ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of diabetes, duration of diabetes, and blood glucose on speech-, low/mid-, and high-frequency hearing loss. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 2821 participants aged 20-87 years in the China National Health Survey were included. Diabetes was defined as valid fasting blood glucose (FBG) of ≥ 7.0 mmol/L, a self-reported history of diabetes or the use of anti-diabetic medications. Speech-(500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz), low/mid- (500, 1000 and 2000 Hz), and high-frequency (4000, 6000, and 8000 Hz) hearing loss was defined as pure tone average of responding frequencies > 20 dB HL in the better ear, respectively. RESULTS: In fully adjusted models, for speech-, low/mid-, and high-frequency hearing loss, compared with no diabetes, those with diabetes (OR[95%CI]: 1.44 [1.12, 1.86], 1.23 [0.94, 1.61], and 1.75 [1.28, 2.41], respectively) and with diabetes for > 5 years duration (OR[95%CI]: 1.63 [1.09, 2.42], and 1.63 [1.12, 2.36], 2.15 [1.25, 3.70], respectively) were at higher risk. High FBG level was associated with a higher risk of speech-, low/ mid-, and high-frequency hearing loss. And there were stronger associations between HL and diabetes, longer duration and higher in "healthier population" (no hypertension, no dyslipidemia and younger age). CONCLUSION: Diabetes, longer duration, and higher FBG level were independently associated with hearing loss for speech-, low/mid- and high-frequency hearing loss, particularly in higher frequency and "healthier population". Paying more attention to hearing loss in those populations could lower the burden of hearing loss.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Using propensity score matching method(PSM) to investigate the clinical effect of surgical plus radio(chemo)therapy and non-surgery chemoradiotherapy treatment strategies for advanced tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 324 patients diagnosed with advanced tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma and treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 2000 to 2018, confirmed by pathology and without distant metastasis. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier estimates, the Cox proportional hazards model, and propensity score matching(PSM). Results: Of the 324 patients, 102 were treated with non-surgery chemoradiotherapy treatment strategies and 222 with surgical plus radio(chemo)therapy treatment. Cox multivariate analysis showed that the non-surgery treatment group had a favorable prognosis than the surgical treatment group, however, these outcomes were not significantly different [overall survival(OS): adjusted Hazard Ratios(aHR): 0.92, 95% confidence interval(CI): 0.60-1.42; disease-specific survival(DSS): aHR: 0.71, 95%CI: 0.43-1.20; disease-free survival(DFS): aHR: 0.82, 95%CI: 0.53-1.28]. The new patient cohort consisted of 102 subpairs after PSM. There were no significant differences between two groups(OS: aHR: 0.85, 95%CI: 0.51-1.40; DSS: aHR: 0.62, 95%CI: 0.35-1.11; DFS: aHR: 0.80, 95%CI: 0.49-1.33). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that patients with non-surgical treatment do not have significantly better survival outcomes compared to surgical treatment group, while non-surgical treatment has advantages in improving the quality of life of patients, so comprehensive treatment based on radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be recommended for advanced tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics of congenital pyriform fistula with acute suppurative thyroiditis as the initial presentation. Method: A total of 71 patients with congenital pyriform sinus fistula were treated, of which 33 cases had acute suppurative thyroiditis as the first symptom. For the patients with congenital pyriform sinus fistula who have acute suppurative thyroiditis as the first symptom, infection should be controlled first. Full drainage should be done when necessary, and the lesion should be completely excised during the stable period. Result: All the patients were followed up for 6 months to 216 months. No recurrence was found during follow-up. Conclusion: For patients with acute suppurative thyroiditis, the possibility of congenital pyriform sinus fistula should be considered. If the diagnosis of congenital pyriform sinus fistula is clear, the lesion should be completely resected by surgery. .

