ABSTRACT

The seed germination index (GI) serves as the principal determinant that impedes the integration of aerobic composting products into agricultural lands. The current research work predominantly focuses on exploring the correlation between physical and chemical indicators of the compost products and GI, neglecting the fundamental cause. This study systematically analyzed the composition of GI aqueous extracts from compost products derived from kitchen waste under various composting methodologies, with nitrogen, carbon, and inorganic salt as critical factors. The analytical work concluded that acetic acid, formic acid, and ammonium were the inhibitory factors influencing GI. Validation experiments introduced inhibitory factors, yielding a functional relationship formula depicting GI variations due to a single influential factor. This study conclusively identified acetic acid as the primary constraint, establishing that its inhibitory concentration corresponded to 70 % GI stands at 85 mg/L. This study will provide guidelines for the future research on enhancing aerobic composting techniques.

ABSTRACT

The low C/N ratio, high moisture content, and low porosity of food waste require the addition of bulking agents for adjustment during the composting process. However, the effect and mechanism of different bulking agents on the reduction of carbon and nitrogen losses are unclear. Therefore, this study conducted experiments to evaluate and clarify the differences in carbon and nitrogen transformation between sawdust, rice husk and wheat bran in food waste composting. The results showed that the addition of bulking agents promoted the conversion of carbon and nitrogen into total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) rather than CO2 and NH3. The carbon and nitrogen losses were reduced by 16.00-25.71% and 11.56-29.54%, respectively. Notably, the Sawdust group exhibited the highest carbon retention, whereas the Wheat_bran group demonstrated superior nitrogen retention. The succession of bacterial communities showed that sawdust enhanced the cellulolysis and xylanolysis functions while wheat bran promoted nitrogen fixation. Correlation analysis was further employed to speculate on potential interactions among carbon and nitrogen components. The incorporation of sawdust and rice husk improved humification partly due to the addition of lignocellulose and the accumulation of total dissolved nitrogen (DTN) in the substrate, respectively. In the process of ammonia assimilation, the addition of wheat bran promoted the accumulation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), contributing to the synthesis of TON to a degree. These findings offer cost-effective strategies for conserving carbon and nitrogen from loss in food waste composting by selecting suitable bulking agents, ultimately producing high-quality fertilizer.

ABSTRACT

Composting, reliant on microorganisms, effectively treats kitchen waste. However, it is difficult to precisely understand the specific role of key microorganisms in the composting process by relying solely on experimental research. This study aims to employ machine learning models to explore key microbial genera and to optimize composting systems. After introducing a novel microbiome preprocessing approach, Stacking models were constructed (R2 is about 0.8). The SHAP method (SHapley Additive exPlanations) identified Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Thermobacillus, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter, and Thermobifida as prominent microbial genera (Shapley values ranging from 3.84 to 1.24). Additionally, microbial agents were prepared to target the identified key genera, and experiments demonstrated that the composting quality score was 76.06 for the treatment and 70.96 for the control. The exogenous agents enhanced decomposition and improved compost quality in later stages. In summary, this study opens up a new avenue to identifying key microorganisms and optimizing the biological treatment process.

ABSTRACT

Two classes of ß-thioketiminate ligands, SN chelators (HL1 and HL2) and SNN chelators (HL3 and HL4), were prepared to understand their coordination behavior in copper(I) complex formation. The formation of these copper(I) complexes bearing ß-thioketiminate ligands and their corresponding adducts toward isocyanide, PPh3, and CO was investigated to address two important issues. First, whether the denticity governs the copper(I) thiolate species formation between SN chelators and SNN chelators. Second, how the length of the pendant pyridyl arm affects the coordination and reactivity behaviors of copper(I) complexes. Based on the characterization results, it was found that the denticity of SN chelators and SNN chelators led to different nuclearity of copper(I)-thiolate species. The coordination modes of the pendant pyridyl arm were confirmed by FTIR measurements, which allow us to conclude that the electron donating ability of the LCu fragment is in the order of SNN-chelator (SNN bound) > SNN-chelators (SN bound) > SN-chelator.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the relationship between faith in intuition and moral judgment and the underlying mechanism among Chinese college students using a questionnaire and experimental method. The results showed that levels of faith in intuition predicted more moral wrongness regarding ambiguous hurtful behaviors than unambiguous ones. Additionally, the perceived harm mediated the effect of individuals' levels of faith in intuition on moral wrongness regarding ambiguous harm behaviors but not regarding unambiguous harm behaviors. The results of this study provide empirical evidence on the relationship between faith in intuition and moral judgment in Chinese culture and have implications for future studies of moral judgments.

