ABSTRACT

Meat safety and quality are the main concerns of consumers in the present food market. Chitosan-gelatin edible coatings containing nano-encapsulated clove ethanol extracts (CNPs), designated as CHI-GEL-CNPs, on the quality preservation of chilled pork were studied. Results showed that the mean particle diameters of CNPs were 346.15 ± 37.30 nm. Nano-modification improved the antibacterial activity of free clove ethanol extract. The increasing rate order of TVB-N and TBARS was CHI-GEL-CNPs < CHI-GEL-Clove < CHI-GEL < CHI < CON group. The CHI-GEL-CNPs coating inhibited the elevation of pH and total viable count (TVC) of chilled pork. The TVB-N and TVC values demonstrated that the CHI-GEL-CNPs coating effectively extended the shelf life of chilled pork up to 13 days. In addition, the sensory properties of CHI-GEL-CNPs chilled pork loins were superior to that of control samples. Therefore, the developed CHI-GEL-CNPs coatings have great promise as a nanocomposite for meat preservation.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Panum's limiting case is one of the typical configurations of monocular occlusion region. The matching rule of Panum's limiting case is the key to understanding how monocular occlusion region produces stereopsis. There are currently two main views on the matching rule of Panum's limiting case, namely double fusion and uniqueness constraint. This paper further discusses its matching mechanism on the basis of previous studies. Methods: In this study, fold line Panum's stimuli were used to study the matching rule of Panum's limiting case. In Experiment 1, fixation position was adopted to present the stimulus in a short time to explore the matching rules in Panum's limiting case. In Experiment 2, the effect of fixation position on Panum's limiting case matching results was further investigated. Results: The results of Experiment 1 show that when stimuli are presented in a short period of time, the reported result that a single feature in one eye may be matched alternately with two features in the other eye. This matching rule is called "fast alternative matching" in this article. The results of Experiment 2 results show that the position of the fixation could affect the matching result of participants. Conclusion: In conclusion, the matching rule of Panum's limiting case is fast alternative matching, and the matching result is related to the attention state of the participant. These results not only provide a new perspective for matching rules in Panum's limiting case, but also show that depth perception results in stereopsis can be influenced by top-down cognitive processing. This study provides a theoretical basis for studying the formation of stereopsis in the monocular region to a certain extent. In summary, the matching rule of Panum's limiting case is fast alternative matching. In previous studies, the perceived result of double fusion may be caused by fast alternative matching. Also, the matching results are related to the participant's state of attention, which suggests that the depth perception results of stereopsis are influenced by top-down cognitive processing.

ABSTRACT

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, several case studies demonstrated that many asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 underwent fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) examination for various indications. However, there is a lack of literature to characterize the pattern of [18F]FDG PET/CT imaging on asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Therefore, a systematic review to analyze the pulmonary findings of [18F]FDG PET/CT on asymptomatic COVID-19 patients was conducted. This systematic review was performed under the guidelines of PRISMA. PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science were used to search for articles for this review. Articles with the key words: "asymptomatic", "COVID-19", "[18F]FDG PET/CT", and "nuclear medicine" were searched for from 1 January 2020 to 20 May 2021. Thirty asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 were included in the eighteen articles. These patients had a mean age of 62.25 ± 14.85 years (male: 67.71 ± 12.00; female: 56.79 ± 15.81). [18F]FDG-avid lung lesions were found in 93.33% (28/30) of total patients. The major lesion was [18F]FDG-avid multiple ground-glass opacities (GGOs) in the peripheral or subpleural region in bilateral lungs, followed by the consolidation. The intensity of [18F]FDG uptake in multiple GGOs was 5.605 ± 2.914 (range from 2 to 12) for maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax). [18F]FDG-avid thoracic lymph nodes (LN) were observed in 40% (12/40) of the patients. They mostly appeared in both mediastinal and hilar regions with an SUVmax of 5.8 ± 2.93 (range from 2.5 to 9.6). The [18F]FDG uptake was observed in multiple GGOs, as well as in the mediastinal and hilar LNs. These are common patterns in PET/CT of asymptomatic patients with COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

S-nitrosylation (SNO) is a covalent post-translational oxidative modification. The reaction is the nitroso group (-NO) to a reactive cysteine thiol within a protein to form the SNO. In recent years, a variety of proteins in human body have been found to undergo thiol nitrosylation under specific conditions. Protein SNO, which is closely related to cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease and tumors, plays an important role in regulatory mechanism of protein function in both physiological and pathological pathways, such as in cellular homeostasis and metabolism. This review discusses possible molecular mechanisms protein SNO modification, such as the role of NO in vivo and the formation mechanism of SNO, with particular emphasis on mechanisms utilized by SNO to cause certain diseases of human. Importantly, the effect of SNO on diseases is multifaceted and multi-channel, and its critical value in vivo is not well defined. Intracellular redox environment is also a key factor affecting its level. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the equilibrium relationship between SNO and denitrosylation pathway in the future researches. These findings provide theoretical support for the improvement or treatment of diseases from the point of view of SNO.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we study a heat transfer model, with the surface of the microbolometer device receiving radiation from blackbody constructed using a COMSOL Multiphysics simulator. We have proposed three kinds of L-type 2-leg and 4-leg with the pixel pitch of 35 µm based on vanadium oxide absorbent membrane sandwiched with top passivated and bottom Si3N4 supporting films, respectively. Under the blackbody radiation, the surface temperature changes and distributions of these samples are simulated and analyzed in detail. The trend of change of the temperature dependent resistance of the four kinds of bolometer devices using the proposed heat transfer model is consistent with the actual results of the change of resistance of 4 samples irradiated with 325 K blackbody located in the front distance of 5 cm. In this paper, ΔT indicates the averaged differences of the top temperature on the suspended membrane and the lowest temperature on the post of legs of the microbolometers. It is shown that ΔT ≈ 17 mK is larger in nominal 2-leg microbolometer device than that of 4-leg one and of 2-leg with 2 µm × 2 µm central square hole and two 7.5 µm × 2 µm slits in suspended films. Additionally, only ΔT ≈ 5 mK with 4-leg microbolometer device under the same radiated energy of 325 K blackbody results from the larger total thermal conductance.

Based on geochemical and magnetic approaches, the distribution, sources, and health risk of trace metals in surface sediments from a seashore tourist city were investigated. A significant correlation was found between magnetic susceptibility (χ) and trace metals, which suggested that levels of trace metals in the sediments can be effectively depicted by the magnetic approach. The spatial distribution of χ and trace metals matched well with the city layout with relatively higher values being found in the port and busy tourist areas. This result, together with enrichment factors (EFs) and Tomlinson pollution load index (PLI) of metals, suggested that the influence of human activities on the coastal environment was noticeable. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that trace metals in the sediments were derived from both anthropogenic and natural sources. Noncarcinogenic risk assessment showed that there was no potential health risk of exposure to metals by means of ingestion or inhalation.
