ABSTRACT

In this study, we examined the effects of an aluminization process on the microstructure and texture of Haynes 282 nickel samples fabricated using the direct metal laser sintering technique. The aluminization process involved the use of chemical vapor deposition with AlCl3 vapors in a hydrogen atmosphere at a temperature of 1040 °C for 8 h. Following the 3D printing and aluminization steps, we analyzed the microstructure of the Haynes 282 nickel alloy samples using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, we investigated the texture using X-ray diffractometry. A texture analysis revealed that after the process of direct laser sintering of metals, the texture of the Haynes 282 nickel alloy samples developed a texture typical of cast materials. Then, in the aluminization process, the texture was transformed-from foundry-type components to a texture characteristic of recrystallization.

ABSTRACT

In the article, the new concept of plasma-sprayed coatings for the cylinder liner was presented. The new type of powder containing WC-CrC-Ni with a 5 and 10 wt. % addition of nano-YSZ powder was plasma-sprayed on aluminum 2017 alloy samples. The selection of optimal plasma-spraying parameters was made taking into account the thickness, porosity, and hardness of the coatings. For the coatings obtained according to the developed parameters, the analysis of their microstructure, chemical, and phase composition was performed. At the next stage, the friction coefficient of the developed coatings was tested and compared with the properties of a classic cast-iron cylinder liner. The obtained results suggest that the developed type of coating might be used for cylinder liner applications after a deeper friction analysis.

ABSTRACT

Ytterbium zirconate (Yb2Zr2O7) is one of the most promising materials for yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) replacement as a thermal barrier coating (TBCs) application. In the presented report, the experimental synthesis of Yb2Zr2O7 coating using novel Reactive Plasma Spray Physical Vapor Deposition (Reactive PS-PVD) is described. The obtained coating, irrespective of the power current (1800, 2000 and 2200 A), was characterized by a hybrid structure and a thickness of about 80-110 µm. The results of XRD phase analysis showed the formation of ytterbium zirconate in the coating but the presence of ytterbium and zirconium oxides was also detected. The oxides were not observed in calcinated powder. The decrease in thermal conductivity with power current increase was observed. It was the result of higher thickness and better columnar structure of the coating obtained using higher power current of the plasma torch.

ABSTRACT

The oxidation behavior of the nickel superalloy Inconel 740H was studied at 750 °C for 100, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 h in a steam atmosphere. Microstructure observations were performed using scanning electron microscopes and scanning-transmission electron microscope. The phase identification of existing oxidation products was conducted by electron diffraction in transmission electron microscope. The obtained results showed that the microstructure of Inconel 740H was stable during the oxidation process. The kinetic data showed that the superalloy has the ability to form protective oxide layers that are characterized by good adhesion and no tendency to spallation during the test. The oxidation products were mainly composed of external and internal oxides mainly at grain boundaries. The oxides in the external layer were Cr2O3, MnTiO3,, and α-Al2O3 after 2000 h of oxidation. Internal oxides were α-Al2O3 and TiO2. The occurrence of discontinuities in the internal oxidation zone was also observed after 500 h of test. It was found that the thickness of the internal oxidation zone was greater than the thickness of the external oxide layer, which proves the strong tendency of the superalloy to form internal oxides after oxidation in the steam atmosphere.
