ABSTRACT

Transition metal catalyzed C-H bond activation has become one of the most important tools for constructing new chemical bonds. Introducing directing groups to the substrates is the key to a successful reaction, these directing groups can also be further transformed in the reaction. Amidines with their unique structure and reactivity are ideal substrates for transition metal-catalyzed C-H transformations. This review describes the major advances and mechanistic investigations of the C-H activation/annulation tandem reactions of amidines until early 2024, focusing on metal-catalyzed C-H activation of amidines with unsaturated compounds, such as alkynes, ketone, vinylene carbonate, cyclopropanols and their derivatives. Meanwhile this manuscript also explores the reaction of amidines with different carbene precursors, for example diazo compounds, azide, triazoles, pyriodotriazoles, and sulfoxonium ylides as well as their own C-H bond activation/cyclization reactions. A bright outlook is provided at the end of the manuscript.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat, a traditional Chinese medicine, has the effects on liver clearing, vision improving, and anti-inflammation. C. morifolium and probiotics have been individually studied for their beneficial effects on metabolic diseases. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms were not completely elucidated. This study aims to elucidate the potential molecular mechanisms of C. morifolium and probiotics combination (CP) on alleviating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the dysregulation of glucose metabolism in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. METHODS: The therapeutic effect of CP on metabolism was evaluated by liver histology and serum biochemical analysis, as well as glucose tolerance test. The impact of CP on gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing and fecal microbiota transplantation. Hepatic transcriptomic analysis was performed with the key genes and proteins validated by RT-qPCR and western blotting. In addition, whole body Pparα knockout (Pparα-/-) mice were used to confirm the CP-mediated pathway. RESULTS: CP supplementation ameliorated metabolic disorders by reducing body weight and hepatic steatosis, and improving glucose intolerance and insulin resistance in HFD fed mice. CP intervention mitigated the HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, which contributed at least in part, to the beneficial effect of improving glucose metabolism. In addition, hepatic transcriptomic analysis showed that CP modulated the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism. CP downregulated the mRNA level of lipid droplet-binding proteins, such as Cidea and Cidec in the liver, leading to more substrates for fatty acid oxidation (FAO). Meanwhile, the expression of CPT1α, the rate-limiting enzyme of FAO, was significantly increased upon CP treatment. Mechanistically, though CP didn't affect the total PPARα level, it promoted the nuclear localization of PPARα, which contributed to the reduced expression of Cidea and Cidec, and increased expression of CPT1α, leading to activated FAO. Moreover, whole body PPARα deficiency abolished the anti-NAFLD effect of CP, suggesting the importance of PPARα in CP-mediated beneficial effect. CONCLUSION: This study revealed the hypoglycemic and hepatoprotective effect of CP by regulating gut microbiota composition and PPARα subcellular localization, highlighting its potential for therapeutic candidate for metabolic disorders.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy (T&A) in pediatric patients with prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and coagulation factor deficiency. Methods: A prospective study was admitted to the children undergoing T&A at our institution between October 2019 and January 2020, specifically focusing on preoperative coagulation function. Within this group, we identified 5 patients exhibiting prolonged APTT and coagulation factor deficiencies, constituting the experimental group, and 10 patients matched by gender and age with normal blood coagulation function were selected as the control group. Comparative analyses between the two groups were conducted, focusing on surgical duration, intraoperative bleeding volume, duration of hospital stay, and postoperative complications such as active bleeding across the groups. At the six-month postoperative mark, a reassessment of coagulation functions and factor assays was conducted within the experimental group. Results: No statistically significant differences were discovered in terms of surgical duration or bleeding volume when comparing the experimental subgroups with their respective control counterparts. Furthermore, there were no incidences of postoperative active bleeding observed in any of the groups. Notably, postoperative APTT values (32.7 ± 1.7s) exhibited a significant disparity compared to preoperative levels (43.7 ± 1.8s, p < 0.01). Coagulation factors demonstrated normalization, evidenced by a significant difference in postoperative Factor XII levels (40.2 ± 5.4%) compared to preoperative levels (63.1 ± 5.9%, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Prolonged APTT with FXII factor deficiency does not show a significant bleeding tendency and is not a contraindication for T&A surgery. Post T&A surgery, children with abnormal coagulation function and deficient clotting factors show significant improvement compared to pre-surgery. It is important to consider that chronic inflammation in adenoids and tonsils may contribute to the prolongation of APTT and the manifestation of Factor XII deficiency.