ABSTRACT

As a novel analytical method based on big data, machine learning model can explore the relationship between different parameters and draw universal conclusions, which was used to predict composting maturity and identify key parameters in this study. The results showed that the Stacking model exhibited excellent prediction accuracy. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Partial Dependence Analysis (PDA) were performed to evaluate the importance of different parameters as well as their optimal interval. Optimal starting conditions should be maintained in the mesophilic state (temperature: 30-45℃, moisture content: 55-65%, pH: 6.3-8.0), and nutrients (total nitrogen > 2.3%, total organic carbon > 35%) should be adjusted in the thermophilic state. Experiments revealed that model-based optimization strategies could improve composting maturity because they could optimize compost microbial flora and perform complex carbon cycle functions. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the enhancement of the composting process.

ABSTRACT

A new asymmetric furan and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (TTFDPP) building block for conjugated polymers is designed and used to generate a donor-acceptor semiconducting polymer, poly[3-(furan-2-yl)-2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-6-(thieno[3,2-b]thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione-alt-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (abbreviated to PTTFDPP-TT), consisting of TTFDPP unit copolymerized with thieno[3,2-b]thiophene comonomer (TT), which is further synthesized. Results demonstrate that PTTFDPP-TT-based thin-film transistors in a bottom-gate bottom-contact device configuration exhibit typical hole-transporting property, with weak temperature dependence for charge carrier mobility from room temperature to 200 °C. In addition, the good solubility of PTTFDPP-TT due to the incorporation of a polar furan unit and an asymmetric conjugated structure makes it able to be solution processed with a less toxic nonchlorinated solvent such as toluene, demonstrating comparable performance with that prepared from chlorinated solution. These results suggest PTTFDPP-TT as a promising organic semiconductor candidate for annealing-free, environmentally benign, and less energy-consuming applications in large-area flexible organic electronic devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The worsening of semen quality, due to the application of Wi-Fi, can be ameliorated by Vitamin E. This study aimed to demonstrate whether a moderate dose of trolox, a new Vitamin E, inhibits oxidative damage on sperms in vitro after exposure to Wi-Fi radiation. METHODS: Each of the twenty qualified semen, gathered from June to October 2014 in eugenics clinic, was separated into four aliquots, including sham, Wi-Fi-exposed, Wi-Fi plus 5 mmol/L trolox, and Wi-Fi plus 10 mmol/L trolox groups. At 0 min, all baseline parameters of the 20 samples were measured in sequence. Reactive oxygen species, glutathione, and superoxide dismutase were evaluated in the four aliquots at 45 and 90 min, as were sperm DNA fragments, sperm mitochondrial potential, relative amplification of sperm mitochondrial DNA, sperm vitality, and progressive and immotility sperm. The parameters were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's posttest. RESULTS: Among Wi-Fi plus 5 mmol/L trolox, Wi-Fi-exposed and Wi-Fi plus 10 mmol/L trolox groups, reactive oxygen species levels (45 min: 3.80 ± 0.41 RLU·10-6·ml-1 vs. 7.50 ± 0.35 RLU·10-6·ml-1 vs. 6.70 ± 0.47 RLU·10-6·ml-1, P < 0.001; 90 min: 5.40 ± 0.21 RLU·10-6·ml-1 vs. 10.10 ± 0.31 RLU·10-6·ml-1 vs. 7.00 ± 0.42 RLU·10-6·ml-1, P < 0.001, respectively), percentages of tail DNA (45 min: 16.8 ± 2.0% vs. 31.9 ± 2.5% vs. 61.3 ± 1.6%, P < 0.001; 90 min: 19.7 ± 1.5% vs. 73.7 ± 1.3% vs. 73.1 ± 1.1%, P < 0.001, respectively), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (45 min: 51.89 ± 1.46 pg/ml vs. 104.89 ± 2.19 pg/ml vs. 106.11 ± 1.81 pg/ml , P = 0.012; 90 min: 79.96 ± 1.73 pg/ml vs. 141.73 ± 2.90 pg/ml vs. 139.06 ± 2.79 pg/ml; P < 0.001), and percentages of immotility sperm (45 min: 27.7 ± 2.7% vs. 41.7 ± 2.2% vs. 41.7 ± 2.5%; 90 min: 29.9 ± 3.3% vs. 58.9 ± 4.0% vs. 63.1 ± 4.0%; all P < 0.001) were lowest, and glutathione peroxidase (45 min: 60.50 ± 1.54 U/ml vs. 37.09 ± 1.77 U/ml vs. 28.18 ± 1.06 U/ml; 90 min: 44.61 ± 1.23 U/ml vs. 16.86 ± 0.93 U/ml vs. 29.94 ± 1.56 U/ml; all P < 0.001), percentages of head DNA (45 min: 83.2 ± 2.0% vs. 68.2 ± 2.5% vs. 38.8 ± 1.6%; 90 min: 80.3 ± 1.5% vs. 26.3 ± 1.3% vs. 26.9 ± 1.1%; all P < 0.001), percentages of sperm vitality (45 min: 89.5 ± 1.6% vs. 70.7 ± 3.1% vs. 57.7 ± 2.4%; 90 min: 80.8 ± 2.2% vs. 40.4 ± 4.0% vs. 34.7 ± 3.9%; all P < 0.001), and progressive sperm (45 min: 69.3 ± 2.7% vs. 55.8 ± 2.2% vs. 55.4 ± 2.5%; 90 min: 67.2 ± 3.3% vs. 38.2 ± 4.0% vs. 33.9 ± 4.0%; all P < 0.001) were highest in Wi-Fi plus 5 mmol/L trolox group at 45 and 90 min, respectively. Other parameters were not affected, while the sham group maintained the baseline. CONCLUSION: This study found that 5 mmol/L trolox protected the Wi-Fi-exposed semen in vitro from the damage of electromagnetic radiation-induced oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm is a life-threatening acute cerebrovascular event. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) incidence rate is higher or lower in elderly population than in middle aged population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Aneurysmal SAH cases were collected retrospectively from the archives of 21 hospitals in Mainland China. All the cases were collected from September 2016 and backward consecutively for a period of time up to 8 years. SAH was initially diagnosed by brain computed tomography (CT). CT angiography (CTA) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was followed and SAH was confirmed to be due to cerebral aneurysm rupture. For cases when multiple bleeding occurred, the age of the first SAH was used in this study. The total incidence from all hospitals at each age group were summed together for females and males respectively; then adjusted by the total population number at each age group for females and males which was from the 2010 population census of the People's Republic of China. RESULTS: In total there were 8,144 cases of intracranial aneurysmal SAH, with 4,861 females and 3,283 males. For females the relative aneurysmal SAH incidence rate started to decrease after around 65 years old, while for males the relative aneurysmal SAH incidence rate started to decrease after around 53 years old. CONCLUSION: Our data tentatively suggest elderly patients may be at a reduced risk of rupture compared with patients who are younger while have similar other risk factors.

