ABSTRACT

This longitudinal study aimed to identify the role of psychosocial factors affecting smartphone addiction (SA) among Korean adolescents and predict the trajectory of SA based on the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2018 to 2020. The dependent variable is SA score as measured by the Korean Smartphone Addiction Propensity Scale (SAPS), and the independent variables are psychosocial factors (attention, grit, life satisfaction, self-esteem, aggression, depression, social withdrawal and physical symptom). Generalized estimating equation (GEE) analysis (adjusted for covariates) results indicated that attention (B = -0.346, P < .001), grit (B = -0.402, P < .001), life satisfaction (B = -0.150, P < .001), and self-esteem (B = -0.099, P < .001) were protective factors for reducing SA score. Conversely, aggression (B = 0.222, P < .001) and depression (B = 0.067, P = .005) were predicted to be risk factors for increasing SA score. A better understanding of the relationship between behavioral addiction and psychosocial development factors in adolescence will assist in the development of more effective prevention and treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine whether serum uric acid (SUA) levels are associated with various indices of liver damage in the adult Korean population. METHODS: We used the Seventh (VII) Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys. Our study population comprised 6,007 men and 8,488 women. Levels of SUA were divided into four groups (≤ 5.3, 5.3-6.0, 6.0-7.0, and > 7.0 mg/dL for men and ≤ 4.0, 4.0-4.8, 4.8-6.0, and > 6.0 mg/dL for women). Elevated liver enzyme levels were defined as > 35 (men) and > 31 (women) IU/L for aspartate aminotransferase (AST), > 45 (men) and > 34 (women) IU/L for alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Hepatic steatosis index and fibrosis (FIB)-4 index was used to determine nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver FIB, respectively. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were calculated by logistic regression analysis for liver enzymes, NAFLD, and liver FIB, according to the SUA level. RESULTS: Among women, the 4.8-6.0 and > 6.0 mg/dL SUA groups showed higher ORs of elevated AST (aOR, 1.78 and 2.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.37-2.32 and 1.40-2.96, respectively; P < 0.001) and the 4.0-4.8, 4.8-6.0, and > 6.0 mg/dL SUA groups showed a higher ORs of ALT elevation (aOR, 1.35, 2.26, and 2.37; 95% CI, 1.02-1.79, 1.72-2.97, and 1.60-3.50, respectively; P < 0.001) compared to the lowest level SUA group. Among women with normal ALT, > 6.0 mg/dL SUA group showed higher OR of NAFLD status (aOR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.06-2.19). Among men and women with NAFLD, hyperuricemia showed higher ORs of liver FIB (aOR, 2.25 and 1.89; 95% CI, 1.21-4.19 and 1.09-3.27, respectively) than the lowest level SUA group. CONCLUSION: High SUA levels may be associated with elevated liver enzymes and NAFLD, mainly in women. Even in women with normal ALT levels, SUA levels may predict the NAFLD status. Hyperuricemia may predict advanced liver FIB in both men and women with NAFLD. Further studies investigating the causal effects of SUA on liver damage are required.

ABSTRACT

Cataracts and major depressive disorder (MDD) both have high prevalence, representing for major health burdens globally. In this study, we examined the risk of MDD due to cataracts. Data from the 2016 to 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used, including 4122 participants. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the odds ratio for MDD in association with cataracts. Controlled variables were age, gender, smoking, dyslipidemia and mobility. Subgroup analysis was performed with stratification by gender. The results reveal that cataracts are significantly correlated with MDD. Elderly people with cataracts were found to be more likely to develop MDD compared to those without cataracts (adjusted odds ratio: 1.654; 95% CI = 1.197-2.286). In subgroup analysis, men (adjusted odds ratio: 2.631; 95% CI = 1.247-5.551) were found to be more likely to develop MDD than women (adjusted odds ratio: 1.510; 95% CI = 1.061-2.150). Cataracts may be a risk factor for MDD in the elderly, especially among the male population.

ABSTRACT

This cross-sectional study sought to evaluate the association between insufficient sleep and bad breath among Korean adolescent population. It was based on the 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (2017). From 64,991 participants (aged 13-18 years), the final participation rate in the survey was 95.8% (62,276 participants; 31,624 boys and 30,652 girls). A complex sample logistic regression was performed to identify the relationship between insufficient sleep and halitosis, after adjusting for all covariates. In Model II for estimating the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for general characteristics, students who answered "not at all sufficient", indicating insufficient sleep, were at higher risk of bad breath than those who answered "completely sufficient" (AOR = 2.09, 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.91-2.30). In Model III, for estimating the AOR adjusted for all covariates, students who answered "not at all sufficient", indicating insufficient sleep, were at higher risk of bad breath than those who answered "completely sufficient" (AOR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.33-1.83). It is necessary for families and schools to have health education lessons that recognize insufficient sleep among adolescents may be a cause of bad breath and therefore optimal sleeping habits and oral health behaviors should be promoted.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between oral discomfort and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the Korean elderly, using the datasets provided by the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KHNANES) over 6 consecutive years (2010-2015). A total of 13,618 participants aged 65 years and over were included in the final analysis. A complex sample logistic regression was performed to determine the impact of oral discomfort on HRQOL. The results revealed that toothache, masticatory discomfort, and pronunciation problems caused by oral health conditions were all risk factors for decreased HRQOL. In particular, masticatory discomfort (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.63, Model III (adjusted for all covariates)) and pronunciation problems (AOR 1.64, Model III) negatively impacted the HRQOL of the elderly to a great extent. Masticatory discomfort had a stronger negative impact on HRQOL in the domains of "self-care" (AOR 1.83) and "usual activities" (AOR 1.66), while pronunciation problems had a similar impact on all five domains of the EuroQol 5-Dimension (EQ-5D). These findings could serve as baseline data for setting up early intervention programs for the timely prevention of oral health-related discomfort problems that greatly affect the QOL of the elderly population, and for the development of comprehensive and efficient dental insurance policies.

ABSTRACT

We examined the relationship between Problematic Internet Use (PIU), sleep (sleep satisfaction, sleep duration), and experience of oral disease symptoms in Korean adolescents by gender. This cross-sectional study utilized the 6th (2010) Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Participants comprised 74,980 students from 400 middle schools and 400 high schools nationwide. Among these, 73,238 students from 799 schools (38,391 boys, 34,847 girls, aged 13⁻18 years) were included in the analysis (inclusion rate = 97.7%). Multiple logistic regression and analysis of moment structures (AMOS) analyses were performed to identify meaningful relationships between the three factors. The "high risk group" of problematic internet usage had increased experience of oral disease symptoms (boys: adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.63⁻2.28, girls: AOR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.50⁻2.63) compared to the general group. Boys who used the Internet for "5⁻6 h" had a higher risk of oral disease symptoms compared to those who used it for "less than 1 h" (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.01⁻1.53); however, this difference was not significant in Models II and III. For girls, the risk of 5⁻6 h of use (Model I: OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.40⁻2.04) was higher than that of the boys. In addition, the difference was significant in Models II and III for girl students who used the Internet for 5⁻6 h. In subgroup analysis, the high-risk group had a higher odds ratio for mild symptoms of bad breath to severe symptoms such as sore and bleeding gums. In addition, in the path analysis, PIU affected sleep and indirectly affected oral health. Direct and indirect causal relationships between the three factors were confirmed. Therefore, it is important to recognize that PIU can have a detrimental effect on mental, physical, and oral health.
