ABSTRACT

Melanin, the most abundant skin chromophore, is produced by melanocytes and is one of the key components responsible for mediating the skin's response to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Because of its antioxidant, radical scavenging, and broadband UV absorbing properties, melanin reduces the penetration of UVR into the nuclei of keratinocytes. Despite its long-established photoprotective role, there is evidence that melanin may also induce oxidative DNA damage in keratinocytes after UV exposure and therefore be involved in the development of melanoma. The present work aimed at evaluating the dependence of UV-induced DNA damage on melanin content and distribution, using reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) models. Tanned and light RHE were irradiated with a 233 nm UV-C LED source at 60 mJ/cm2 and a UV lamp at 3 mJ/cm2. Higher UV-mediated free radicals and DNA damage were detected in tanned RHE with significantly higher melanin content than in light RHE. The melanin distribution in the individual models can explain the lack of photoprotection. Fluorescence lifetime-based analysis and Fontana-Masson staining revealed a non-homogeneous distribution and absence of perinuclear melanin in the tanned RHE compared to the in vivo situation in humans. Extracellularly dispersed epidermal melanin interferes with photoprotection of the keratinocytes.

ABSTRACT

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light leads to acute and chronic UV damage and is the main risk factor for the development of skin cancer. In most countries with western lifestyle, the topical application of sunscreens on UV-exposed skin areas is by far the most frequently used preventive measure against sunburn. Further than preventing sunburns, increasing numbers of consumers are appreciating sunscreens with a medium- to high-level sun protective factor (SPF) as basis for sustainable-skin ageing or skin cancer prevention programs. However, recent investigations indicate that clinically significant DNA damages as well as a lasting impairment of cutaneous immunosurveillance already occur far below the standard of one minimal erythema dose (MED) sunburn level, which contributes to the current discussion of the clinical value of high-protective SPF values. Ex vivo investigations on human skin showed that the application of SPF30 reduces DNA damage for a day long sun exposure (24 MED) drastically by about 53% but is significantly surpassed by SPF100 reducing DNA damage by approx. 73%. Further analysis on different SPF protection levels in UV-exposed cell culture assays focusing on IL-18, cell vitality and cis/trans-urocanic acid support these findings. Whereas SPF30 and SPF50+ sunscreens already offer a solid UVB cover for most indications, our results indicate that SPF100 provides significant additional protection against mutagenic (non-apoptotic-) DNA damage and functional impairment of the cutaneous immunosurveillance and therefore qualifies as an optimized sunscreen for specifically vulnerable patient groups such as immunosuppressed patients, or skin cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

One of the causal agents of bacterial canker is Pseudomonas amygdali pv. morsprunorum-Pam (formerly Pseudomonas syringae pv. morsprunorum). Recently detected in Chile, Pam is known to cause lesions in the aerial parts of the plant, followed by more severe symptoms such as cankers and gummosis in the later stages of the disease. This study presents the design of PCR and LAMP detection methods for the specific and sensitive identification of Pseudomonas amygdali pv. morsprunorum (Pam) from cherry trees. Twelve Pseudomonas isolates were collected, sequenced, and later characterized by Multi-locus Sequence Analysis (MLSA) and Average Nucleotide Identity by blast (ANIb). Three of them (11116B2, S1 Pam, and S2 Pam) were identified as Pseudomonas amygdali pv. morsprunorum and were used to find specific genes through RAST server, by comparing their genome with that of other Pseudomonas, including isolates from other Pam strains. The effector gene HopAU1 was selected for the design of primers to be used for both techniques, evaluating sensitivity and specificity, and the ability to detect Pam directly from plant tissues. While the PCR detection limit was 100 pg of purified bacterial DNA per reaction, the LAMP assays were able to detect up to 1 fg of purified DNA per reaction. Similar results were observed using plant tissues, LAMP being more sensitive than PCR, including when using DNA extracted from infected plant tissues. Both detection methods were tested in the presence of 30 other bacterial genera, with LAMP being more sensitive than PCR.