Objective: The objective of this study was to verify the clinical predictive performance of methylated cysteine dioxygenase type 1 (CDO1m) and CUGBP Elav-like family member 4 (CELF4m) in endometrial cancer (EC) women with postmenopausal bleeding (PMB). Material and Methods: A single-center, prospective, and case-control study was conducted in the Gansu Provincial Maternity and Child-care Hospital with 138 female postmenopausal patients enrolled in 2022. All patients underwent body mass index (BMI) detection, transvaginal ultrasonography (TVUS) detection, carbohydrate antigen 125 detection, and the cervical exfoliated cell CDO1/CELF4 gene methylation detection to analyze the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of different screening tests statistically with the biopsy and/or dilation and curettage (D&C) pathological diagnosis under hysteroscopy as the gold standard. Results: There was no significant difference in age between the EC group and the non-EC group, P = 0.492. Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology, we validated the CDO1 and CELF4 methylation detection with 87.5% sensitivity and 95.9% specificity as a useful strategy for the triage of women with PMB for the detection of EC. In addition, 100% of type II EC (n = 6) were positively detected by the CDO1 or CELF4 methylation test. Conclusion: The CDO1 and CELF4 methylation test with high specificity as an auxiliary diagnostic tool or alternative method provides physicians with a reference to distinguish between benign and malignant tumors in women with postmenopausal bleeding, to justify the necessity of using invasive methods to confirm diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Non-invasive brain stimulation therapy for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has shown beneficial effects. Recently, we and others demonstrated that visual sensory stimulation using rhythmic 40 Hz light flicker effectively improved cognitive deficits in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease and stroke. However, whether rhythmic visual 40 Hz light flicker stimulation can ameliorate behavioral deficits in ASD remains unknown. Here, we show that 16p11.2 deletion female mice exhibit a strong social novelty deficit, which was ameliorated by treatment with a long-term 40 Hz light stimulation. The elevated power of local-field potential (LFP) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of 16p11.2 deletion female mice was also effectively reduced by 40 Hz light treatment. Importantly, the 40 Hz light flicker reversed the excessive excitatory neurotransmission of PFC pyramidal neurons without altering the firing rate and the number of resident PFC neurons. Mechanistically, 40 Hz light flicker evoked adenosine release in the PFC to modulate excessive excitatory neurotransmission of 16p11.2 deletion female mice. Elevated adenosine functioned through its cognate A1 receptor (A1R) to suppress excessive excitatory neurotransmission and to alleviate social novelty deficits. Indeed, either blocking the A1R using a specific antagonist DPCPX or knocking down the A1R in the PFC using a shRNA completely ablated the beneficial effects of 40 Hz light flicker. Thus, this study identified adenosine as a novel neurochemical mediator for ameliorating social novelty deficit by reducing excitatory neurotransmission during 40 Hz light flicker treatment. The 40 Hz light stimulation warrants further development as a non-invasive ASD therapeutics.

ABSTRACT

In the field of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, quantum dot (QD) assemblies have emerged as promising candidate photocatalysts due to their superior light absorption and better substrate adsorption. However, the poor contacts within QD assemblies lead to low interfacial charge transfer efficiency, making QD assemblies suffer from unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. Herein, a novel approach is presented involving the construction of strongly interfacial fused CdS QD assemblies (CdS QD gel) for CO2 reduction. The novel CdS QD gel demonstrates outstanding photocatalytic performance for CO2 methanation, achieving a CH4 generation rate of ≈296 µmol g-1 h-1, with a selectivity surpassing 76% and an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 1.4%. Further investigations reveal that the robust interfacial fusion in these CdS QDs not only boosts their ability to absorb visible light but also significantly promotes charge separation. The present work paves the way for utilizing QD gel photocatalysts in realizing efficient CO2 reduction and highlights the critical role of interfacial engineering in photocatalysts.

