ABSTRACT

A female patient with an intramedullary cyst presented with a paraplegia. At operation an intramedullary cyst at the fourth dorsal level was found. The microscopic features of the cyst wall were suggestive of ependymal origin.

ABSTRACT

A case of an 11-months-old girl with traumatic occlusion of supraclinoid portion of internal carotid artery is reported. The patient died about 22 hours after the craniocerebral trauma.

ABSTRACT

Four cases of hydatid cysts of the brain are reported. All of the patients were under 18 years of age. One presented with a localized erosion of the skull and a characteristic cracked-pot sign. Angiographic findings were most useful in their diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

The diagnostic value of CSF lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate transaminase in cases of brain tumours (except for CSF AST in the benign tumours), congenital hydrocephalus, and brain abscess is established. Tumour cyst fluids show a higher enzymatic activity than does the CSF. The two enzyme estimations do not help in differentiating the supratentorial from the infratentorial tumours. CSF AST is superior to CSF LD in discriminating the malignant and benign tumours, in so far as the AST is increases selectively in malignancy. Estimates of CSF LD are slightly superior to those of CSF AST, both in incidence of abnormality and the degree of their rise.

ABSTRACT

Extroversion of the cerebral hemispheres and a posterior intestinal fistula are described in a male foetus with single umbilical artery and craniorhachischisis. The paper has distinction of describing for the first time the cerebral extroversion in a full term human foetus. At this stage of development, the everted cerebral hemispheres, after having proliferated exuberantly to a considerable size present a disorganised appearance which would vary in every case of this type. However, the lateral ventricles are still visible, structures comparable to thalami and choroid plexus can be made out and the vascular masses with large blood clots seen in anencephaly are minimal. That the posterior intestinal fistula represents persistence of an accessory neurenteric canal is discussed. The neural and neurenteric defects in the specimen described here are possibly due to abnormal arterial pattern in the caudal half of the body, imposed by single umbilical artery.

ABSTRACT

Multiple anomalies, including a vertebral cleft in the cervicothoracic region containing the posterior pharyngeal diverticulum, and duplication of the lower lumbar spine with absence of sacrum and coccyx, are described in a stillborn anencephalic female monster. It is postulated that vertebral division at two levels is evidence of two neurenteric canals, a caudal normal canal and a cranial accessory one. This supports the 'accessory neurenteric canal' theory for vertebral divisions in the cervicothoracic regions. Other associated defects, such as exomphalos, ectopia vesicae and craniorhachischisis, are correlated with the presence of a single umbilical artery.

ABSTRACT

Two internal herinias of the intestines were found in adult males. One was a large translucent avascular membranous sac contining the small intestine from the duodenojejunal flexure to a point 6 in. proximal to the ileocaecal junction. The other was a peritoneal sac enclosing the small intestine, appendix, caecum and 6 in. of the ascending colon. The mesenteric and colic vessels were normal. Both hernias conformed to PAPEZ's concept of the so-called paraduodenal hernia that the hernial sac is derived from the umbilical coelom. The authors suggest that most of the so-called paraduodenal hernias are derived from the embryonic umbilical peritoneal diverticulum rather than from the peritoneal recesses or mesentery of the colon.
