The effects of intramyometrially injected PGF2 alpha intravenous Ergometrin and no treatment were compared during 3rd stage labor in 140 patients. In comparison with Ergometrin or no treatment, PGF2 alpha significantly reduced the duration of 3rd stage labor, blood loss, incidence of subinvolution and subfebrility.

Planimetry has been used to analyse the tocographic tracings recorded from 29 deliveries induced by means of prostaglandin F 2 alpha as well as those recorded from 28 deliveries induced by means of oxytocin. The contraction-causing effect of prostaglandin was found to be milder than that of oxytocin. Prostaglandin F 2 alpha, consequently, proved to be superior to oxytocin in handling placental insufficiency.

Six human uterine tube were studied by scanning-and transmission electron microscopy. Ciliated epithelium and epithelium covered by microvilli could be identified by both method. In the area of the fimbriae the majority of cells appeared to be ciliated epithelium, but near to the uterus their number decreased. At every part of the uterine tube cells of the ciliated epithelium were situated deeper than cells covered by microvilli. In the age group studied (20-45 year) no age-dependent differences in the structure of the mucosa or in the number of the different cells could be revealed.

The authors investigated the effectiveness of prostaglandin F2alpha administered by intravenous drop infusion to induce labour. They compared their results with those obtained in oxytocin-induced labour. They determined that prostaglandin F2alpha can without any danger be administered in the induction of labour. The process of labour and the ensuing results indicate that prostaglandin is less of a burden to the uteroplacental circulation. In administering either of the two drugs, the authors deem the principle of applying the "smallest" dose important.
