ABSTRACT

Spodumene, a lithian mineral found in granitic pegmatites, is a major source of lithium. In situ, multi-year and large-scale (>10s of tons) predictive hydrogeochemical studies can be of great value for informing mine waste rock and tailings management, not least because the material is exposed to the actual climate where it is meant to be stored. However, such studies are rare given their cost and size, and previous ones have focused mainly on sulfide-bearing materials. An experimental field cell filled with spodumene beneficiation tailings was built at the Whabouchi lithium mine site in northern Québec (Canada) and monitored during four consecutive years. In parallel, column laboratory kinetic testing on the same material was conducted for water quality parameters to compare the effect of testing scales on the geochemical behavior. Geochemical results and release rates were overall similar between laboratory and field, and consistent with previously published laboratory results for materials from the same site. The leachates were neutral to slightly alkaline, with ions from feldspars (Ca > Na > K) and residual spodumene (Li) being notable solutes. Concentrations for most solutes surveyed remained higher in the field after four years than in columns at the end of the experiment. One major difference between laboratory and field was a brief (less than 2 years) increase in iron concentrations from the field cell, resulting in Fe-oxyhydroxides precipitation, that was not observed in laboratory. The source of this iron is arguably residual ferrosilicon (used for dense medium separation) and this difference is attributed to the different testing conditions and configurations in the laboratory versus in situ. Field hydrogeological results highlight strong seasonal patterns and the rapid response of this sand-like, sulfide-poor material to ambient temperature changes and wetting-drying events. The tailings both wet and drain rapidly and easily given their water retention curve and the range of matrix suctions recorded during frost-free months. Net infiltration through the tailings was estimated to represent 55% of total precipitation in summer (June-October) 2021. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the environmental behavior of hard rock lithium mine tailings under real, sub-arctic climatic conditions and outlines similarities and differences between laboratory- and field-generated geochemical results.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To quantify test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change for 90 and 95% confidence levels (90MDC, 95MDC) for health-related fitness tests in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Methods: Lower limb muscle strength [hand-held dynamometry (HHD), unilateral heel rise test (UHRT), standing broad jump (SBJ)], muscle endurance [Muscle Power Sprint Test (MPST)] and cardiorespiratory endurance [20-metre Shuttle Run Test (20mSRT)] were evaluated twice (2-7 day interval) in 31 children with DCD (20 males, 9.4 years old ± 2.0). Results: Test-retest reliability was reported as intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (2, 1) 95% confidence interval lower bounds. Values were excellent for MPST (peak and mean power: 0.93, 0.95), good for HHD (0.81-0.88), SBJ (0.82), and the 20mSRT (0.87) and moderate for UHRT (0.74). For HHD, the 90MDC and 95MDC were the largest for hip extensors (14.47, 12.14 Nm) and the smallest for ankle dorsiflexors (1.55, 1.30 Nm). For UHRT, SBJ, MPST and the 20mSRT, these MDC values were 11.90, 9.98 repetitions; 25.49, 21.38 cm; 4.70, 3.94 W (mean power), and 6.45, 5.42 W (peak power) and 0.87, 0.73 (number of stages), respectively. Conclusion: These tests yield reliable test-retest results that can be used to evaluate fitness changes in this group.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This clinical practice guide (CPG) aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for promoting and enhancing the participation and integration of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) into physical activities that take place in the home, school, community, or rehabilitation clinic contexts. Methods: A panel of key stakeholders relevant to these contexts (parents, instructors, rehabilitation professionals) developed evidence-based recommendations using a consensus methodology after reviewing results from a recent systematic review of relevant literature. The quality of the evidence on which the recommendations were based was evaluated (2011 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Levels of Evidence scale) as was the strength of the final CPG recommendations (American Society of Plastic Surgeons Grade Recommendation Scale). Results: Recommendations (n = 50; 36% supported by robust, empirically derived evidence) for the different stakeholder groups fell into three categories: 1) Choose an appropriate activity for your child, 2) Harmonize the activity with the child's interests and abilities, and 3) Help the child learn new movements prior to the activity. Conclusions: This comprehensive CPG provides concrete recommendations, based on the currently available evidence, that can be used by stakeholders to address the physical activity participation and integration needs of children with DCD in a variety of contexts.


