ABSTRACT

Biopsies of the endometrium from 93 patients with habitual abortions (HA) were studied immunohistochemically. Chronic endometritis (CE) was diagnosed in 26 patients. Decreased tenascin expression in the endometrial stroma with merozin accumulation in the glandular basal membranes, covering epithelium and vessels were found in HA combined with CE. Abnormal distribution of collagen type I and III with predominance of type I collagen and appearance of merozin. This is indicative of alteration in the endometrium maturation which may result in inadequate ovum implantation and pregnancy interruption. Stromal alterations in HA with or without chronic endometritis are under multifactorial control of various mediators. High level of MMP-9 combined with low level of TFP-beta 1 may serve a prognostic criterion of successful completion of pregnancy regardless of CE. Low level of MMP-9 may increase the risk of pregnancy interruption.

ABSTRACT

The immunohistochemical examination of 46 endometrial biopsies from women with chronic endometritis (CE) suffering from habitual abortions has found disturbance of correlations between various types of immunocompetent cells with domination of T-suppressors, increased accumulation of IgG on the surface of glandular epithelium. In CE, thickening of spiral arteries occurs not because of sclerosis but due to muscular hypertrophy, endometrial stromal-epithelial relations are impaired. Alterations in the distribution of the extracellular matrix components indicate defective endometrium maturation which may lead to inadequate oocyte implantation.

ABSTRACT

The paper deals with different aspects of the relationships occurring between the pregnant woman and the fetus having paternal antigens. Analysis of a great deal of recent information clearly indicates that local uterine immunity plays a great role during pregnancy. The specific features of the gene expression of major histocompatibility by an invasive trophoblast and the immunosuppressive function of placental fibrinoid are discussed. A detailed account of the immunocompetent cells, including T lymphocytes, giant granular lymphocytes, and macrophages, that are involved in immunological responsiveness within the decidua is given.

ABSTRACT

Analysis of microbiologic and histologic findings and measurements of estrogen and gestagen receptors in the endometrium have shown manifest shifts in the endometrial steroid receptor system in women with asymptomatic chronic endometritis. The authors claim that disordered reception of steroid hormones may be regarded as one of the causes of spontaneous, abortions.

ABSTRACT

The paper gives the results of the study into genital Mycoplasma in 1,200 females and 254 newborns and provides strong evidence for the fact that there is a relationship between the Mycoplasma carriage and the inflammatory urogenital processes. It also shows that M. hominis and Ur. urealyticum may persist in the endometrium of females suffering from isthmo-cervical insufficiency. Genital Mycoplasma have been found to play an etiological role in intrauterine infection in premature neonates and in inflammatory processes (endometritis, wound infection following cesarean section) in parturients.

ABSTRACT

An ultrastructural and ultracytochemical analysis of platelets was performed to assess the activity of 5'-AMPase and ATPase using a leukoconcentrate of the peripheral blood cells of non-pregnant women suffering from recurrent spontaneous abortion. The blood platelet populations were found to have increased proportions of light thrombocytes in phases I and II of the menstrual cycle, which was associated with pronounced ultrastructural and cytochemical signs of a release reaction showing their activated state: reduced density of the hyaloplasm, diminished quantity of specific and glycogen granules, development of the vacuolar system, 5'-AMPase and ATPase activity on the plasmalemma, light hyaloplasm, and in released specific granules and vacuoles. The release reaction is associated with a high contact activity of platelets which results in the formation of small and large platelet aggregates and attachment of other blood cells--erythrocytes, lymphocytes, and granulocytes. The intercellular fluid contains membrane fragments of destructive cells, including platelets with 5'-AMPase and ATPase activities, which may result in thromboplastin formation.

ABSTRACT

This research has been carried out with the aim of studying the factors of immunity to viral hepatitis in biologically active fluids of the human reproductive system. As a result, the human reproductive system has been found to contain the complete set of antibodies to the antigenic markers of viral hepatitis. No specific protective mechanisms have been detected in cervical mucus, which permits the penetration of the virus into the upper sections of the female reproductive system with the possibility of ensuing lesions.