ABSTRACT

The inactivation of multi resistant pathogens is an important clinical need. One approach is UV-C irradiation, which was previously not possible in vivo due to cytotoxicity. Recently, far UV-C irradiation at λ < 240 nm was successfully used on skin with negligible damage. A potential application site is the nasal vestibule, where MRSA accumulates and cannot be treated using antiseptics. We irradiated 3D mucosa models and excised human mucosa with 222 and 233 nm far UV-C in comparison to 254 nm and broadband UV-B. Eradication efficiency was evaluated by counting colony forming units; irritation potential was evaluated by hen's egg-chorioallantoic membrane assay and trans epithelial electrical resistance; cell viability was assessed by MTT. DNA damage and cell protective mechanisms were evaluated immunohistopathologically. On mucosa models, MRSA reduced by ≈ 5 log10 for 60 mJ/cm2 irradiation at 233 nm. A slightly increased cell viability was observed after 24 h. Lower doses showed lower irritation potential than the positive controls or commercial mouthwash, while 80 mJ/cm2 had strong irritation potential. DNA damage occurred only superficially and decreased after 24 h. On excised human mucosa, < 10% of keratinocytes were affected after 150 mJ/cm2 222 nm or 60 mJ/cm2 233 nm.

ABSTRACT

The New World Vultures (Cathartidae) include seven species of obligate scavengers that, despite their ecological relevance, present critical information gaps around their evolutionary history and conservation. Insights into their phylogenetic relationships in recent years has enabled the addressing of such information gaps through approaches based on phylogeny. We reconstructed the ancestral area in America of the current species using two regionalization schemes and methods: Biogeography with Bayesian Evolutionary Analysis (BioGeoBears) and Bayesian Binary Model-Monte Carlo Markov Chains (BBM-MCMC). Then, we identified the priority species and areas for conservation by means of the Evolutionary Distinctiveness index (ED), as a proxy of the uniqueness of species according to phylogeny, and the Global Endangerment index (GE), mapping phylogenetic diversity. We found that the ancestral area of New World Vultures in America corresponds to South America, with dispersal processes that led to a recolonization of North America by Coragyps atratus, Gymnogyps californianus and Cathartes aura. We identified the Black Vulture, G. californianus and Vultur gryphus as priority species based on ED and "Evolutionary Distinct Globally Endangered" (EDGE) indexes, and the lowlands of Amazon River basin and the Orinoco basin and some tributaries areas of the Guiana Shield were identified as the priority areas when mapping the phylogenetic diversity. This study highlights the importance of filling knowledge gaps of species of conservation concern through the integration of evolutionary and ecological information and tools and, thus, developing adequate strategies to enhance the preservation of these species in the face of the current loss of biodiversity.

ABSTRACT

The growing threat of multi-drug resistant pathogens and airborne microbial diseases has highlighted the need to improve or develop novel disinfection methods for clinical environments. Conventional ultraviolet C (UV-C) lamps effectively inactivate microorganisms but are harmful to human skin and eyes upon exposure. The use of new 233 nm far UV-C LEDs as an antiseptic can overcome those limitations. In this research, the light penetration into the skin was elucidated for the UV-C region (<300 nm) by measuring the scattering and absorption of skin layers and inverse Monte Carlo simulation, and further confirmed by the first clinical pilot trial in which healthy volunteers were irradiated with a dose of 60 mJ/cm2 at 233 nm. The radiation is strongly absorbed in the stratum corneum, resulting in minimal skin damage without inducing inflammatory responses. The results suggest that 233 nm far UV-C light emitting diodes (LEDs) could effectively inactivate microorganisms, while being safe and soft for the skin.

