ABSTRACT
The work of medical physics departments in the national health service encompasses physics, electronic and mechanical engineering, computing, mathematics, biophysics and bioengineering. In some cases, there are separate bioengineering departments, but for the purpose of this article, no distinction is made.

We describe the development of a body-powered upper limb prosthesis fitted with a cosmetic functioning hand. The features and advantages of the new design--the PMR (Princess Margaret Rose) prosthesis--are discussed and the clinical results in 15 patients fitted with the prosthesis after above-elbow amputation are described.

A simple, inexpensive low-pressure air bed has been developed for use in situations where decubitus ulcers may arise. This bed is currently being evaluated in patients with spinal injuries, both in the hospital situation and in the home. Early experience is highly encouraging as regular turning of the patient can be safely omitted. We feel that widespread use of this bed could greatly decrease the incidence of pressure sores.