Objectif: ces directives cliniques visent à fournir des recommandations basées sur les données probantes pour promouvoir et améliorer la participation et l'intégration des enfants ayant un trouble développemental de la coordination (TDC) à des activités physiques qui se déroulent à la maison, à l'école, dans la communauté ou dans des cliniques de réadaptation. Méthodologie: un groupe d'intervenants clés dans ces contextes (parents, entraineurs, professionnels de la réadaptation) a préparé des recommandations fondées sur des données probantes au moyen d'une méthodologie de consensus, après avoir révisé les résultats d'une récente analyse systématique de publications pertinentes. La qualité des données probantes sur laquelle reposent les recommandations a été évaluée (échelle de qualité des preuves de l'Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine de 2011) de même que les catégories des recommandations définitives tirées des directives (échelle des catégories de recommandations de l'American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Résultats: les recommandations (n = 50; 36 % soutenues par des données probantes empiriques vigoureuses) des divers groupes d'intervenants se déclinaient en trois catégories : 1) choisir une activité appropriée pour l'enfant, 2) harmoniser l'activité selon les intérêts et les capacités de l'enfant, 3) aider l'enfant à s'approprier de nouveaux mouvements pour aller vers l'activité. Conclusions: ces directives cliniques complètes fournissent des recommandations concrètes d'après les données probantes disponibles, que peuvent utiliser les intervenants pour aborder la participation à l'activité physique et les besoins d'intégration des enfants ayant un TDC dans divers contextes.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we combined the results of two controlled trials and examined the relationships between working alliance, telepresence, cognitive change and treatment outcome. Sixty-five participants with a primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) received cognitive behaviour therapy delivered via videoconference. Participants completed measures of working alliance and telepresence after three psychotherapy sessions. They also completed measures of treatment outcome and dysfunctional beliefs (cognitive change) specific to PDA and GAD at pretreatment and posttreatment. Results revealed that telepresence at the fifth session moderated the relationship between the working alliance at the first and fifth sessions. As telepresence increased, its impact on the working alliance diminished. Cognitive change mediated the relationship between the working alliance at the fifth session and treatment outcome.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE) is the most widely used questionnaire for the assessment of children participation. While several cultural adaptations and translations exist, the quality of the methods used to produce them, as well as their psychometric properties, remains unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the different translated and/or culturally adapted versions of the CAPE for children and youth with and without disabilities. METHOD: A search was performed in five electronic databases CINAHL (EBSCO), MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE (ELSEVIER), PSYCINFO (OVID), and WEB OF SCIENCE Core Collection (CLARIVATE), for articles available in French or English with the last update in July 2022. All studies related to a cultural adaptation and/or translation of the CAPE were retained and evaluated based on established guidelines for cross-cultural adaptations and measurement properties. The extraction was done independently by two authors. A critical appraisal of translation and psychometric properties methods was performed. Critical appraisal of the articles was done using the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures tool and the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) methodology. RESULTS: The search identified 642 studies (321 duplicates removed), 16 of which underwent full-text review. Nine studies met all inclusion criteria and underwent analysis. According to the recommended steps for cross-cultural adaptations, one study performed 100% of the steps and two others performed 80%. None of the studies met all the recommendations for the evaluation of psychometric properties. A full evaluation of reliability and internal consistency were reported by 74% of studies. None of the studies reported a full evaluation of responsiveness, agreement and/or construct validity. CONCLUSIONS: This review demonstrated limitations in the robustness of the methods used to develop and evaluate translated and culturally adapted versions of CAPE. To ensure valid and reliable results when conducting future research using the CAPE, it is recommended to fully evaluate the psychometric properties of the existing versions and to produce other translated and culturally adapted versions of the questionnaire.

