ABSTRACT

Nanocomposites based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and magnetite nanoparticles (MNP-Fe3O4) show promise for applications in biomedical treatments. One key challenge is to improve the stabilization and dispersion of MNP-Fe3O4. To address this, we synthesized MNP-Fe3O4/PLA nanocomposites using ultrasound mediation and a single iron(II) precursor, eliminating the need for surfactants or organic solvents, and conducted the process under ambient conditions. The resulting materials, containing 18 and 33 wt.% Fe3O4, exhibited unique thermal behavior characterized by two mass losses: one at a lower degradation temperature (Td) and another at a higher Td compared to pure PLA. This suggests that the interaction between PLA and MNP-Fe3O4 occurs through hydrogen bonds, enhancing the thermal stability of a portion of the polymer. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analysis supported this finding, revealing shifts in bands related to the terminal -OH groups of the polymer and the Fe-O bonds, thereby confirming the interaction between the groups. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the PLA serves as a protective layer against the oxidation of MNP-Fe3O4 in the 18% MNP-Fe3O4/PLA nanocomposite when exposed to a high-power laser (90 mW). Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed that the synthetic procedure yields materials with dispersed nanoparticles within the PLA matrix without the need for additional reactants.

ABSTRACT

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare, locally aggressive or borderline vascular tumor that typically affects infants. It presents as a purpuric cutaneous lesion and may be associated with life-threatening coagulation disorders, such as the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. The differential diagnosis can be challenging based on clinical presentation alone. Imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnostic workup, particularly magnetic resonance imaging. We present a case report of a 4-month-old patient with an enlarging vinous cutaneous mass on the thigh and coagulation abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large, infiltrative, soft-tissue lesion with poorly defined margins and heterogeneous enhancement, that involved all muscle compartments of the thigh and was associated with lymphedema, stranding of the subcutaneous fat and cutaneous thickening. These findings were consistent with kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the thigh and the diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological characterization.

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors have a wide spectrum of biological behaviour and are composed of inflammatory cells and myofibroblastic spindle cells. Tumors may infrequently involve the liver. Imaging findings are non-specific. Teaching Point: Radiologists should be familiar with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors as a diagnostic consideration to avoid unnecessary surgery.

ABSTRACT

Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in childhood. Genomic amplification of MYCN is associated with poor outcomes and is detected in 16% of all NB cases. CT scans and MRI are the imaging techniques recommended for diagnosis and disease staging. The assessment of imaging features such as tumor volume, shape, and local extension represent relevant prognostic information. Radiogenomics have shown powerful results in the assessment of the genotype based on imaging findings automatically extracted from medical images. In this work, random forest was used to classify the MYCN amplification using radiomic features extracted from CT slices in a population of 46 NB patients. The learning model showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.85 ± 0.13, suggesting that radiomic-based methodologies might be helpful in the extraction of information that is not accessible by human naked eyes but could aid the clinicians on the diagnosis and treatment plan definition. Clinical relevance - This approach represents a random forest-based model to predict the MYCN amplification in NB patients that could give a faster, earlier, and repeatable analysis of the tumor along the time.

ABSTRACT

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is an important polymer that is based on renewable biomass resources. Because of environmental issues, more renewable sources for polymers synthesis have been sought for industrial purposes. In this sense, cheaper monomers should be used to facilitate better utilization of less valuable chemicals and therefore granting more sustainable processes. Some points are raised about the need to study the total degradability of any PLA, which may require specific composting conditions (e.g., temperature, type of microorganism, adequate humidity and aerobic environment). Polymerization processes to produce PLA are presented with an emphasis on D,L-lactic acid (or rac-lactide) as the reactant monomer. The syntheses involving homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes to produce poly(D,L-Lactic acid) (PDLLA) are also addressed. Additionally, the production of blends, copolymers, and composites with PDLLA are also presented exemplifying different preparation methods. Some general applications of these materials mostly dedicated to the biomedical area over the last 10-15 years will be pointed out.

