ABSTRACT

Oxytocin is one of the most commonly used medications in obstetrics and has been associated with claims of negligence in cases of adverse outcomes. Errors involving intravenous oxytocin administration for induction or augmentation of labor are most commonly dose related and include failure to avoid or treat tachysystole or failure to asses or treat a fetal heart rate pattern indicative of disruption in oxygenation. Clinicians should be knowledgeable regarding pharmacokinetics of oxytocin and the effect of uterine contractions on fetal oxygenation as well as safe titration of oxytocin to achieve the desired effect while minimizing harm.

ABSTRACT

Parse scholar Dr. Constance Milton envisioned a nursing curriculum grounded in the humanbecoming school of thought (Parse, 1998). Flowing from that vision, the California Baptist University School of Nursing opened in 2006 with 40 undergraduate nursing students. Steeped in the humanbecoming paradigm (Parse, 1998, 2014), this school now flourishes with over 650 students in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Describing a nursing curriculum woven with Parse's theory of humanbecoming (1998, 2014), the authors provide examples of work from graduate nursing students in the first and last semesters of the pre-licensure program reflecting a unique paradigm guiding living the art of nursing.

ABSTRACT

Nurses are increasingly encountering pregnant/postpartum women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, of which preeclampsia is one of the most common. The Joint Commission published a Sentinel Event Alert in 2010 on prevention of maternal death. This report notes that one of the 5 leading causes of pregnancy-related mortality between 1991 and 1997 was "hypertensive disorder." Preeclampsia presents significant risk to the health of the mother and the fetus. Clearly, nurses must understand the pathophysiology, assessment, management, recurrence risk, and long-term implications of preeclampsia to participate fully in a management plan that promotes safe patient care.

ABSTRACT

California Baptist University School of Nursing opened in September 2006 as the first baccalaureate nursing education program in Riverside, California. Under the direction of Dr. Constance Milton, the curriculum was cocreated using Parse's humanbecoming school of thought as a framework. In August 2008, nursing students traveled to Rwanda where they bore witness to the transformation after the 1994 genocide. Dimensions and processes of Parse's practice methodology-illuminating meaning by explicating what is with languaging, synchronizing rhythms while dwelling with ups and downs in the struggle of connecting-separating, and mobilizing transcendence as moving beyond with the not-yet while transforming- emerged in the students' journaling as lived all-at-once amid reverence that honored the dignity and worth of the Rwandan people.

ABSTRACT

Partial molar pregnancy with coexisting fetus is a rare complication of pregnancy and carries significant risks to both the mother and the fetus. Maternal risks include abnormal bleeding and the development of preeclampsia. The fetus frequently develops abnormally, often due to abnormal karyotype. This case presents a woman with a partial molar pregnancy with coexisting fetus, including diagnosis, plan of care, and delivery information.