ABSTRACT

Mine waste classification preceding mining constitutes a proactive solution to classify and segregate mine waste into geo-environmental domains based upon the magnitude of their environmental risks. However, upstream classification requires multi-disciplinary and integrated approaches. This study integrates geological modeling and kinetic modeling to inform upstream mine waste classification based on the pH generated from the main acid-generating and acid-neutralizing reactions once the mine solid waste is stored in oxidizing conditions. Geological models were used to depict the ante-mining spatial distribution of the main reactive minerals: pyrite, albite and calcite. Subsequently, the corresponding block models were created. The dimension of the elementary voxels for each block model was set at 40х40х40 m for this study. The kinetic modeling approach was performed using PHREEQC and VS2DRTI to consider unsaturated conditions. The kinetic modeling simulated a 1D column for each voxel. The column simulates the excavated state of the hosting rock involving kinetic reactions and unsaturated flow under highly oxidizing conditions. Subsequently, the resulting pH for different intervals of time was assigned to its respective voxel. The outcome consists of a spatio-temporal visualization of the pH defining ante-mining geo-environmental domains, thereby providing the opportunity for formulating proactive management measures regarding the hazardous geo-environmental domains.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: During adolescence, changes in the circadian and homeostatic systems, combined with psychosocial factors, create a phase delay in the sleep of adolescents. These changes in sleep are associated with increased sleep difficulties and a shortened sleep duration, which has a negative impact on daytime functioning of adolescents. Some studies showed that teenage girls report worse sleep quality and shorter sleep duration than boys during adolescence. The objective of this study was to investigate gender differences in the impact of sleep difficulties and sleepiness on daytime functioning in adolescents and to measure which aspect of sleep may interfere with daytime functioning in boys and girls. METHOD: A total of 731 adolescents (311 boys, 420 girls; age 13 to 17,5 years) completed questionnaires on sleep and daytime functioning. RESULTS: Compared to boys, teenage girls reported a significantly greater impact of short sleep duration and sleep difficulties on their school and social activities. Furthermore, our results suggest that the factors predicting the negative interference on daytime functioning seem to be more complex and multifactorial for girls than for boys. CONCLUSIONS: This study further emphasizes the importance of monitoring insufficient and poor sleep quality in adolescents, as these sleep variables seem to have a significant impact on their daytime functioning. Clinicians should also take into account gender when considering sleep issues in adolescents, as teenage girls and boys have different vulnerabilities and needs.

ABSTRACT

The development of a cover for inclined acid-generating areas, such as the external face of dykes and the slope of waste rock piles, is undoubtedly one of the biggest technical reclamation challenges at several mine sites. The LaRonde mine site, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines (Quebec, Canada) is currently engaged to identify an optimal reclamation scenario for the Dyke 1 of its acid-generating tailings storage facilities. One of the promising reclamation options for controlling water infiltration in the acid-generating waste rock on the Dyke 1 is the use of an inclined cover built with available mine waste materials. An instrumented inclined cell with an inclination angle of 18.3 degrees was built on a slope of this dyke to validate if low sulfide tailings and non potentially acid-generating waste rock can be used as cover material to reclaim the Dyke 1. The instrumented inclined cell was monitored for 3 years (2017 to 2019) using volumetric lysimeters, suction sensors, and volumetric water content sensors. The monitoring was done under natural climatic conditions and artificial wetting events. Under natural conditions, less than 1% (5 mm) of incident rainfall percolated in the volumetric lysimeters installed along the slope of the inclined cell. Under controlled conditions associated with artificial wetting events of 6.4 mm/h over a period of 12 h, net percolation values between 1 and 9% (4 to 60 mm) of the sum of incident precipitation were measured. The distance between the top of the cell and the Down Dip Limit (DDL) point was greater than the slope length of the cover under natural conditions and the DDL point moved from the bottom toward the top to reach values between 12 and 20 m from the top of the slope when the wetting events were applied on the cover. These results confirmed the suitability of mining materials as an inclined cover material to control water infiltration in reactive mine waste rocks.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, legislations are being modified around the world to allow patients to receive mental health services through telehealth. Unfortunately, there are no large clinical trial available to reliably document the efficacy of delivering videoconferencing psychotherapy (VCP) for people with panic disorder and agoraphobia (PDA) and whether basic psychotherapeutic processes are altered. METHODS: This 2-arm intent-to-treat non-inferiority study reports on a clinical trial on VCP and documents how therapeutic working alliance and motivation toward psychotherapy are associated to treatment outcome. We hypothesized that VCP would not be inferior to standard face-to-face (FF) cognitive behavior therapy for PDA. No specific hypothesis was stated to address working alliance and treatment mechanisms. VCP was compared to a gold-standard psychotherapy treatment for PDA, which was delivered either in person or in videoconference, with a strict tolerance criterion of about 2 points on the primary outcome measure. Seventy one adult patients were recruited. Measures of working alliance were collected after the first, fifth, and last session. Motivation toward therapy at pre-treatment and working alliance after the fifth therapy session were used as predictors of treatment outcome and compared with change in dysfunctional beliefs toward bodily sensations. RESULTS: Panic disorder, agoraphobia, fear of sensations and depressed mood all showed significant improvements and large effect-sizes from pre to post-treatment. Gains were maintained at follow-up. No significant differences were found between VCP and FF, and effect sizes were trivial for three of the four outcome measures. Non-inferiority tests confirmed that VCP was no less effective than FF therapy on the primary outcome measure and two of the three secondary outcome measures. Working alliance was very strong in VCP and did not statistically differ from FF. Working alliance and motivation did not predict treatment outcome, which was significantly predicted by the reduction in dysfunctional beliefs. The strength of the therapeutic bond was correlated with change in dysfunctional beliefs. CONCLUSION: Mental health professionals can use VCP to provide services to patients with PDA. Building and maintaining a sound working alliance should not be a source concern. Practical recommendations are formulated. ISRCTN TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ISRCTN76456442.

