ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Black women's experiences of gendered racism have implications for their mental health. The present study tested the associations between gendered racism, social support, and depression, then investigated whether gendered racial centrality buffered the impact of gendered racism on mental health outcomes. METHOD: Data from 237 Black college women (Mage = 22.04, SD = 4.02 years) were collected using an online survey, assessing gendered racism, social support, depression, and gendered racial identity. RESULTS: We found that social support mediated (but did not moderate) the association between gendered racism and depression: More gendered racism was associated with decreased support, and consequently more depression. Also, higher gendered racial centrality buffered the indirect effect of gendered racism on greater depression via lower social support. CONCLUSION: Our results further illustrate the detrimental effect of gendered racism on Black women, while also illuminating areas for intervention useful for this group. ABSTRACT

How do psychotherapy supervisors most effectively integrate issues and concerns about multiculturalism and social justice (MSJ) into the supervisory experience? Concrete examples of how to best address this integration are needed, and this article provides one such example. The authors propose multicultural streaming as one approach to orient supervisees about, and prepare them for, incorporation of MSJ matters into group supervision and to foster their evolving sense of culturally humble practice. This article defines multicultural streaming, presents a plan for its implementation at the group's outset, and identifies implementation guideposts for consideration. A set of cultural humility guidelines adapted for group supervision is also proposed for group facilitation. This perspective is presented with the hope of generating further discussion about integrating MSJ issues into the group supervisory experience.

ABSTRACT

Although substantial research has examined the effects of stress on cognition, much of this research has focused on acute stress (e.g. manipulated in the laboratory) or chronic stress (e.g. persistent interpersonal or financial difficulties). In contrast, the effects of recent life stress on cognition have been relatively understudied. To address this issue, we examined how recent life stress is associated with long-term, working memory, and self-reported memory in a sample of 142 healthy young adults who were assessed at two time points over a two-week period. Recent life stress was measured using the newly-developed Stress and Adversity Inventory for Daily Stress (Daily STRAIN), which assesses the frequency of relatively common stressful life events and difficulties over the preceding two weeks. To assess memory performance, participants completed both long-term and working memory tasks. Participants also provided self-reports of memory problems. As hypothesized, greater recent life stress exposure was associated with worse performance on measures of long-term and working memory, as well as more self-reported memory problems. These associations were largely robust while controlling for possible confounds, including participants' age, sex, and negative affect. The findings indicate that recent life stress exposure is broadly associated with worse memory. Future studies should thus consider assessing recent life stress as a potential predictor, moderator, or covariate of memory performance.
