ABSTRACT

A Spanish-speaking mother reported for child abuse of her 6-yr-old son and referred by child protective services received Spanish training protocols in their home provided by Project SafeCare. Treatment consisted of (1) child health care training, (2) planned activities training (PAT), and (3) home safety training. Following training, the mother met criterion in all training components. Although PAT was conducted with the mother and her youngest child only, the mother reported decreases in negative interactions between the oldest (untreated) child and his parents. Follow-up observations indicated that treatment gains were maintained. The mother rated the content and outcome of the training favorably on a social validation questionnaire.

ABSTRACT

Controlled studies of treatments effective with victims of natural disasters are almost nonexistent. This is a small study conducted under difficult conditions to test the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in treating trauma related reactions following Hurricane Andrew. The results were positive in that EMDR produced significant improvement over wait list controls in perceived posttraumatic avoidance behaviors and thoughts as measured by changes in the Impact of Event Scale and significant improvement in subjective aversive reactions to representative experiences of the hurricane. These results suggest and support other studies that EMDR can be an effective therapeutic intervention for trauma reactions.

ABSTRACT

A multidimensional questionnaire was administered to staff members at three residential facilities for retarded persons to determine their attitudes toward the actual and potential sexual behavior of retarded persons. The questionnaire covered the areas of masturbation and heterosexual and homosexual behavior. Dimensions were scaled to reflect progressively more intimate behavior so that acceptability of each response along the dimensions could be assessed. A mean of 31.2 percent of those questioned felt that no sexual behavior, not even simple physical contact, was acceptable for retarded persons. This indicates that sex-education programs for retarded persons may be met with resistance by a substantial percentage of staff. Among those staff members who found it acceptable for retarded people to engage in sexual behavior, peak acceptability occurred for heterosexual behavior. Sexual behavior in public, especially public masturbation, was considered a significant problem. More specific effects were identified, and the implications of these results for educational programs and the development of intervention procedures were discussed.