AIM: To assess effects of growth on lower limb maximal isometric muscle strength (MIMS) development in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). METHOD: This observational study used hand-held dynamometry to evaluate MIMS (hip abductors, flexors, extensors; knee flexors and extensors; ankle dorsiflexors) in children with DCD (n=33, 12 females, 21 males, 6-12y, mean [SD] age 9y [2y]). Regression analysis compared changes in MIMS for similar changes in growth (height or body mass) for children with DCD and typically developing children (pre-existing database, n=183), controlling for age and sex. RESULTS: For the same height gain, the gain in muscle strength was 37.3% to 69.2% less in children with DCD compared with typically developing children, with significantly lower slopes (p-value between <0.001-0.042) in all muscle groups tested except knee extensors and ankle dorsiflexors in females. Strength gains related to body mass gains were not different for children with DCD compared to typically developing children. INTERPRETATION: Even when growing at a similar rate, children with DCD do not develop muscle strength gains at the same rate as their typically developing peers. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: Strength gains with growth (height) may be reduced in children with developmental coordination disorder.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Although it has long been known that communication with medical professionals presents a strong relationship with patient satisfaction, research on this topic has been hindered by conceptual and methodological issues (e.g. single-item measures, inclusion of idiosyncratic patient characteristics, etc.). Using a more comprehensive and integrated approach, this study had two objectives: to document the multidimensional structure of the Picker Patient Experience-15, and to test a patient communication/satisfaction model that organizes its dimensions in a conceptually logical array of relationships. First, the factorial structure of the Picker Patient Experience-15 was hypothesized to comprise five dimensions: communication with patient, with family, addressing fears/concerns, preparation for discharge, and patient satisfaction. Second, the hypothesized model included positive relationships between all four communications dimensions, on the one hand, and patient satisfaction, on the other. Within communication dimensions, communication with patient was hypothesized to be the incipient factor for other dimensions, and thus to be positively associated with the other three forms of communication. METHODS: This research is based on a single time point design, which relied on administrative and questionnaire data. The study was conducted at a large University Hospital in Switzerland. The sample included 54,686 patients who received inpatient treatment, excluding those who were cared for in the intensive and intermediate care units. Patients filled out, over a 5-year period, the Picker Patient Experience questionnaire (PPE-15) after discharge (overall response rate of 41%). RESULTS: The proposed five-factor structure of the Picker Patient Experience-15 was successfully supported by the results of a confirmatory factor analysis. Moreover, the hypothesized network of associations between communication and satisfaction latent constructs was substantiated using structural equation modeling. With the exception of the association between preparation for discharge and patient satisfaction, the hypothesized model was fully corroborated. CONCLUSION: A more in-depth understanding of patient satisfaction can be achieved when it is studied as a multifaceted phenomenon.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Best DCD practices include developing the ability of teachers to promote the participation of children in physical activities. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a one-day training session, including short lectures and workshops on developmental coordination disorder (DCD), on the perceptions that physical education teachers (PET) have of the knowledge, skills, and pedagogical practices. Methods: cohort study with a mixed pre-post-follow-up design that included a questionnaire before, immediately after, and three months after the training. Descriptive analyses, Wilcoxon tests, and a thematic analysis were performed. Results: 38, 35, and 22 PET respectively filled out the questionnaires at the three time-point. The perceptions of the knowledge, skills, and pedagogical practices of the PET were higher after the training compared to the initial perceptions (p < 0.006). At first, the PETs reported using certain general pedagogical strategies (e.g., modifying the task). After the training, the PETs gave more concrete examples and reported using new strategies (e.g., offering feedback after the task), which seems to have decreased behavioural problems. Conclusions: training can favourably modify the PETs' perceptions on their knowledge, skills, and practices. More research is necessary to assess the impact of the participation of children with a DCD.