BACKGROUND: According to the latest report, colorectal cancer is still one of the most prevalent cancers, with the third highest incidence and mortality worldwide. Treatment of advanced rectal cancer with distant metastases is usually unsatisfactory, especially for mismatch repair proficient (pMMR) rectal cancer, which leads to poor prognosis and recurrence. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a pMMR rectal adenocarcinoma with metastases of multiple lymph nodes, including the left supraclavicular lymph node, before treatment in a 70-year-old man. He received full courses of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by 4 cycles of programmed death 1 inhibitor Tislelizumab, and a pathologic complete response (pCR) was achieved, and the lesion of the left supraclavicular lymph node also disappeared. CONCLUSION: pMMR advanced rectal cancer with preserved intact distant metastatic lymph nodes may benefit from full-course CRT combined with immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has become a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Globally, the number of cases of HIV continues to increase. Electronic health (eHealth) interventions have emerged as promising tools to support disease self-management among people living with HIV. The purpose of this umbrella review is to systematically evaluate and summarize the evidence and results of published systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the effectiveness of eHealth interventions for HIV prevention, testing and management. METHODS: PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched for reviews. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using AMSTAR-2. RESULTS: A total of 22 systematic reviews were included. The methodological quality of the reviews was low or critically low. EHealth interventions range from Internet, computer, or mobile interventions to websites, programs, applications, email, video, games, telemedicine, texting, and social media, or a combination of them. The majority of the reviews showed evidence of effectiveness (including increased participation in HIV management behaviours, successfully changed HIV testing behaviours, and reduced risk behaviours). EHealth interventions were effective in the short term. CONCLUSIONS: Ehealth interventions have the potential to improve HIV prevention, HIV testing and disease management. Due to the limitations of the low methodological quality of the currently available systematic reviews, more high-quality evidence is needed to develop clear and robust recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Biallelic loss-of-function variants in SMPD4 cause a rare and severe neurodevelopmental disorder. These variants have been identified in a group of children with neurodevelopmental disorders with microcephaly, arthrogryposis, and structural brain anomalies. SMPD4 encodes a sphingomyelinase that hydrolyzes sphingomyelin into ceramide at neutral pH and can thereby affect membrane lipid homeostasis. SMPD4 localizes to the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear envelope and interacts with nuclear pore complexes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the efficient prenatal diagnosis of rare and undiagnosed diseases, the parallel detection of copy number variants (CNVs) and single nucleotide variants using whole-exome analysis is required. A physical examination of the parents was performed. Karyotype and whole-exome analysis were performed for the fetus and the parents. RESULTS: A fetus with microcephaly and arthrogryposis; biallelic null variants (c.387-1G>A; Chr2[GRCh38]: g.130142742_130202459del) were detected by whole-exome sequencing (WES). We have reported for the first time the biallelic loss-of-function mutations in SMPD4 in patients born to unrelated parents in China. CONCLUSION: WES could replace chromosomal microarray analysis and copy number variation sequencing as a more cost-effective genetic test for detecting CNVs and diagnosing highly heterogeneous conditions.

