ABSTRACT

A compact tilt accelerometer with high sensitivity at low frequency was designed to provide low frequency corrections for the feedback signal of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory active seismic attenuation system. It has been developed using a Tungsten Carbide ceramic knife-edge hinge designed to avoid the mechanical 1/f noise believed to be intrinsic in polycrystalline metallic flexures. Design and construction details are presented; prototype data acquisition and control limitations are discussed. The instrument's characterization reported here shows that the hinge is compatible with being metal-hysteresis-free, and therefore also free of the 1/f noise generated by the dislocation Self-Organized Criticality in the metal. A tiltmeter of this kind will be effective to separate the ground tilt component from the signal of horizontal low frequency seismometers, and to correct the ill effects of microseismic tilt in advanced seismic attenuation systems.

ABSTRACT

We present a mechanical rotation sensor consisting of a balance pivoting on a tungsten carbide knife edge. These sensors are important for precision seismic isolation systems, as employed in land-based gravitational wave interferometers and for the new field of rotational seismology. The position sensor used is an air-core linear variable differential transformer with a demonstrated noise floor of 1 × 10⁻¹¹ m/√Hz. We describe the instrument construction and demonstrate low noise operation with a noise floor upper bound of 5.7 × 10⁻9 rad/√Hz at 10 mHz and 6.4 × 10⁻¹° rad/√Hz at 0.1 Hz. The performance of the knife edge hinge is compatible with a behaviorur free of noise from dislocation self-organized criticality.

ABSTRACT

Clinical data are available on 109 patients with different forms of polypous rhinosinusitis who have undergone ultrasonic cavitation (USC) of medicinal solutions (antiseptics, antibiotics) in the course of maxillary sinusotomy. USC cleared the sinus from necrotic tissues, depressed the growth of the polyps and pathogenic microflora. Long-term results of the combined treatment were studied in 78 patients. The disease recurred in 2 (2.5%) patients.

ABSTRACT

The results are presented of measurements high-energy particles in a customary manned space station orbit (a 350-450-km altitude, a 51.6 degrees inclination; Salyut-6 and 7, MIR). The particles were recorded by the chambers composed of the Lavsan (polyethyleneterephtalate) solid-state nuclear track detector layers mounted outside a spacecraft for 1-3 years. A high resolution has been attained in the charge and energy spectra of 30-200 MeV/n Fe group particles. The results of measuring the particle fluxes in the space station orbits are used to restore the initial particle energy spectra in terms of the models that describe the galactic and solar cosmic rays and their penetration to the Earth's magnetosphere. The analysis demonstrates a high effectiveness of the described methods when applied to quite a number of space physics problems.

ABSTRACT

2400-year solar cycle ascertained by us in the long-term series of various natural characteristics (e.g. the radiocarbon content in samples of well-known ages, oscillations of the sea and ocean levels etc.) includes three parts roughly equal in duration: a phase of high activity, a phase of depression and a phase of moderate activity. In climate oscillations, which are connected with this cycle, the next phenomena are established: a little climatic optimum, a little Ice Age, and a temperate climate epoch.

ABSTRACT

Problematic questions of physical training and physical fitness of military physicians are described in this article. The results of studies and estimation of the existing system of physical training of military physicians are depicted. Optimal fitness norms are recommended for MOS "Military physician".

ABSTRACT

"A number of investigators have noted a movement of Soviet population toward the seacoasts, contrasting with the nation's traditional inland development. The pull of the coast has been linked to the increasing foreign trade of the USSR and to greater involvement in ocean affairs in general. The author analyzes the recent growth of maritime urban places in terms of the nation's major maritime regions: Azov-Black Sea, Baltic, Caspian, Pacific and Arctic, compares the rates of urban population growth and discusses some of the factors that account for differences in regional development."

ABSTRACT

The synthesis and degradation of rat brain synaptosomal proteins were studied in three groups of animals: trained the behaviour pattern in the maze, "pseudo-trained" and control. These processes were assessed from protein specific radioactivity after 1, 3 days and after 1, 3, 6 and 9 weeks following intraventricular injection of 14C-lysine. The experiments showed three fractions differing in overall values of half-life (T50). An increase in specific radioactivity of brain proteins of trained animals was revealed as compared to that in "pseudo-trained" and control rats. T50 was recorded to rise for slow-metabolizing fractions of synaptosomal proteins of trained rats. Participation of synaptosomal proteins in the mechanisms of long-term memory is discussed.

ABSTRACT

A method of obtaining antineuronal and antiglial immune sera is described. Data of the quantitative immunochemical analysis of the antigens of the neuronal and glial fractions of the rat brain are presented. The neurons proved to contain 4, and the glia--3 brain-specific proteins; one or two of them are common for these cell fractions.

ABSTRACT

Experiments were conducted on mice. Direct Jerne's test demonstrated a possibility of intensification of the primary immune response in the sexually mature mice under the effect of the splenic extracts. The significance of the extract dose and of the time of administration for the manifestation of the stimulating action was studied.