ABSTRACT

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome is a rare complex congenital disorder, with combined Müllerian and mesonephric duct anomalies, presenting with uterus didelphys, unilateral blind hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis. Hemivaginal obstruction usually leads to impairment of normal menstrual flow, resulting in symptoms after menarche, namely dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain or infertility. Age of presentation depends on the anatomical features of this anomaly. We report a case of a 21-year-old female presenting with few symptoms and incidental findings on transvaginal ultrasound, with typical findings of this disorder on magnetic resonance imaging, which remains the gold standard imaging technique for thorough assessment of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, allowing for a correct diagnosis and adequate surgical management. Our case also highlights some unusual features, such as the presence of a blind ectopic ureter, with hematic content, and an incomplete septum within the obstructed hemivagina.

ABSTRACT

Organizing pneumonia is a pulmonary disease of undefined etiology, with few reported cases in children. It may be secondary to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, infectious agents, or hematopoietic cell transplantation. We present a case of an 18-year-old boy who presented to a follow-up consult with respiratory symptoms at the age of 11 years, 8 years after finishing treatment for a prostatic relapse of a pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma. Chest radiography revealed nodular opacities in the left lung, the one in the left lower lobe with silhouette sign with the left hemidiaphragm. Chest computerized tomography showed 2 nodular lesions in the left upper lobe, one of them cavitated, and another nodular lesion in the left lower lobe; 2 of these nodules had surrounding ground-glass opacities. Microbiological work-up, including tuberculosis screening, was negative. Biopsy revealed findings suggestive of organizing pneumonia. He presented spontaneous resolution. This case presented a diagnostic challenge due to rarity of this condition and its indetermined association with the patient's history of rhabdomyosarcoma. With this case, the authors alert that organizing pneumonia must be considered in patients presenting with pulmonary lesions with a history of previous hematopoietic stem cell transplants, lung irradiation, or immunosuppression. Pulmonary metastases and secondary tumors must be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with a heavily treated relapsed rhabdomyosarcoma.

In this work, we investigated the role of solid-state dealumination by (NH4)2SiF6 (25% Al removal and 13% Si insertion), the impregnation of niobium (10, 18, and 25 wt. %) on dealuminated *BEA (DB) zeolite and their catalytic properties in ethanol and xylose transformations. Among all the studied catalysts, 18%Nb-DB showed increased mesoporosity and external areas. A leveling effect in the number and strength of the proposed two sites (Brønsted and Lewis) present in the catalyst (n1 = 0.24 mmol g-1, -ΔH1 = 49 kJ mol-1, and n2 = 0.20 mmol g-1, -ΔH2 = 42 kJ mol-1) in the catalyst 18%Nb-DB, might be responsible for its good activity. This catalyst presented the highest selectivity for diethyl ether, DEE (97%) with 61% conversion after 50 ethanol pulses at 230 °C (turnover number, TON DEE = 1.15). These features allowed catalytically fruitful bonding of the ethanol molecules to the neighboring sites on the channels, facilitating bimolecular ether formation through a possible SN2 mechanism. The same catalyst was active and selective for transformation of xylose at 180 °C, showing 64% conversion and 51% selectivity for furfural (TON Furfural = 24.7) using water as a green solvent.