ABSTRACT

Background: Tumor genetic anomalies and immune dysregulation are pivotal in the progression of multiple myeloma (MM). Accurate patient stratification is essential for effective MM management, yet current models fail to comprehensively incorporate both molecular and immune profiles. Methods: We examined 776 samples from the MMRF CoMMpass database, employing univariate regression with LASSO and CIBERSORT algorithms to identify 15 p53-related genes and six immune cells with prognostic significance in MM. A p53-TIC (tumor-infiltrating immune cells) classifier was constructed by calculating scores using the bootstrap-multicox method, which was further validated externally (GSE136337) and through ten-fold internal cross-validation for its predictive reliability and robustness. Results: The p53-TIC classifier demonstrated excellent performance in predicting the prognosis in MM. Specifically, patients in the p53low/TIChigh subgroup had the most favorable prognosis and the lowest tumor mutational burden (TMB). Conversely, those in the p53high/TIClow subgroup, with the least favorable prognosis and the highest TMB, were predicted to have the best anti-PD1 and anti-CTLA4 response rate (40 %), which can be explained by their higher expression of PD1 and CTLA4. The three-year area under the curve (AUC) was 0.80 in the total sample. Conclusions: Our study highlights the potential of an integrated analysis of p53-associated genes and TIC in predicting prognosis and aiding clinical decision-making in MM patients. This finding underscores the significance of comprehending the intricate interplay between genetic abnormalities and immune dysfunction in MM. Further research into this area may lead to the development of more effective treatment strategies.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising secondary batteries that are widely used in portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and smart grids. The design and synthesis of high-performance electrode materials play a crucial role in achieving lithium-ion batteries with high energy density, prolonged cycle life, and superior safety. CoO has attracted significant attention as a negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and abundant resources. However, its limited conductivity and suboptimal cycling performance impede its potential applications. The study proposes a novel micro-tube reaction method for the synthesis of Co@CoO/C, utilizing Kapok fiber as a template with a special hollow structure. The microstructure and composition of the samples were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After conducting electrochemical performance tests, it was discovered that at a current density of 100 mA/g and within the range of 0.01-3.0 V for 50 charge and discharge cycles. Co@CoO/C composite negative electrode exhibits a reversible lithium insertion specific capacity of 499.8 mAh/g and keep a discharge capacity retention rate of 97.6 %. The greatly improved lithium storage and stability performance of Co@CoO/C composite anode is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between Co@CoO nanoparticles and the kapok carbon microtubule structure.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia and knee osteoarthritis are common age-related diseases that have become important public health issues worldwide. Few studies have reported the association between muscle mass loss and knee osteoarthritis. This may be due to the high level of heterogeneity between studies stemming from different definitions of muscle mass loss. METHODS: The systematic searches were carried out in PubMed and Web of Science from the inception of the databases until 13 January 2023, by two independent researchers. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) for overall and subgroup analyses were obtained using either a random effects model (I2 >50%) or fixed effects model (I2 ≤50%) in Stata. RESULTS: Of the 1,606 studies identified, we ultimately included 12 articles on the association between muscle mass and knee osteoarthritis (prospective: n = 5; cross-sectional: n = 7). Low-quality evidence indicated that low muscle mass index and sarcopenic obesity increase the odds of knee osteoarthritis (low muscle mass index OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.13-1.64; sarcopenic obesity OR: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.35-2.34). However, no association was observed between general sarcopenia or low muscle mass with knee osteoarthritis. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that low muscle mass index and sarcopenic obesity were associated with an increased risk of developing knee osteoarthritis.

ABSTRACT

The in-plane heterojunctions with atomic-level thickness and chemical-bond-connected tight interfaces possess high carrier separation efficiency and fully exposed surface active sites, thus exhibiting exceptional photocatalytic performance. However, the construction of in-plane heterojunctions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we prepared an in-plane ZnIn2S4/In(OH)3 heterojunction (ZISOH) by partial conversion of ZnIn2S4 to In(OH)3 through the addition of H2O2. This in situ oxidation etching-hydrolysis approach enables the ZISOH heterojunction to not only preserve the original nanosheet morphology of ZnIn2S4 but also form an intimate interface. Moreover, generated In(OH)3 serves as an electron-accepting platform and also promotes the adsorption of CO2. As a result, the heterojunction exhibits a remarkably enhanced performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The production rate and selectivity of CO reach 1760 µmol g-1 h-1 and 78%, respectively, significantly higher than those of ZnIn2S4 (842 µmol g-1 h-1 and 65%). This work puts forward a feasible and facile approach to construct in-plane heterojunctions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of two-dimensional metal sulfides.