Far-UVC radiation sources of wavelengths 222 nm and 233 nm represent an interesting potential alternative for the antiseptic treatment of the skin due to their high skin compatibility. Nevertheless, no studies on far-UVC-induced DNA damage in different skin types have been published to date, which this study aims for. After irradiating the skin with far-UVC of the wavelengths 222 and 233 nm as well as broadband UVB, the tissue was screened for cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer-positive (CPD+ ) cells using immunohistochemistry. The epidermal DNA damage was lower in dark skin types than in fair skin types after irradiation at 233 nm. Contrary to this, irradiation at 222 nm caused no skin type-dependent differences, which can be attributed to the decreased penetration depth of radiation. UVB showed the relatively strongest differences between light and dark skin types when using a suberythemal dose of 3 mJ/cm2 . As melanin is known for its photoprotective effect, we evaluated the ratio of melanin content in the stratum basale and stratum granulosum in samples of different skin types using two-photon excited fluorescence lifetime imaging (TPE-FLIM) finding a higher ratio up to skin type IV-V. As far-UVC is known to penetrate only into the upper layers of the viable skin, the aforementioned melanin ratio could explain the less pronounced differences between skin types after irradiation with far-UVC compared to UVB.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Analizar la necesidad de regeneración ósea guiada en pacientes sometidos a terapia implantológica entre el año 2012 y 2019 del Hospital San Camilo, San Felipe. Material y Método: Estudio observacional retrospectivo. Se incluyeron todos los pacientes pertenecientes al programa de implantes entre el 2012 y 2019. Los pacientes fueron organizados de acuerdo a la edad, género, marca de implante, uso de injerto, tiempo de carga y tasa de pérdida. Estos datos se evaluaron empleando estadística descriptiva calculando frecuencias y porcentajes en tablas de contingencias. Resultados: Se incluyeron 182 pacientes. La distribución por sexo fue de 121 mujeres y 61 hombres. La edad promedio de los pacientes fue de 51,23 años. El 41,76% casos del total requirió ROG. El 74,3% del grupo de implantes unitarios requirió injerto óseo. Sólo un 4,71% del grupo de sobredentadura requirió de injerto óseo. El tiempo de carga promedio fue de 3,68 meses. La tasa de pérdida en implantes fue de 3,85%. Conclusiones: El conocimiento y análisis de estos datos permite replantear la distribución de los recursos con el fin de realizar tratamientos más predecibles, disminuyendo las complicaciones y generando un ahorro de presupuesto.


Objective: To determine and analyze the need for guided bone regeneration (GBR) in patients who underwent implant therapy between 2012 and 2019 at the San Camilo Hospital, San Felipe. Material and methods: Retrospective observational study. All patients belonging to the implant program were included, with the need for either single implants or overdentures, which were installed between 2012 and 2019. Patients were organized according to their age, gender, implant brand, use of graft, loading time and loss rate. These data were evaluated using descriptive statistics calculating frequencies and percentages in contingency tables. Results: A total of 182 cases of implants were included. The distribution by sex was 121 women and 61 men. The average age of the patients was 51,23 years. The percentage of cases that required GBR was 41.76%. In the single implant group, 74.3% of cases required bone grafting. In the overdenture group, only 4.71% required bone grafting. The average loading time was 3,68 months. The implant loss rate was 3,85%. Conclusions: The knowledge and analysis of these data allow us to evaluate the distribution of resources to carry out more predictable treatments to reduce complications and generate budget savings.

ABSTRACT

Motivated by the current introduction of extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) into chip manufacturing processes, and thus the transition to electron-induced chemistry within the respective resist materials, we have studied low energy electron-induced fragmentation of 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid (TFMAA). This compound is chosen as a potential resist component, whereby fluorination enhances the EUV adsorption and may at the same time promote electron-induced dissociation. Dissociative ionization and dissociative electron attachment are studied, and to aid the interpretation of the observed fragmentation channels, the respective threshold values are calculated at the DFT and coupled cluster level of theory. Not surprisingly, we find significantly more extensive fragmentation in DI than in DEA and in fact, the only significant DEA fragmentation channel is the cleavage of HF from the parent molecule upon electron attachment. Rearrangement and new bond formation are substantial in DI and are, in fact, similar to DEA, mainly associated with HF formation. The observed fragmentation reactions are discussed in relation to the underlying reactions and potential implications for the suitability of TFMAA as a component of EUVL resist materials.

ABSTRACT

Aging is a physiological process that generates progressive decline in many cellular functions. There are many theories of aging, and one of great importance in recent years is the mitochondrial theory of aging, in which mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs at advanced age could be responsible for the aged phenotype. In this context, there is diverse information about mitochondrial dysfunction in aging, in different models and different organs. Specifically, in the brain, different studies have shown mitochondrial dysfunction mainly in the cortex; however, until now, no study has shown all the defects in hippocampal mitochondria in aged female C57BL/6J mice. We performed a complete analysis of mitochondrial function in 3-month-old and 20-month-old (mo) female C57BL/6J mice, specifically in the hippocampus of these animals. We observed an impairment in bioenergetic function, indicated by a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential, O2 consumption, and mitochondrial ATP production. Additionally, there was an increase in ROS production in the aged hippocampus, leading to the activation of antioxidant signaling, specifically the Nrf2 pathway. It was also observed that aged animals had deregulation of calcium homeostasis, with more sensitive mitochondria to calcium overload and deregulation of proteins related to mitochondrial dynamics and quality control processes. Finally, we observed a decrease in mitochondrial biogenesis with a decrease in mitochondrial mass and deregulation of mitophagy. These results show that during the aging process, damaged mitochondria accumulate, which could contribute to or be responsible for the aging phenotype and age-related disabilities.