Nanostructured materials have been used in several branches of science and technology. Particulate matter is one of the major air pollution concerns. In this work, nanorods and nanoparticles of Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 (CZ) mixed oxides were prepared by different routes, and the use of an organic template was evaluated in diesel soot oxidation. The catalysts were characterized by several techniques including structural analysis (XRD, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption) and activity (TPR/MS, TPO/MS). A fast TPR/MS method is proposed to calculate hydrogen consumption that can be correlated to the oxygen storage capacity (OSC). It was demonstrated that CZ-nanorods with twice the amount of template in the syntheses (CZ-NRs-2X) were very active for soot oxidation with T 50% at 351 °C, and CO2 and H2O were the only oxidation products from Printex®-U (Evonik). This catalyst, reported for the first time, was subjected to up to three cycles and it showed fair activity, proving that this morphology is one of the best mixed oxides of CZ for oxidation.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar se um protocolo baseado no método Mat Pilates, a curto prazo, é eficaz para reduzir o risco de quedas em idosas. MÉTODO: Participaram do estudo 16 idosas (60 anos ou mais). Antes e depois do programa de treinamento foram realizadas avaliações de equilíbrio estático (Teste de Romberg Aguçado), equilíbrio dinâmico (Escala de Equilíbrio de Berg), força muscular de membros inferiores (teste de sentar-e-levantar de 30 segundos), mobilidade funcional (Timed-Up-and-Go) e marcha no solo (avaliação cinemática). O treinamento teve duração de cinco semanas (duas sessões semanais) e foi realizado em duplas. RESULTADOS: Após a intervenção com o método Mat Pilates houve melhoras significativas na força muscular, equilíbrio estático e dinâmico, mobilidade funcional, velocidade de marcha e comprimento de passo e passada. CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que um protocolo baseado no método Mat Pilates, mesmo em um período curto de intervenção, é uma alternativa eficiente para a população idosa, o que foi constatado por meio da melhora dos parâmetros avaliados, que, por sua vez, estão relacionados a uma redução do risco de quedas em idosas


OBJETIVO: El objetivo del presente estudio fue verificar si un protocolo, basado en el Método Mat Pilates, a corto plazo, resulta eficaz para reducir el riesgo de caídas en mujeres mayores de 60 años. MÉTODO: Dieciseis mujeres de 60 años o más participaron en este estudio. Antes y después del entrenamiento, fueron sometidas a evaluaciones de equilibrio estático, equilibrio dinámico, fuerza muscular de extremidades inferiores, movilidad funcional y marcha. Se llevaron a cabo dos entrenamientos a la semana por parejas durante cinco semanas. RESULTADOS: Después de la intervención, se encontraron mejoras en la fuerza muscular, equilibrio estático y dinámico, movilidad funcional, velocidad de la marcha y longitud del paso y zancada. CONCLUSIÓN: Se encontraron mejoras de Mat Pilates, a pesar de la corta duración, es una alternativa de intervención eficiente, que se verificó a través de las mejoras en los parámetros evaluados, que están relacionadas con la reducción del riesgo de caídas en ancianos


OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to verify if a short-term training based on the Mat Pilates Method is effective to reduce the risk of falls in older women. METHOD: Sixteen women aged 60 years or more participated in this study. Before and after the training, they performed evaluations of static balance (Romberg test), dynamic balance (Berg Balance Scale), lower limb muscle strength (30-second sit to stand test), functional mobility (Timed-Up-and-Go test) and gait (kinematic evaluation). The training occurred during five weeks (two weekly sessions) and occurred in pairs. RESULTS: After the intervention, there were significant improvements on muscle strength, static and dynamic balance, functional mobility, gait velocity, and step and stride length. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that a protocol based on the Mat Pilates method, despite the short duration, is an efficient intervention alternative, which was verified through the improvements on the parameters evaluated, that are related to a reduction in the risk of falls in the elderly