To date, developing crystalline proton-conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with an inherent excellent proton-conducting ability and structural stability has been a critical priority in addressing the technologies required for sustainable development and energy storage. Bearing this in mind, a multifunctional organic ligand, 3,4-dimethylthiophene[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2DTD), was employed to generate two exceptionally stable three-dimensional porous Zr/Hf MOFs, [Zr6O4(OH)4(DTD)6]·5DMF·H2O (Zr-DTD) and [Hf6O4(OH)4(DTD)6]·4DMF·H2O (Hf-DTD), using solvothermal means. The presence of Zr6 or Hf6 nodes, strong Zr/Hf-O bonds, the electrical influence of the methyl group, and the steric effect of the thiophene unit all contribute to their structural stability throughout a wide pH range as well as in water. Their proton conductivity was fully examined at various relative humidities (RHs) and temperatures. Creating intricate and rich H-bonded networks between the guest water molecules, coordination solvent molecules, thiophene-S, -COOH, and -OH units within the framework assisted proton transfer. As a result, both MOFs manifest the maximum proton conductivity of 0.67 × 10-2 and 4.85 × 10-3 S·cm-1 under 98% RH/100 °C, making them the top-performing proton-conductive Zr/Hf-MOFs. Finally, by combining structural characteristics and activation energies, potential proton conduction pathways for the two MOFs were identified.

Heavy metals interact with each other in a coexisting manner to produce complex combined toxicity to organisms. At present, the toxic effects of chronic co-exposure to heavy metals hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and divalent nickel [Ni(II)] on organisms are seldom studied and the related mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we explored the mechanism of the colon injury in mice caused by chronic exposure to Cr or/and Ni. The results showed that, compared with the control group, Cr or/and Ni chronic exposure affected the body weight of mice, and led to infiltration of inflammatory cells in the colon, decreased the number of goblet cells, fusion of intracellular mucus particles and damaged cell structure of intestinal epithelial. In the Cr or/and Ni exposure group, the activity of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) increased, the expression levels of MUC2 were significantly down-regulated, and those of ZO-1 and Occludin were significantly up-regulated. Interestingly, factorial analysis revealed an interaction between Cr and Ni, which was manifested as antagonistic effects on iNOS activity, ZO-1 and MUC2 mRNA expression levels. Transcriptome sequencing further revealed that the expression of genes-related to inflammation, intestinal mucus and tight junctions changed obviously. Moreover, the relative contents of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) in the Cr, Ni and Cr+Ni groups all changed with in-vitro gastrointestinal (IVG)digestion, especially in the Cr+Ni group. Our results indicated that the chronic exposure to Cr or/and Ni can lead to damage to the mice colon, and the relative content changes of Cr(VI) and Ni(II) might be the main reason for the antagonistic effect of Cr+Ni exposure on the colon damage.

OBJECTIVE:  There is limited data on the pathogenic microorganisms associated with anorectal abscesses. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the types and quantities of pathogenic microorganisms in the pus cultures of patients with anorectal abscesses and to explore the correlation between pathogenic microorganisms and types of anorectal abscesses. METHODS:  A retrospective analysis was conducted on the microbiological data of 517 inpatient surgical patients with anorectal abscesses treated at a single center from January 2017 to December 2021. Chi-square tests were used to analyze whether there were differences in the types and quantities of pathogenic microorganisms among different types of anorectal abscesses. RESULTS:  Among the 517 patients, the mean age was 38.5 years, with an average duration of illness of 7.4 days. Of these, 440 (85.1%) were male and 77 (14.9%) were female. The types of anorectal abscesses included perianal abscesses (54 cases, 10.4%), intersphincteric abscesses (253 cases, 48.9%), ischiorectal abscesses (129 cases, 25.0%), deep posterior anal space (DPAS) abscesses (26 cases, 5.0%), supra-levator abscesses (10 cases, 1.9%), and horseshoe abscesses (45 cases, 8.7%). A total of 23 different microorganisms were cultured from the 517 pus specimens. The most common microorganism was Escherichia coli (323 cases, 62.5%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (77 cases, 14.9%), Bacteroides fragilis (nine cases, 1.7%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (eight cases, 1.5%), and Staphylococcus aureus (seven cases, 1.4%). Additionally, no microorganisms were cultured from 58 (11.2%) pus specimens. Nine patients (1.7%) were admitted with concomitant necrotizing fasciitis. Among the nine cases of concurrent necrotizing fasciitis, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and S. aureus were cultured in six (66.7%), two (22.2%), and one (11.1%) case, respectively. Chi-square tests revealed no significant differences in the types and quantities of pathogenic microorganisms among different types of anorectal abscesses (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION:  This study provides a large sample of pus culture microbiological data from patients with anorectal abscesses. Regardless of whether it is a simple anorectal abscess or concurrent necrotizing fasciitis, E. coli was the most common microorganism cultured from the pus of patients with anorectal abscesses. Other common microorganisms include K. pneumoniae, B. fragilis, and S. aureus. These results provide evidence for the precise antibiotic treatment of anorectal abscesses. Additionally, there were no differences in the types and quantities of pathogenic microorganisms among different types of anorectal abscesses.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease continues to be a leading cause of mortality worldwide, highlighting the need to explore innovative approaches to improve cardiovascular health outcomes. Time-restricted fasting (TRF) is a dietary intervention that involves limiting the time window for food consumption. It has gained attention for its potential benefits on metabolic health and weight management. This study aims to investigate the impact of TRF on key risk factors, including body weight, glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and lipid profile. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search in five databases (Scopus, Embase, PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science) for relevant studies up to January 2023. After applying inclusion criteria, 12 studies were eligible for analysis. Quality assessment was conducted using the ROB-2.0 tool and ROBINS-I. Risk of bias was mapped using Revman 5.3, and data analysis included Hartung-Knapp adjustment using R 4.2.2. RESULTS: The group that underwent the TRF intervention exhibited a significant decrease in body weight (SMD: -0.22; 95%CI: -0.41, -0.04; P < 0.05) and fat mass (SMD: -0.19; 95%CI: -0.36, -0.02; P < 0.05), while maintaining lean mass (SMD: -0.09; 95%CI: -0.08, 0.26; P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: TRF has shown potential as a treatment strategy for reducing total body weight by targeting adipose tissue, with potential improvements in cardiometabolic function.

