PIP: A comparison of demographic differences between the Italian North and South is presented. Particular attention is paid to differences in the situation in 1970-1972 and in 1980-1982. The focus of the present study is on an analysis of the situation in 1970-1972; a second article will consider the situation in 1980-1982 when data from the 1981 census are available. Projections based on 1970-1972 data suggest that regional variations will increase in the absence of significant changes in migration patterns.^ieng