Background and Objectives: With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant decrease in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening leading to delayed diagnoses and increased cancer deaths. To mitigate these burgeoning gaps in care, we developed a medical student-led service learning project aimed at improving rates of colorectal cancer screening at the Farrell Health Center (FHC), a primary care practice within the Ambulatory Care Network (ACN) at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Methods: A cohort of 973 FHC patients aged 50-75 years were identified as possibly overdue for screening. Student volunteers reviewed patient charts to confirm screening eligibility and then contacted patients to offer colonoscopy or stool DNA test. Following the patient outreach intervention, medical student volunteers completed a questionnaire to assess the educational value for the service-learning experience. Results: Fifty-three percent of identified patients were due for CRC screening; 67.8% of eligible patients were reached by volunteers. Among the patients reached, 47.0% were referred for CRC screening. No statistical significance was observed between likelihood of CRC screening acceptance and patient age or sex; 87% of medical student volunteers felt that the service-learning project was a valuable educational experience. Conclusion: The student-led patient telehealth outreach program is an effective model for identifying and referring patients overdue for CRC screening and an enriching educational experience for preclinical medical students. The structure provides a valuable framework to address gaps in health care maintenance.

X-Ray irradiation of interstellar ice analogues has recently been proven to induce desorption of molecules, thus being a potential source for the still-unexplained presence of gaseous organics in the coldest regions of the interstellar medium, especially in protoplanetary disks. The proposed desorption mechanism involves the Auger decay of excited molecules following soft X-ray absorption, known as X-ray induced electron-stimulated desorption (XESD). Aiming to quantify electron induced desorption in XESD, we irradiated pure methanol (CH3 OH) ices at 23 K with 505 eV electrons, to simulate the Auger electrons originating from the O 1s core absorption. Desorption yields of neutral fragments and the effective methanol depletion cross-section were quantitatively determined by mass spectrometry. We derived desorption yields in molecules per incident electron for CO, CO2 , CH3 OH, CH4 /O, H2 O, H2 CO, C2 H6 and other less abundant but more complex organic products. We obtained desorption yields remarkably similar to XESD values.

Introducción: Las personas con esquizofrenia presentan graves dificultades para formar ideas complejas sobre sí mismos y otros, definidas como déficits metacognitivos, junto a menor insight clínico o capacidad para tomar conciencia de poseer un trastorno de salud mental. El presente estudio evaluó dichas alteraciones y las correlaciones entre metacognición, insight clínico y sintomatología en pacientes ambulatorios con esquizofrenia. Metodología: Se diseñó un estudio cuantitativo, relacional, prospectivo, transversal y observacional. Treinta y un pacientes ambulatorios del Centro Diurno "Luz y Esperanza" de Talca (Chile) fueron evaluados utilizando la Metacognitive Assessment Scale-Abbreviated, Scale of Unawareness of Mental Disorder y la Escala de Síndromes Positivo y Negativo, en el período 2019-2020. Resultados: Se encontraron bajos puntajes metacognitivos y de insight clínico, destacando las correlaciones estadísticamente significativas de puntaje metacognitivo total, Autorreflexividad y Maestría con escasa Conciencia de poseer un trastorno y las subescalas de síntomas negativos y desorganización. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados respaldan la inclusión de los déficits metacognitivos y de insight clínico en los modelos de esquizofrenia. Se discute sobre su potencial aporte en el diseño de intervenciones psicoterapéuticas que promuevan estas capacidades e influyan en los síntomas negativos y de desorganización. Es necesario replicar estudios sobre estas variables en nuestro país, que incluyan un mayor número de participantes.


Introduction: People with schizophrenia have serious disturbances in forming complex ideas about themselves and others, defined as metacognitive deficits, along with less clinical insight or awareness of mental disorder The present study assessed these disturbances and the correlations between metacognition, clinical insight and symptomatology in outpatients with schizophrenia. Methods: A quantitative, relational, prospective, cross-sectional and observational study was designed. Thirty-one outpatients of the "Luz y Esperanza" Day Center in Talca (Chile) were evaluated using the Metacognitive Assessment Scale-Abbreviated, Scale of Unawareness of Mental Disorder and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, in the period 2019-2020. Results: Low metacognitive and clinical insight scores were found, highlighting statistically significant correlations of total metacognitive score, Self-Reflectivity and Mastery with low Awareness of mental disorder and the subscales of negative symptoms and disorganization. Conclusions: Our results support the inclusion of metacognitive deficits and clinical insight in schizophrenia models. Its potential contribution to the design of psychotherapeutic interventions that promote these abilities and influence negative and disorganized symptoms is discussed. It is necessary to replicate studies about these variables in our country, including a greater number of participants.

