ABSTRACT

A bismuth-doped-pure-silica holey fiber is fabricated using a fiber preform made by the furnace chemical vapor deposition method. The spectroscopic properties of the fiber are studied, and laser action at λ=1450 nm with an efficiency of 12% is demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

An all-silica photonic bandgap fiber with a cladding index difference of approximately 2 % and diameter-to-pitch ratio (d/wedge) of 0.12 was fabricated and studied. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the properties of photonic bandgap fiber with such a small d/wedge. The fiber is single-mode in the fundamental bandgap. The mode field diameter in the 1000-1200 nm wavelength range is 19-20 microm. The minimum loss in the same range is 20 dB/km for a 30-cm bending diameter. In our opinion, all-silica photonic bandgap fiber can serve as a potential candidate for achieving single-mode propagation with a large mode area.

ABSTRACT

An apparatus for automatic lung straightening may be used in medical technologies employed in thoracic (lung) surgery in the postoperative rehabilitation of a patient. This apparatus may automatically (without a physician's or a nurse observance) maintain tension relief in the pleural cavity in the patient on an individual basis, which is required for complete lung strengthening. Its use greatly reduces the number of postoperative complications in the lung, such as residual cavities, edema, and empyema of the pleura. This apparatus is to go into quantity production as a cheap, expendable device to prevent AIDS and hepatitis.

ABSTRACT

A spectrophotometric multiwavelength method for the simultaneous determination of the main hemoglobin derivatives including oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, carboxyhemoglobin, and methemoglobin has been developed. The choice of analytical wavelengths was made by the methods of information factors and linear programming. The software for the quantitative analysis was developed considering the least square method, linear programming, algebraic background correction, and combined methods including linear programming and algebraic background correction.

ABSTRACT

The first experience gained in the use of xenospleen perfusate in the management of 13 patients with disseminated fibrous-cavernous tuberculosis is presented. The disease was accompanied by an evident intoxication and respiratory insufficiency. Traditional ways of treatment failed to be effective in all the patients, thus indicating an intravenous drop by drop administration of xenogeneic spleen perfusate in the dose of 10 ml per kg body weight. The antiinflammatory (immunomodulation) effect manifested itself in the body temperature drop, less intoxication and infiltration processes in the lungs, as well as a better hemogram.