ABSTRACT

Obesity and ancylostomiasis are considered public health problems. Recent studies have shown that infection by intestinal helminths in obese individuals can ameliorate metabolic disorder and improve glucose tolerance by decreasing both insulin resistance and low-intensity inflammation. However, few helminth species have been studied in this context, and some modulation mechanisms still require deeper investigation. Therefore, the present work aimed to investigate the role of experimental infection with Ancylostoma ceylanicum in the modulation of the immune response in an obese experimental model. Four groups of hamsters were used as follows: two groups were submitted to a hyperlipidic and hypercaloric diet capable of inducing obesity, one infected and the other uninfected; and two normonourished control groups, one infected and one uninfected by A. ceylanicum. Biochemical, haematological, parasitological and immunological parameters were evaluated. The results demonstrated that A. ceylanicum infection accentuated weight loss in obese animals compared to normonourished animals. However, obesity reduced the recovery of worms and oviposition of the females, and both infected groups showed decreased levels of haemoglobin, albumin, iron and erythrocytes. Significant relations were observed for pathogenesis in the following cases: infection interfered in lipid metabolism, which increased levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the obese group, and caused a decrease in HDL levels in both groups. Obesity led to an increase in glucose levels, and the infection exacerbated this parameter in both the normonourished and obese groups. Inflammation was intensified in obese animals that showed elevated macrophage and neutrophil activation in adipose tissue, enlargement of the spleen and accumulation of lipids in the liver and faeces. Despite the decrease in IFN-γ levels, the infection did not potentiated the expression of the Foxp3, IL-10 and IL-2 transcription factor for any of the infected groups, markers that could positively compensate the host from the damage caused by obesity.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a significant polymer that is based on renewable biomass resources. The production of PLA by polycondensation using heterogeneous catalysis is a focus for sustainable and economical processes. A series of samples comprising 12-tungstophosphoric acid (H3PW) supported on activated carbon, silica, and alumina induced the catalytic polymerization of D,L-lactic acid to form blends of PLA. The catalysts were characterized by multiple techniques to confirm the integrity of the Keggin anion as well as the acidity, which is the key property for relating structure to activity. The best reaction conditions were established for H3PW/C and tested for the other supported catalysts. The obtained polymer was a blend that was characterized as an enantiomeric excess (ee) of as much as 95% L-PLA (PLLA) with a mass average molar mass (M w ) of approximately 14,900 daltons. The role of H3PW in these polymerizations was demonstrated, i.e., without the Keggin acid, only oligomeric units (M w < 10,000 daltons) could be obtained. Additionally, inverse relationships between the M w of PLA and the enthalpy (-ΔH) of the strongest sites of the catalysts were distinguished, i.e., PLAMw-H3PW/C > PLAMw-H3PW/Al2O3 > PLAMw-H3PW/SiO2, whereas the acidity (-ΔH) order was as follows: H3PW/SiO2 > H3PW/Al2O3 > H3PW/C. These findings could be attributed to the correct tuning of strength and the accessibility of the sites to produce longer polymeric chains.

ABSTRACT

Herein, a combination of heteropolyacids and ionic liquids as a catalytic system was studied for the Biginelli multicomponent reaction; the positive ionic liquid effect associated with the acidic strength of zeolite-supported heteropolyacids made this combination an efficient catalytic system for the multicomponent synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one/thione derivatives. The acidic strength effect was evaluated, and a range was determined in which the reaction provided better results. The mechanism of the reaction was also investigated in the presence and absence of ionic liquids, and two features of paramount importance were revealed: the mechanism could be tuned to proceed through only one reaction path among three possibilities and the kinetics of the reaction was significantly faster in the presence of an ionic liquid.

Solitary pancreatic metastases are even less frequent, and there are few reports regarding surgical resection. We report the case of a 77-year-old female patient diagnosed with a single cephalo-pancreatic metastasis of renal cell carcinoma, 16 years after a total nephrectomy. The patient underwent successful pancreaticoduodenectomy, and the diagnosis was confirmed. A subsequent positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed disease relapse, and tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment with sunitinib was initiated. After 1 year and 4 months, the PET-computed tomography scan showed a complete radiologic response.