ABSTRACT

Pollen allergies are a major source of seasonal allergic rhinitis in North America. This type of rhinitis affects 17% of adults in Quebec, a marked increase in the last 30 years. Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) pollens are responsible for 50% to 90% of rhinitis cases. Climate change has played a significant role in the increased prevalence of seasonal allergic rhinitis over the last few decades. In 2015, the Quebec government put in place a strategy to tackle this problem, the Stratégie québécoise de réduction de l'herbe à poux et des autres pollens allergènes [Quebec strategy to reduce ragweed and other allergenic pollens]. Based on solid evidence, the Strategy advocates for co-operation between stakeholders and the integration of control measures into the maintenance practices of municipalities and other large public and private landowners. This article presents the scientific data underpinning the Strategy and initial successes of the action taken under the Strategy.


Climate change increases the quantities and allergenic potential of ragweed pollen. Seasonal allergic rhinitis caused by these pollens has increased significantly in North America. Simple environmental control methods can clinically decrease the impact of ragweed pollen. A coordinated policy that incorporates these control measures in municipalities' groundskeeping practices is being implemented in Quebec.


Les changements climatiques augmentent les quantités et le potentiel allergène du pollen de l'herbe à poux (ambroisie). La rhinite allergique saisonnière liée à ces pollens est en augmentation marquée en Amérique du Nord. Des moyens de contrôle environnemental simples peuvent diminuer cliniquement l'impact du pollen de l'herbe à poux. Une politique concertée qui intègre des mesures de contrôle dans les pratiques d'entretien des terrains par les municipalités est en implantation au Québec.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Many adults are dissatisfied with their body, regardless of their weight, and weight loss is commonly perceived as an effective solution to this dissatisfaction. The main purpose of this study was to examine the reasons for wanting to modify one's bodily appearance (shape and weight), and to compare these reasons by sex, age, and weight group. METHODS: The sample consisted of 796 French-speaking Canadian adults (100 men, 696 women; M age = 27.00 years, SD = 7.88, range 18-64; M body mass index = 24.99 kg/m(2), SD = 6.37, range 12.6-66.5 kg/m(2)) who were asked online whether or not they wanted to change their appearance and if so, why. Answers were subjected to a content analysis wherein recurrent themes were grouped and labeled. RESULTS: Most participants (83.2%) wanted to change their appearance. Women, participants with a higher BMI, and older participants were significantly more likely to report this desire. The three most frequently evoked reasons were body dissatisfaction, well-being, and health/shape. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that body dissatisfaction constitutes the primary motive for change for both men and women of all ages, especially for those who are of healthy weight or underweight. Women and younger adults seem to be under the impression that in changing their appearance they will be more comfortable in their own skin. Men, older adults, and overweight adults, on the other hand, are more preoccupied by their health/shape and seldom relate their appearance to their psychological balance.

ABSTRACT

This article compares an expanded descriptive measure of maternal mind-mindedness to the original measure. We included assessments of the valence and richness of descriptions given by 106 mothers when asked to talk about their 18-month-old child (55 boys), in addition to assessing the proportion of mind-related descriptors. Contrary to previous findings, the proportion of mental descriptors was not associated with maternal sensitivity. However, the expanded measure revealed a significant positive link between positive mind-mindedness and maternal sensitivity, and between richness of the description and maternal sensitivity. We then investigated predictors of positive maternal mind-mindedness. Maternal state of mind regarding past attachment experiences, psychological adjustment, and perception of the child's temperament were considered. The findings revealed that attachment state of mind and parenting stress constitute independent predictors of positive mind-mindedness. These findings suggest that mind-mindedness is associated not only with parental state of mind but also to current factors related to parenthood.

ABSTRACT

The present study identifies a broad taxonomy of motives underlying the desire to regulate prejudice and assess the impact of motivation to regulate prejudice on levels of explicit and implicit prejudice. Using self-determination theory as the foundation, six forms of motivation to regulate prejudice are proposed. In Study 1 (N = 257), an exploratory factor analysis reveals evidence for the six proposed dimensions. In Study 2 (N = 198), the six-factor taxonomy of motivation to regulate prejudice is further validated using a confirmatory factor analysis, and construct validity is obtained. In Study 3 (N = 62), motivation to regulate prejudice is manipulated before participants complete the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and explicit measures of prejudice. Results reveal that those with highly self-determined regulation of prejudice demonstrate lower implicit and explicit prejudice than their less self-determined counterparts. Results are discussed in terms of an increased understanding of the motivation to control prejudice.