Bilgewater is a shipboard multi-component oily wastewater, combining numerous wastewater sources. A better understanding of bilgewater emulsions is required for proper wastewater management to meet discharge regulations. In this study, we developed 360 emulsion samples based on commonly used Navy cleaner data and previous bilgewater composition studies. Oil value (OV) was obtained from image analysis of oil/creaming layer and validated by oil separation (OS) which was experimentally determined using a gravimetric method. OV (%) showed good agreement with OS (%), indicating that a simple image-based parameter can be used for emulsion stability prediction model development. An ANOVA analysis was conducted of the five variables (Cleaner, Salinity, Suspended Solids [SS], pH, and Temperature) that significantly impacted estimates of OV, finding that the Cleaner, Salinity, and SS variables were statistically significant (p < 0.05), while pH and Temperature were not. In general, most cleaners showed improved oil separation with salt additions. Novel machine learning (ML)-based predictive models of both classification and regression for bilgewater emulsion stability were then developed using OV. For classification, the random forest (RF) classifiers achieved the most accurate prediction with F1-score of 0.8224, while in regression-based models the decision tree (DT) regressor showed the highest prediction of emulsion stability with the average mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.1611. Turbidity also showed a good emulsion prediction with RF regressor (MAE of 0.0559) and RF classifier (F1-score of 0.9338). One predictor variable removal test showed that Salinity, SS, and Temperature are the most impactful variables in the developed models. This is the first study to use image processing and machine learning for the prediction of oil separation for the application of bilgewater assessment within the marine sector.

The mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm ) is a parameter often used to determine mitochondrial function; therefore, it can be used to determine the integrity and functionality of cells. A decrement of ΔΨm is implicated in several inflammatory-related pathologies, such phenomena can be related to COVID-19 infection. The present work aimed to compare the ΔΨm in leucocytes (human PBMCs; HPBMC) isolated from healthy control (HC) subjects, patients with COVID-19 (C-19), recovered subjects at 40 ± 13 (R1) and 335 ± 20 (R2) days after infection (dai). Obtained data showed that ΔΨm decreased in HPBMC of subjects with C-19, R1, and R2 compared with HC. When analyzing the ΔΨm data by sex, in females, a significant decrease was observed in R1 and R2 groups versus HC. Regarding men, a significant decrease of ΔΨm was observed in R1, with respect to HC, contrary to R2 group, who reestablished this parameter. Obtained results suggest that the loss of ΔΨm could be related to the long-COVID.

Fucoidan is a polysaccharide obtained from marine brown algae, with anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immune-enhancing properties, thus, fucoidan may be used as an alternative treatment (complementary to prescribed medical therapy) for COVID-19 recovery. This work aimed to determine the ex-vivo effects of treatment with fucoidan (20 µg/mL) on mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm, using a cationic cyanine dye, 3,3'-dihexyloxacarbocyanine iodide (DiOC6(3)) on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (HPBMC) isolated from healthy control (HC) subjects, COVID-19 patients (C-19), and subjects that recently recovered from COVID-19 (R1, 40 ± 13 days after infection). In addition, ex-vivo treatment with fucoidan (20 and 50 µg/mL) was evaluated on ΔΨm loss induced by carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP, 150 µM) in HPBMC isolated from healthy subjects (H) and recovered subjects at 11 months post-COVID-19 (R2, 335 ± 20 days after infection). Data indicate that SARS-CoV-2 infection induces HPBMC loss of ΔΨm, even 11 months after infection, however, fucoidan promotes recovery of ΔΨm in PBMCs from COVID-19 recovered subjects. Therefore, fucoidan may be a potential treatment to diminish long-term sequelae from COVID-19, using mitochondria as a therapeutic target for the recovery of cellular homeostasis.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Most studies of solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients with COVID-19 focus on outcomes within one month of illness onset. Delayed mortality in SOT recipients hospitalized for COVID-19 has not been fully examined. METHODS: We used data from a multicenter registry to calculate mortality by 90 days following initial SARS-CoV-2 detection in SOT recipients hospitalized for COVID-19 and developed multivariable Cox proportional-hazards models to compare risk factors for death by days 28 and 90. RESULTS: Vital status at day 90 was available for 936 of 1117 (84%) SOT recipients hospitalized for COVID-19: 190 of 936 (20%) died by 28 days and an additional 56 of 246 deaths (23%) occurred between days 29 and 90. Factors associated with mortality by day 90 included: age > 65 years [aHR 1.8 (1.3-2.4), p =<0.001], lung transplant (vs. non-lung transplant) [aHR 1.5 (1.0-2.3), p=0.05], heart failure [aHR 1.9 (1.2-2.9), p=0.006], chronic lung disease [aHR 2.3 (1.5-3.6), p<0.001] and body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m 2 [aHR 1.5 (1.1-2.0), p=0.02]. These associations were similar for mortality by day 28. Compared to diagnosis during early 2020 (March 1-June 19, 2020), diagnosis during late 2020 (June 20-December 31, 2020) was associated with lower mortality by day 28 [aHR 0.7 (0.5-1.0, p=0.04] but not by day 90 [aHR 0.9 (0.7-1.3), p=0.61]. CONCLUSIONS: In SOT recipients hospitalized for COVID-19, >20% of deaths occurred between 28 and 90 days following SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. Future investigations should consider extending follow-up duration to 90 days for more complete mortality assessment.