A alteração na temperatura de um tecido pode promover efeitos fisiológicos que levam a alterações circulatórias e nervosas, tais como vasodilatação e aumento na flexibilidade. Objetivo: Avaliar, através de uma avaliação neuromuscular não invasiva, como a termoterapia influencia na força muscular e nos sinais mioelétricos do bíceps braquial em contração isométrica. Métodos: Dezessete voluntários foram orientados a fazer contração isométrica do músculo bíceps braquial concomitantemente com a eletromiografia de superfície. A avaliação eletromiográfica e de força foram realizadas antes e após a intervenção com recursos termoterapêuticos: gelo (15 minutos) e ultrassom continuo (1MHz, 0.8W/cm2, 7 minutos). Resultados: Mostraram que as mulheres possuem menos força e ativam menos unidades motoras. No entanto, a frequência de disparos elétricos nas vias efetoras é maior, o que indica maior propensão à fadiga. Após a aplicação do calor, não foram observadas diferenças na resposta neuromuscular do bíceps braquial em contração. Já a crioterapia, promoveu redução significativa na força e no número de unidades motoras ativadas durante a contração. O resfriamento do tecido muscular promove a diminuição da ação das fibras musculares, uma vez que há redução da velocidade da condução do impulso nervoso e do reflexo do arco miotático. Além disso, a crioterapia também diminui a sensibilidade dos órgãos tendinosos de Golgi, aumenta a viscosidade sanguínea, provoca a vasoconstrição. Todos estes fatores, somam-se para culminar na diminuição da ativação neuromuscular e, consequentemente, na redução da força do músculo


The change in temperature of a biological tissue can promote physiological effects that lead to circulatory and nerve changes, such as vasodilation and increased flexibility. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate, through a noninvasive neuromuscular assessment, how thermotherapy influences the muscular strength and the myoelectric signals of the biceps brachial in isometric contraction. Methods: Seventeen volunteers were instructed to perform isometric contraction of the brachial biceps muscle concomitantly with surface electromyography. Electromyographic and force evaluation were performed before and after the intervention with thermotherapeutic resources that consisted of ice therapy for 15 minutes and continuous ultrasound (1MHz, 0.8W/cm2) for 7 minutes. Results: Women have less strength and fewer motor units. However, the frequency of electric inputs of the effector pathways is higher, which indicates a greater propensity to fatigue. After the application of heat, no differences were observed in the neuromuscular response of the contracting brachial biceps. The cryotherapy, however, promoted a significant reduction in the strength and number of motor units activated during the contraction. Conclusion: The cooling of muscle tissue promotes a decrease of muscle fibers activities, since there is a reduction in the velocity of nerve impulse conduction and the reflex of the myotatic arch. In addition, cryotherapy also decreases the sensitivity of the Golgi tendon organs, increases blood viscosity, and causes vasoconstriction. All these factors are combined to culminate in the decrease of neuromuscular activation and, consequently, in the reduction of muscle strength

ABSTRACT

Although obesity is well established in hamsters, studies using diets with high levels of simple carbohydrate associated with lipids are necessary to assess the impact of this type of food in the body. In this study a high sugar and butter diet (HSB) and high temperature were employed towards this end. Obesity was successfully induced at a temperature of 30.3°C to 30.9°C after 38 days feeding the animals an HSB diet. It was shown that although diet is important for the induction of obesity, temperature is also essential because at a temperature slightly below the one required, obesity was not induced, even when the animals were fed for a longer period (150 days).The obese clinical condition was accompanied by biochemical and hematological changes, as increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels and increased leukocyte numbers, similar to alterations observed in obese humans. ABSTRACT

This study compared the course of Ancylostoma ceylanicum infection in hamsters infected with different inocula and the consequences for the host and helminth populations. The average of adult worms recovered, according to the number of third stage larva used, were 28.0, 24.8, 24.6, and 24.8% to inocula size of 25 L3, 75 L3, 125 L3, and 250 L3, respectively. The size of the inoculum did not affect the establishment, survival, or fecundity of adult helminths. Reductions in the red blood cell and hemoglobin levels in the infected group were inversely proportional to the number of white blood cells. Moreover, differential cell counting revealed a positive correlation between the worm load and leucocyte numbers. The humoral response against excretion-secretion antigens was more robust and sensitive compared with the response against crude extract, with no direct linear correlation with the number of worms. The effect of the population density was more evident in females.
