ABSTRACT

Although it is known that organophosphate insecticides are harmfull to aquatic ecosystems, oxidative damages caused by Dimethoate and Chlorpyrifos are not studied on Arthrospira platensis Gomont. In this study, various Chlorpyrifos (0-150 µg mL-1) and Dimethoate (0-250 µg mL-1) concentrations were added to the culture medium in laboratory to evaulate growth rate, chlorophyll-a content and antioxidant parameters of A. platensis. Optical Density (OD560) and chlorophyll-a decreased compared to the control for seven days in both pesticide applications. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased at 50 µg mL-1 Chlorpyrifos concentration but it decreased at all concentrations. Although Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities increased with Chlorpyrifos application, they did not change with Dimethoate application. Malondialdehyde (MDA) amount decreased at 150 µg mL-1 Chlorpyrifos concentration but it increased in Dimethoate application. The H2O2 content were increased in both applications. Proline decreased in 50 and 75 µg mL-1 Chlorpyrifos concentrations and increased at 150 µg mL-1 concentration, while it increased at 25 µg mL-1 Dimethoate concentration. The results were tested at 0.05 significance level. These pesticides inhibit A. platensis growth and chlorophyll-a production and cause oxidative stress. The excessive use may affect the phytoplankton and have negative consequences in the aquatic ecosystem.

ABSTRACT

The lack of medical databases is currently the main barrier to the development of artificial intelligence-based algorithms in medicine. This issue can be partially resolved by developing a reliable high-quality synthetic database. In this study, an easy and reliable method for developing a synthetic medical database based only on statistical data is proposed. This method changes the primary database developed based on statistical data using a special shuffle algorithm to achieve a satisfactory result and evaluates the resulting dataset using a neural network. Using the proposed method, a database was developed to predict the risk of developing type 2 diabetes 5 years in advance. This dataset consisted of data from 172,290 patients. The prediction accuracy reached 94.45% during neural network training of the dataset.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a water-soluble metal-free phthalocyanine (SPC) containing sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate substituents at the peripheral positions was used to investigate the algaecidal properties and oxidative effects on the growth of two microalgal species, Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris. Although OD at 560 nm and chlorophyll-a content were decreased in Arthrospira platensis during 7 days depending on dose and time, increases in both OD at 750 and chlorophyll-a content at 8 ppb (parts per billion) concentration on the 7th day were observed in Chlorella vulgaris. However, total SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GR (glutathione reductase) enzyme activity of A. platensis cultures did not display any alteration in all concentrations, SOD activity displayed an increase significantly at 2 ppb concentration, and GR activity showed increases at 1, 2, and 4 ppb concentrations in C. vulgaris application. In A. platensis application, APX (ascorbate peroxidase) activity decreased at 0.50 ppb, 1 ppb, and 1.5 ppb concentrations. In addition, C. vulgaris application showed decreases at all concentrations. When MDA content increased at all concentrations, the H2O2 content increased only at significatly 0.125 ppb concentration in A. platensis cultures. Both MDA (malondialdehyde) and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) content of C. vulgaris cultures showed a statistically significant decrease at all concentrations compared to control. Free proline decreased at 0.25 ppb, 0.50 ppb, 1 ppb, and 1.5 ppb concentrations in A. platensis application, and it decreased at all the concentrations of C. vulgaris application. It concluded that this compound has inhibition effects on A. platensis, but it supports growth in C. vulgaris. Therefore, this synthesized phthalocyanine compound (SPC) should be consumed carefully, and the contamination to aquatic ecosystems should be prevented.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the routine blood parameters of COVID-19 patients at the time of admission to the emergency department and their relationship with the severity of the disease and prognosis. A total of 500 patients, who were diagnosed with severe COVID-19 and hospitalized in the intensive care unit between 01.04.2020 and 01.02.2021 in the emergency department of a pandemic hospital, were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of the patients were obtained from the hospital registry system. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were calculated using neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and platelet counts. These patients were divided into two groups: survivors and deceased. All parameters obtained from routine blood analysis were statistically compared between these two groups. While 280 out of 500 patients survived, 220 died. Of all patients, the mean age was 67 years and 51.8% were males. There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of age, gender, length of hospital stay, need for mechanical ventilation, white blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, platelet counts, CRP, ferritin, procalcitonin values, NLR, MLR, and PLR (p < 0.001 for all). While NLR alone and MLR + NEU and NLR + PLR + MLR combinations had the highest AUC values (0.930, 0.947, and 0.939, respectively), MLR and PLR alone showed the lowest AUC values (0.875 and 0.797, respectively). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values (PPVs), and negative predictive values (NPVs) in the prediction of death according to the cutoff values of the parameters have been determined. A significant correlation was determined between age, NLR, MLR, and PLR and duration of hospital stay (p < 0.001 for all). Routine blood parameters and NLR, MLR, and PLR can assist emergency physicians to identify the severity and early prognosis of COVID-19 patients.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, many deep models have been presented to recognize emotions using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. These deep models are computationally intensive, it takes a longer time to train the model. Also, it is difficult to achieve high classification performance using for emotion classification using machine learning techniques. To overcome these limitations, we present a hand-crafted conventional EEG emotion classification network. In this work, we have used novel prime pattern and tunable q-factor wavelet transform (TQWT) techniques to develop an automated model to classify human emotions. Our proposed cognitive model comprises feature extraction, feature selection, and classification steps. We have used TQWT on the EEG signals to obtain the sub-bands. The prime pattern and statistical feature generator are employed on the generated sub-bands and original signal to generate 798 features. 399 (half of them) out of 798 features are selected using minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) selector, and misclassification rates of each signal are evaluated using support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The proposed network generated 87 feature vectors hence, this model is named PrimePatNet87. In the last step of the feature generation, the best 20 feature vectors which are selected based on the calculated misclassification rates, are concatenated. The generated feature vector is subjected to the feature selection and the most significant 1000 features are selected using the mRMR selector. These selected features are then classified using an SVM classifier. In the last phase, iterative majority voting has been used to generate a general result. We have used three publicly available datasets, namely DEAP, DREAMER, and GAMEEMO, to develop our proposed model. Our presented PrimePatNet87 model reached over 99% classification accuracy on whole datasets with leave one subject out (LOSO) validation. Our results demonstrate that the developed prime pattern network is accurate and ready for real-world applications.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the chemical and algicidal properties of the newly synthesized compound (2) were evaluated and its algal oxidative effects were determined in Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris. First, we have reported on the synthesis and characterization of highly water-soluble copper (II) phthalocyanine (2), containing sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (2) substituents at the peripheral positions. Some spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize the new synthesized compound (2). In terms of biological properties, C. vulgaris were more tolerance to compound (2) than A. platensis depending to growth parameters. When SOD (Superoxide dismutase) activity significantly increased at 0.25 ppb and 1.5 ppb concentrations in A. platensis cultures, it increased at 6 ppb concentration in C. vulgaris cultures. GR (Glutathione reductase) activity decreased at 1 ppb and 1.5 ppb concentrations while APX (Ascorbate peroxidase) activity did not show a significant change at any concentrations in A. platensis cultures. GR activity showed a significant increase at 6 ppb concentration, while APX activity increased at all concentrations compared to control in C. vulgaris cultures. MDA (malondialdehyde) and H2O2 content decreased at 1 and 1.5 ppb concentrations but there were significant increases in the proline content at all concentrations compared to the control in A. platensis. MDA, H2O2 and free proline contents showed a significant increase at 0.5 ppb concentration in C. vulgaris. In conclusion, compound (2) have algicidal effects, and also it causes to oxidative stress in these organisms.

