ABSTRACT

A sample of 54 climacteric women (mean age 48.1 years) being treated for premenopausal bleeding was assessed. The mean serum prolactin value was 23.04 ng/ml. A separate group of 28 hyperprolactinaemic patients showing a mean level of 34.43 mg/ml was compared. No abnormalities of the sella turcica at skull X-ray examination were disclosed. Predominant anovulatory bleeding was found in the endometrial tissue specimens obtained by curettage. The mean serum prolactin level of the climacteric women was significantly increased in comparison with that of 35 healthy women with normal menstrual cycle (P < 0.001). An influence of age on serum prolactin levels in women was found (r = 0.406). Similar results were not reported until now, although this study does not help to explain exactly the role of elevated prolactin level in climacteric impairment of ovarian function.

ABSTRACT

Pregnancy, aggravated by hyperprolactinaemic empty sella syndrome, is a risky and rare event. A case with such complication and continuous bromocriptine treatment during the whole gestation is presented. Neither fetal abnormalities nor deterioration of maternal pituitary pathology or the course of gestation are observed.

ABSTRACT

A patient with tertiary hypogonadotropic hypogonadism was followed up for many years. On the basis of this observation the possibilities for a correct diagnosis with the gonadoliberin test are pointed out. A positive effect of the treatment with gonadotropic hormones, especially on the spermatogenesis, is established. Several other new therapeutic means which can be applied in these patients are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Histochemical study of estradiol in the guinea pig ovary using RIA antiserum revealed specific estradiol fluorescence in theca interna cells and in single cells of atretic follicles. The fluorescence intensity was highest in the estrus phase.

ABSTRACT

Specialized sensory perception was examined in 20 women with polycystic ovary syndrome and in 20 healthy women with normal ovulatory genital cycle. None of the healthy women disclosed any anomaly in sensory perception while with no exception all patients with polycystic ovary syndrome disclosed anomalies in sensory perception of one or other sensory analyzer. Defects in smell (hypoosmis) were more common (19 cases) than those of taste (hypogeusia) (II cases), of vestibular (14 cases) or auditory (3 cases) function, although defects in two or more analyzers occurred together in most of the cases. The association of the syndrome with anomalies in the sensory perception suggested that various central nervous structures beside these controlling the releasing factors are involved in the pathomechanism of the disease and that specialized sensory perception in man has much more to do with the neuroendocrine system than previously believed.

ABSTRACT

FSH and LH responses to LH--RH stimulation were investigated at 0,3rd and 6th hrs in a six hours exogenous intravenous administration of 300 mg conjugated estrogens before ovarian cuneiformic resection and on the 10th day thereafter in seven patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Before operation exogenous pituitary LH--RH stimulation following estrogen administration increased the serum FSH concentrations and response, and decreased LH concentrations and response, while after operation a slight increase of FSH response with a concomitant excessive LH response was observed. A dual action of estrogens in modifying the pituitary gonadotrophins, as well as hypothalamic LH--RH release was supposed.

ABSTRACT

FSH and LH levels as well as the ratio of LH to FSH before and after wedge resection were checked in 25 women with polycystic ovaries in connection with histomorphology. The probands were subdivided histomorphologically by the following three groups: 1. diffuse hyperplasia and luteinized theca interna; 2. foci of hyperplastic and luteinized stroma cells; 2. various corpus luteum-formations. A correlation was found to exist between gonadotropin levels in serum and histomorphological changes. FSH levels, for example, were much lower in the third group, while postoperative LH levels remained to be higher in cases of more strongly pronounced follicular and stromal luteinisation and more strongly manifest changes in corpus luteum-formations.

ABSTRACT

Serum LH and FSH concentrations were examined by radioimmunoassay in 41 women with polycystic ovary syndrome before and after ovarian wedge resection. Serum LH level was nearly threefold that of normal control patients, while that of FSH was decreased. Serum LH value decreased. Serum LH value decreased significantly after ovarian wedge resection, but remained elevated in comparison to that of healthy women. Serum FSH concentration increased after operation to normal values. LH : FSH ratio of polycystic ovary patients was elevated in comparison to that of normal patients. After ovarian wedge resection it decreased significantly, but remained twofold that of normal healthy women. The alterations in gonadotropin secretion were related to the alterations in the steroid milieu and feedback.

ABSTRACT

Four patients with primary amenorrhoea associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome were investigated clinically, radiologically, endocrinologically and histologically. The values of FSH and LH were determined in basal conditions, as well as after 100 micrograms of LHRH. The levels of TSH and prolactin were studied before and after TRH stimulation in doses of 200 micrograms. An increase in the basal levels of FSH was established with different responses of the hormone to the LHRH test in the four patients. The values of LH were in the upper normal limits, and the responses of the hormone to the LHRH test were similar to those defined for FSH. The basal levels and the response of TSH and prolactin to TRH were within the norm, with the exception of the first patients, in whom the response of prolactin to TRH stimulation was significantly diminished. The authors discuss the pathogenesis of the disease in connection with the data obtained.

ABSTRACT

Serum gastrin I (GLU-GLY-PRO-TRYP-LEU(GLU)6-ALA-[formula, see text]-GLY-TRY-MET-ASP-PHE-CO-NH2) concentrations were investigated by radioimmunoassay in 50 mothers and their newborn infants immediately after birth. The mean serum gastrin concentration in maternal blood was 52.80 +/- 13.37 (SD) pg/ml, and in cord blood 84.12 +/- 42.90 (SD) pg/ml. Both values were significantly higher than serum gastrin levels found in normal, healthy, nonpregnant women (Mean +/- SD = 32.34 +/- 18.35 pg/ml). There were no statistically significant differences in the cord serum gastrin concentrations with respect to sex, weight and length of the infant and age and parity of the mother.

ABSTRACT

Described in this paper is a case of an incomplete form of testicular feminisation associated with asymmetrically impaired sensitivity to androgens. More strongly pronounced hair coverage was recordable from the entire left half of body and face. The breast was underdeveloped on the right. The genesis of the above deviations is discussed.
