta fraccion potencializa levemente la proliferacion celular en celulas cultivadas con Con-A pero no con LPS. Por el contrario, el Ag D inhibe la proliferacion celular de celulas normales no estimuladas asi como de aquellas estimuladas por Con-A.El Ag D en las dosis de 0.5 y 1.0 ug/50 ul provoca una depresion de la incorporacion de la 3H-Tdr, sobre las celulas normales no estimuladas, sin embargo ninguna toxicidad fue observada utilizando la prueba de exclusion del azul de tripano por las celulas al final del periodo de cultivo. Aqui se podria discutir un efecto citostatico ejercido por esta fraccion