ABSTRACT

MAIN CONCLUSION: The main reason for the maize genotype "DKC7221" to be heat tolerant is to have higher photosynthetic activity under heat stress conditions. The genotype "P3167" is sensitive to high temperature because of the heat-induced inhibition in photosynthetic electron transport reactions. In the present study, the effect of heat stress (45 ºC for 20 min) on some physiological changes was investigated through a chlorophyll afluorescence technique, and some endogenous resistance mechanisms (activities of some antioxidant enzymes, free proline, and reduced ascorbate contents) in two maize cultivars (Zea mays L. cvs. P3167 and DKC7221). Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements demonstrated that heat stress led to the reduction in the efficiency of the Hill reaction, accumulation of inactive reaction centers, inhibition of electron flow from reaction centers to the plastoquinone pool, and induction of non-photochemical dissipation of absorbed light energy. Changes in Φo/(1 - Φo), SFIABS and PIABS indicated that electron transport reactions in P3167 were almost completely inhibited by heat stress. In DKC7221, however, photosynthetic electron transport reactions were maintained under heat stress conditions. As a result of impairment in the photosynthetic efficiency in P3167 under heat stress, oxidative stress appeared as shown by lower antioxidant activity, accumulation of H2O2, malondialdehyde, and formazon and photooxidative injuries in chlorophyll pigments in the leaf tissue. DKC7221, on the other hand, had a higher antioxidant efficiency and lower oxidative damage under heat stress. FeSOD activity was found to be responsible for the dismutation of superoxide radicals in both maize genotypes under heat stress. As a result, it may be concluded that the genotype DKC7221 is more tolerant to heat stress than P3167.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the association between the red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), Canadian Neurological Scale (CNS), and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores in patients who had acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included 88 patients who have had acute ischemic stroke and a control group of 40 patients who were evaluated in the Emergency Department for disorders other than acute ischemic stroke. All subjects had RDW determined, and stroke patients had scoring with the GCS, CNS, and NIHSS scores. The GCS, CNS, and NIHSS scores of the patients were rated as mild, moderate, or severe and compared with RDW. RESULTS: Stroke patients had significantly higher median RDW than control subjects. The median RDW values were significantly elevated in patients who had more severe rather than milder strokes rated with all three scoring systems (GCS, CNS, and NIHSS). The median RDW values were significantly elevated for patients who had moderate rather than mild strokes rated by GCS and CNS and for patients who had severe rather than mild strokes rated by NIHSS. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.760 (95% confidence interval, 0.676-0.844). Separation of stroke patients and control groups was optimal with RDW 14% (sensitivity, 71.6%; specificity, 67.5%; accuracy, 70.3%). CONCLUSION: In stroke patients who have symptoms <24 hours, the RDW may be useful in predicting the severity and functional outcomes of the stroke.

ABSTRACT

Utilization of the hamstring tendon in reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has become common in recent years. In MRI studies regeneration potential in harvested tendon has been observed. In the present study, 20 legs from ten sheep, which underwent 10 cm segment resection of tendon of musculus extensor digitalis lateralis (MEDL) were used. The sheep were killed 6 months after the operation and regenerated tendons were examined macroscopically and histologically. Dissection was performed in the tendon resection area and specimens were reharvested for histological examination. Regeneration of the tendon with normal anatomical topographies was found in all legs. Regeneration occurred on both sides of the resected tendon simultaneously. Regeneration was muscle-like in the proximal side but it was tendon-like in the distal side. The developed tendon was fused to the joint capsule and to the fascia at the joint line in all specimens. This study indicates that tendon has a potential for regeneration.