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the detection trend of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN) of lower genital tract from 2013 to 2015. Methods: A retrospective analysis was undertaken of colposcopy-directed biopsy of cervical, vaginal and vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia lesions include cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), VaIN and vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) in Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University from January 2013 to December 2015. Results: (1) Overall data of CIN, VaIN and VIN: a total of 16 732 cases were diagnosed of lower genital intraepithelial neoplasia in 3 years, accounting for 23.20% (16 732/72 128) of total colposcopy-directed biopsy cases. Among them, CIN, VaIN and VIN accounted for 19.48% (14 053/72 128), 2.67% (1 923/72 128), 1.05% (756/72 128) of total colposcopy-directed biopsy cases of the lower genital tract, 83.99% (14 053/16 732), 11.49% (1 923/16 732), 4.52% (756/16 732) of total lower genital intraepithelial neoplasia, respectively. (2) Annual data of CIN, VaIN and VIN from 2013 to 2015. The annual proportion of CIN in all intraepithelial neoplasia of lower gential tract was basically stable, consisting of 86.02%(3 955/4 598),83.25%(4 795/5 760) and 83.20% (5 303/6 374), respectively. The annual proportion of VaIN was gradually increasing, consisting of 8.09%(372/4 598), 12.45%(717/5 760) and 13.08%(834/6 374), respectively. The annual proportion of VIN was gradually decreasing, consisting of 5.89%(271/4 598), 4.31%(248/5 760) and 3.72%(237/6 374), respectively. Conclusion: The increasing detection of VaIN from 2013 to 2015 might correlate with the increasing attention to inspection of the entire vaginal wall.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to explore the effect of X-ray irradiation on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of colorectal cancer SW480 cells. Human colorectal cancer SW480 cells used in this study were irradiated by X-rays in 0 Gy, 4 Gy and 8 Gy doses, respectively. Transwell method was adopted to detect the changes of invasion and migration ability of SW480 cells cultured for 24 h after being irradiated by X-rays in 0 Gy, 4 Gy and 8 Gy doses. After X-ray irradiation, invasion ability of cells in 4 Gy dose group and 8 Gy dose group strengthened significantly compared with that of the 0 Gy dose group (p < 0.05); invasion ability of cells in 8 Gy dose group also strengthened significantly compared to the 4 Gy dose group (p < 0.05). After X-ray irradiation, migration ability of cells also changed: migration ability of cells in 4 Gy dose group and 8 Gy dose group strengthened significantly compared with that of the 0 Gy group (p less than 0.05). Results of QRT-RCR and Western blot detection showed that after X-ray irradiation, the expression of epithelial index E-cadherin in 4 Gy dose group and 8 Gy dose group decreased significantly compared with that of the 0 Gy dose group (p < 0.05); moreover, the higher the dose was, the more significantly the expression decreased. Therefore, X-ray irradiation-induced EMT is in positive correlation with the irradiation dose to some extent. Besides, X-ray irradiation can enhance the invasion and migration ability of human colorectal cancer cells.

ABSTRACT

The genetic diversity and relationship of 42 tomato varieties sourced from different geographic regions was examined with EST-SSR markers. The genetic diversity was between 0.18 and 0.77, with a mean of 0.49; the polymorphic information content ranged from 0.17 to 0.74, with a mean of 0.45. This indicates a fairly high degree of diversity among these tomato varieties. Based on the cluster analysis using unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic average (UPGMA), all the tomato varieties fell into 5 groups, with no obvious geographical distribution characteristics despite their diverse sources. The principal component analysis (PCA) supported the clustering result; however, relationships among varieties were more complex in the PCA scatterplot than in the UPGMA dendrogram. This information about the genetic relationships between these tomato lines helps distinguish these 42 varieties and will be useful for tomato variety breeding and selection. We confirm that the EST-SSR marker system is useful for studying genetic diversity among tomato varieties. The high degree of polymorphism and the large number of bands obtained per assay shows that SSR is the most informative marker system for tomato genotyping for purposes of rights/protection and for the tomato industry in general. It is recommended that these varieties be subjected to identification using an SSR-based manual cultivar identification diagram strategy or other easy-to-use and referable methods so as to provide a complete set of information concerning genetic relationships and a readily usable means of identifying these varieties.

ABSTRACT

Hippocampal functions vary across the estrous cycle but metabolic changes at the protein level have not been systematically studied so far. It was therefore the aim of the study to screen expression of metabolic proteins mainly represented by metabolic enzymes in the hippocampus over the estrous cycle and in males. Female and male OFA Sprague-Dawley rats were used and female estrous phases were determined by vaginal smears, according to which females were separated into groups of proestrous, estrous, early and late metestrous and diestrous. Proteins were extracted from hippocampal tissue and separated on two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by identification with mass spectrometry methods (MALDI-TOF-TOF and nano-LC-ESI-MS/MS). Comparative analysis of protein levels was carried out by quantifying protein spot volumes by means of specific software. Levels of one expression form of gamma-enolase were different between diestrous and early metestrous; C-1-tetrahydrofolate synthase levels were elevated in proestrous as compared with estrous and serotransferrin levels were increased in diestrous as compared with proestrous, estrous, metestrous and in males. The outcome of estrous cycle- and gender-dependent protein fluctuations is relevant for the interpretation of previous and future work as well as for the design of further studies at the protein level in the hippocampus.

ABSTRACT

Extracorporeal circulation and myocardial protection in 53 children with ventricular septal defect associated with severe pulmonary hypertension were reported. The average aortic cross-clamping time was 45.5 minutes. The hearts were defibrillated spontaneously in 35 patients. We emphasized that full understanding of the pathophysiological characteristics of ventricular septal defect associated with severe pulmonary hypertension in children is fairly important to the use of various extracorporeal circulation techniques during surgical intervention.