ABSTRACT

Herein, the design and synthesis of novel π-extended quinoline-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) [abbreviated as QDPP] motifs and corresponding copolymers named PQDPP-T and PQDPP-2FT for high performing n-type organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) in flexible organic thin film devices are reported. Serving as DPP-flankers in backbones, quinoline is found to effectively tune copolymer optoelectric properties. Compared with TDPP and pyridine-flanked DPP (PyDPP) analogs, widened bandgaps and strengthened electron deficiency are achieved. Moreover, both hole and electron mobility are improved two orders of magnitude compared to those of PyDPP analogs (PPyDPP-T and PPyDPP-2FT). Notably, featuring an all-acceptor-incorporated backbone, PQDPP-2FT exhibits electron mobility of 6.04 cm2 V-1 s-1 , among the highest value in OFETs fabricated on flexible substrates to date. Moreover, due to the widened bandgap and strengthened electron deficiency of PQDPP, n-channel on/off ratio over 105 with suppressed hole transport is first realized in the ambipolar DPP-based copolymers.

ABSTRACT

Noncovalent conformational locks are broadly employed to construct highly planar π-conjugated semiconductors exhibiting substantial charge transport characteristics. However, current chalcogen-based conformational lock strategies for organic semiconductors are limited to S···X (X = O, N, halide) weak interactions. An easily accessible (minimal synthetic steps) and structurally planar selenophene-based building block, 1,2-diethoxy-1,2-bisselenylvinylene (DESVS), with novel Se···O noncovalent conformational locks is designed and synthesized. DESVS unique properties are supported by density functional theory computed electronic structures, single crystal structures, and experimental lattice cohesion metrics. Based on this building block, a new class of stable, structurally planar, and solution-processable conjugated polymers are synthesized and implemented in organic thin-film transistors (TFT) and organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. DESVS-based polymers exhibit carrier mobilities in air as high as 1.49 cm2 V-1 s-1 (p-type) and 0.65 cm2 V-1 s-1 (n-type) in TFTs, and power conversion efficiency >5% in OPV cells.