ABSTRACT

Mortality among patients hospitalized for COVID-19 has declined over the course of the pandemic. Mortality trends specifically in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR) are unknown. Using data from a multicenter registry of SOTR hospitalized for COVID-19, we compared 28-day mortality between early 2020 (March 1, 2020-June 19, 2020) and late 2020 (June 20, 2020-December 31, 2020). Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess comorbidity-adjusted mortality. Time period of diagnosis was available for 1435/1616 (88.8%) SOTR and 971/1435 (67.7%) were hospitalized: 571/753 (75.8%) in early 2020 and 402/682 (58.9%) in late 2020 (p < .001). Crude 28-day mortality decreased between the early and late periods (112/571 [19.6%] vs. 55/402 [13.7%]) and remained lower in the late period even after adjusting for baseline comorbidities (aOR 0.67, 95% CI 0.46-0.98, p = .016). Between the early and late periods, the use of corticosteroids (≥6 mg dexamethasone/day) and remdesivir increased (62/571 [10.9%] vs. 243/402 [61.5%], p < .001 and 50/571 [8.8%] vs. 213/402 [52.2%], p < .001, respectively), and the use of hydroxychloroquine and IL-6/IL-6 receptor inhibitor decreased (329/571 [60.0%] vs. 4/492 [1.0%], p < .001 and 73/571 [12.8%] vs. 5/402 [1.2%], p < .001, respectively). Mortality among SOTR hospitalized for COVID-19 declined between early and late 2020, consistent with trends reported in the general population. The mechanism(s) underlying improved survival require further study.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To present a case series of encephalitis patients with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antibodies, attending two neurological referral centers in a three-year period. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive, comparative study included child and adult patients in two neurological populations, positive for antibodies against the NR1 and NR2 subunits of the glutamate (NMDA) receptor in serum and CSF, as determined during a three-year period. RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were included (40 children and 26 adults). Male patients were more affected (M: F ratio was 1:0.6). No differences in progression or hospitalization time were observed between groups. In children, 35% of patients showed herpetic infection before autoimmune encephalitis (P = 0.01). Among viral prodromal symptoms, upper respiratory tract infection (P = 0.02) and fever (P = 0.001) predominated in children, while infectious gastroenteritis was more frequent in adults (P = 0.03). Among neuropsychiatric signs, mental confusion (P = 0.0001) and orofacial dyskinesia/oromandibular dystonia (P = 0.0001) were frequent in children, while emotional lability (P = 0.03), catatonia (P = 0.0001), and headache (P = 0.005) predominated in adults. The score in the modified Rankin scale on admission was higher in children (4.3 ± 0.8 vs. 2.2 ± 1.3, P = 0.0001), but at one-year of clinical follow up no significant differences were found. CONCLUSIONS: Male patients were predominantly affected in our population. One-third of all patients developed prodromal infection. Neuropsychiatric clinical complaints were different in children and adults. However, post-hospitalization recovery was similar between groups.
