ABSTRACT

A portable electrical impedance spectroscopy device was developed to monitor the bioimpedance resistive component of bovine meat by injecting a sinusoidal current of 1 mA at 65 kHz. Both right and left longissimus dorsi muscles were trimmed from 4 slaughtered cows. The left muscle portions were frozen to -18 °C for 7 days while the right ones were meantime maintained at 5 °C. Mean value of impedance per length (Ω/cm) of frozen and thawed left samples was 31% lower than that of right non-frozen one (P = 0.0001). It was concluded that the device is reliable for monitoring the maturation of beef meat in situ with the possibility of revealing undeclared freeze-thaw cycles.

ABSTRACT

The thyroid microcarcinoma is definited differentiated carcinoma of max 1 cm in diameter. We have reviewed clinical and histopathological results of 54 consecutive patients with papillary and follicular thyroid microcarcinoma and operated in the our clinic in the period 1985 to 2004. Several variables, such as older age, multifocality, bilateral disease, and extrathyroidal spread at initial assessment, may have some adverse prognostic significance. We recommend total thyroidectomy accompanied by modified neck dissection if enlarged nodes are diagnosed.

ABSTRACT

Thyroid papillary carcinoma, exceptionally, can appear with cervico-lateral metastases in absence of thyroid evident disease. In that case we can have an infected branchial cyst, therefore is very important a correct preoperative diagnosis with FNAB. In literature were described 30 cases of cervico-lateral cystic masses that the histology revealed as occult papillary carcinoma metastases. Our experience is about 80 cases of papillary carcinoma, in only 2 cases the cancer was evident as a tight-elastic tumour in cervico-lateral region, hypoechogenic to the US scan with irregular and thick wall: one of the patient had multinodular goiter; the other one didn't have clinical of US scan character of thyroid disease. FNAB on lymph nodes shows doubtful cells evidence. Both patient had a total thyroidectomy with functional cervico-lateral and MAS lymphadenectomy. In one patient histology showed a papillary carcinoma of 4 mm in the right lobe, in the other patient the cancer was unknown. FNAB, in all doubtful cases, is the most important diagnosis test.

ABSTRACT

A case series of 5 male patients afflicted with breast carcinoma is reported. The Authors describe symptomatology, diagnostic iter, principles of surgical treatment and results. Underlined is the wider surgical demolition in male breast cancer in comparison with females, even if natural history and biological conduct are comparable. This is because in male breast carcinoma the local and remote infiltration is more rapid than female for the less development of breast gland. Finally, indications for radiochemotherapy are comparable to female breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

A Polycentric International Study was performed to evaluate the diagnostic methods in patients with cerebrovascular diseases. New tools and new non-invasive methods were proposed by the 15 centers collaborating in this study. The difficulty of defining a standard method to investigate not invasively and invasively these patients still remains.

ABSTRACT

The correlation between peripheral pressures and skin temperatures was studied by encapsulated liquid crystal (ELC) plates in 66 patients with peripheral arterial disease. The study was also performed to evaluate the correlation between symptoms and temperature in four symptomatic groups of patients (with claudication, rest pain, ischemic ulcerations or gangrene and chronic ulcerations in diabetic patients). The correlation with temperature and pressure was positive (0.99) and so it was that one between symptoms and temperature. This method may be easily used in patients with peripheral arterial disease to evaluate the perfusion of the extremities and to compare bordering areas. Considering these data different new applications of this technique in peripheral vascular disease diagnosis can be suggested. The elevate velocity of the method (about 5 seconds) reveal also very fast variations of the perfusion and this may be useful to study functional decreases of blood pressure.