ABSTRACT

Tamoxifen citrate, as the first line of treatment for infertile men with idiopathic oligozoospermia, was proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and testosterone undecanoate has shown benefits in semen values. Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of treatment with tamoxifen citrate and testosterone undecanoate in infertile men with idiopathic oligozoospermia, and whether the results would be affected by polymorphisms of CYP2D6*10. A total of 230 infertile men and 147 controls were included in the study. Patients were treated with tamoxifen citrate and testosterone undecanoate. Sex hormone, sperm parameters, and incidence of spontaneous pregnancy were detected. There were no significant differences between the control and patient groups with respect to CYP2D6*10 genotype frequencies (P>0.05). The follicle-stimulation hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and testosterone (T) levels were raised, and sperm concentration and motility were increased at 3 months and became significant at 6 months, and they were higher in the wild-type allele (C/C) than in the heterozygous variant allele (C/T) or homozygous variant allele (T/T) subgroups (P<0.05). In addition, the percentage of normal morphology was raised at 6 months, and represented the highest percentage in the C/C subgroup (P<0.05). The incidence of spontaneous pregnancy in the C/C subgroup was higher than that in the C/T or T/T subgroups (P<0.01). This study showed that the CYP2D6*10 variant genotype demonstrated worse clinical effects in infertile men with idiopathic oligozoospermia.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of various intracranial cystic lesions is sometimes difficult on the basis of CT or MRI findings. Our objective was to evaluate (1)H MRS and DWI in the differential diagnosis of these lesions and in comparison with conventional MRI. METHODS: Fifty patients with intracranial cystic lesions (21 pyogenic abscesses, 23 tumor cysts, 3 epidermoid cysts, and 3 arachnoid cysts) were evaluated with conventional MRI, DWI, and in vivo (1)H MRS. Preoperative diagnosis of the lesions was based on the results of DWI and in vivo MRS. All DWI and (1)H MRS studies were performed with a clinical 1.5-T system. The DWI was performed using single-shot spin-echo echo-planar pulse sequence with b = 1000 s/mm(2). The ADC value was measured. Diagnostic accuracy of conventional MRI, DWI, and in vivo (1)H MRS was calculated with respect to a final diagnosis of brain abscess vs nonabscess cystic tumor. RESULTS: Lactate and cytosolic amino acids with/without succinate, acetate, and alanine were observed in 18 of 21 cases of abscesses on MRS. In 3 cases of epidermoid cysts, lactate was observed and could be differentiated from 3 cases of arachnoid cysts, which showed only minimal lactate. Only lactate was seen in 14 of 23 patients with tumor cysts, whereas both lipid/lactate and choline were visible in 9 patients with tumor cysts. Increased signal was seen in 20 of 21 patients with abscesses and 3 patients with epidermoid cysts on DWI. Decreased signal was observed in 22 of 23 patients with tumor cysts and 3 patients with arachnoid cyst on DWI. Diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of conventional MRI for the differentiation of brain abscess from nonabscess cystic tumor were 61.4%, 61.9%, 60.9%, 59.1%, and 63.6%, respectively, whereas they were 93.2%, 85.7%, 100%, 100%, and 88.5% with MRS; 95.5%, 95.2%, 95.7%, 95.2%, and 95.7% with DWI; and 97.7%, 95.2%, 100%, 100%, and 95.8% with MRS and DWI. Magnetic resonance imaging, when combined with in vivo MRS and DWI, accurately predicted the diagnosis in 47 (94%) of 50 and 48 (96%) of 50 of the cases, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Proton MRS and DWI are useful as additional diagnostic modalities in differentiating intracranial cystic lesions. Combination of DWI with calculated ADC values and metabolite spectrum acquired by MRS add more information to MRI in the differentiation of intracranial cystic mass lesions.

ABSTRACT

To look for new MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) contrast agents with higher relaxivity as well as liver-selecsivity, four novel ester-amino ligands were synthesized by bis-acylation of octadecanyl, hexadecanyl, tetradecanyl and dedecanyl L-lysine with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid mono-anhydride (DTPA-MA), respectively. The corresponding dimeric Gd(III) complexes were gained by the reaction of these ligands with GdCl3 x 6H2O. All ligands and complexes were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and elemental analysis. The longitudinal relaxation time (T1) was measured, and relevant longitudinal relaxivity (R1) of these neatral binuclear Gd(III) complexes is: 6.48, 6.02, 5.76 and 5.68 L x mmol(-1) x s(-1), respectively, and all are higher than that of Gd-DTPA (4.98 L x mmol(-1) x s(-1)) (300 MHz).

Brain abscesses and brain tumors may have similar clinical presentations. For example, only 50% brain abscess patients have fever, which could be masked by corticosteroid therapy. Also, the differential diagnosis of brain abscesses versus cystic or necrotic tumors may be difficult based on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings. However, the strategies of management for abscess and neoplasm are very different, and it is especially imperative to have a correct diagnosis before any surgical intervention of cystic brain lesions. The MR special techniques, e.g. diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and proton (1H) MR spectroscopy, are useful as additional diagnostic modalities for differentiating brain abscesses from cystic or necrotic brain tumors. DWI shows high signal intensity in most cases of pyogenic abscesses and low signal intensity in most cases of cystic or necrotic tumors. MR spectroscopy shows characteristic metabolites in pyogenic abscesses, distinct from those in cystic or necrotic tumors.
