ABSTRACT

The application of Li-S batteries on large scale is held back by the sluggish sulfur kinetics and low synthesis efficiency of sulfur host. In addition, the preparation of catalysts that promote polysulfide redox kinetics is complex and time-consuming, reducing the cost of raw materials in Li-S. Here, a universal synthetic strategy for rapid fabrication of sulfur cathode and metal compounds nanocatalysts is reported based on microwave heating of graphene. Heat-sensitive materials can achieve rapid heating due to graphene reaching 500 ℃ within 4 s via microwave irradiation. The MoP-MoS2/rGO catalyst demonstrated in this work was synthesized within 60 s. When used for catalysts for Li-S batteries whose graphene/sulfur cathodes were also synthesized by microwave heating, enhanced catalytic effect for sulfur redox reaction was verified via experimental and DFT theoretical results. Benefiting from fast redox reaction (MoP), smooth Li+ diffusion pathways (MoS2), and large conductive network (rGO), the assembled Li-S battery with MoP-MoS2/rGO-Add@CS displays a remarkable initial specific capacity, stable lithium anode and good cycle stability (in pouch cells) using this two-pronged strategy. The work provides a practical strategy for advanced Li-S batteries toward a wide range of applications.

ABSTRACT

To address the increasing labor cost of resin tapping, more efficient methods for resin tapping need to be developed. This study aimed to evaluate the features of resinosis as affected by stimulant pastes in Pinus elliottii × P. caribaea, which is also one of the predominant resin-producing species hybrids in South China. The resin yields and resin compositions were assessed in 33 P. elliottii × P. caribaea F1 families, with the application of four kinds of chemical stimulants, potassium (K2SO4) paste, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) paste, benzoic acid (BA) paste and 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) paste. Our results showed that all four pastes significantly increased the resin yield by at least 20% at each tapping, and 3- to fivefold increases were detected at the beginning of each year. The correlations between resin yield and growth at each tapping ranged from uncorrelated to moderately positively correlated, indicating that resin yield was mostly but not always determined by tree size. The concentration of each resin component did not change with the stimulant applications. In P. elliottii × P. caribaea, selecting a larger tree diameter at breast height and employing the chemical stimulants at the first several tapping rounds are efficient tapping procedures. Moreover, the K2SO4-based stimulant can be recommended considering its promoting effects on resin yield and the low cost of the chemicals required to produce it.

ABSTRACT

Neuroinflammation is a common factor in neurodegenerative diseases, and it has been demonstrated that galectin-3 activates microglia and astrocytes, leading to inflammation. This means that inhibition of galectin-3 may become a new strategy for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Based on this motivation, the objective of this study is to explore an integrated new approach for finding lead compounds that inhibit galectin-3, by combining universal artificial intelligence algorithms with traditional drug screening methods. Based on molecular docking method, potential compounds with high binding affinity were screened out from Chinese medicine database. Manifold artificial intelligence algorithms were performed to validate the docking results and further screen compounds. Among all involved predictive methods, the deep learning-based algorithm made 500 modeling attempts, and the square correlation coefficient of the best trained model on the test sets was 0.9. The XGBoost model reached a square correlation coefficient of 0.97 and a mean square error of only 0.01. We switched to the ZINC database and performed the same experiment, the results showed that the compounds in the former database showed stronger affinity. Finally, we further verified through molecular dynamics simulation that the complex composed of the candidate ligand and the target protein showed stable binding within 100 ns of simulation time. In summary, combined with the application based on artificial intelligence algorithms, we unearthed the active ingredients 1,2-Dimethylbenzene and Typhic acid contained in Crataegus pinnatifida and Typha angustata might be the effective inhibitors of neurodegenerative diseases. The high prediction accuracy of the models shows that it has practical application value on small sample data sets such as drug screening.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a new self-healing shape memory polymer (SMP) coating was prepared to protect the aluminum alloy 2024-T3 from corrosion by the incorporation of dual-function microspheres containing polycaprolactone and the corrosion inhibitor 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ). The self-healing properties of the coatings were investigated via scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electrochemical microscopy following the application of different healing conditions. The results demonstrated that the coating possessed a triple-action self-healing ability enabled by the cooperation of the 8HQ inhibitor, the SMP coating matrix, and the melted microspheres. The coating released 8HQ in a pH-dependent fashion and immediately suppressed corrosion within the coating scratch. After heat treatment, the scratched coating exhibited excellent recovery of its anticorrosion performance, which was attributed to the simultaneous initiation of scratch closure by the shape memory effect of the coating matrix, sealing of the scratch by the melted microspheres, and the synergistic effect of corrosion inhibition by 8HQ.