Calcification roasting-acid leaching is a clean, efficient, and environmentally friendly process, but in the roasting process, the local temperature is often too high, the heat release is not timely, and the heat transfer is blocked. Furthermore, the material is easy to sinter, which affects the final vanadium extraction effect. In this paper, a small amount of CeO2 was introduced in the roasting process of vanadium slag to promote the calcified roasting. The results showed that the vanadium leaching rate reached 93.17% with the addition of 0.1 wt % CeO2 at a roasting temperature of 750 °C, which was higher than that obtained without CeO2 addition (90.00%). The results of XPS, XRD, and SEM-EDS analyses confirmed that adding CeO2 to the roasted clinker significantly increased the proportion of pentavalent vanadium to the total vanadium by up to 28.64%. O2-TPD analysis revealed an enhanced chemisorbed oxygen with the CeO2-assisted roasting, indicated the activation of oxygen by CeO2, and resulted in an enhanced oxidation of vanadium. The work in this paper establishes an alternative route for catalytic oxidation-enhanced vanadium slag roasting, which can improve the utilization of vanadium slag at relatively lower temperatures under the action of CeO2 and is of positive significance in solving the problems of sintering and energy consumption in the roasting process.

BACKGROUND: Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is the most common type of orthostatic intolerance in children. We investigated whether platelet-related factors related to treatment efficacy in children suffering from VVS treated with metoprolol. METHODS: Metoprolol-treated VVS patients were recruited. The median duration of therapy was three months. Patients were followed and divided into two groups, treament-effective group and treatment-ineffective group. Logistic and least absolute shrinkage selection operator regressions were used to examine treatment outcome variables. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves, precision-recall (PR) curves, calibration plots, and decision curve analyses were used to evaluate the nomogram model. RESULTS: Among the 72 patients who complete the follow-up, treatment-effective group and treatment-ineffective group included 42 (58.3%) and 30 (41.7%) cases, respectively. The patients in the treatment-effective group exhibited higher mean platelet volume (MPV) [(11.0 ± 1.0) fl vs. (9.8 ± 1.0) fl, P < 0.01] and platelet distribution width [12.7% (12.3%, 14.3%) vs. 11.3% (10.2%, 12.2%), P < 0.01] than those in the treatment-ineffective group. The sex ratio was significantly different (P = 0.046). A fit model comprising age [odds ratio (OR) = 0.766, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.594-0.987] and MPV (OR = 5.613, 95% CI = 2.297-13.711) might predict therapeutic efficacy. The area under the curve of the ROC and PR curves was computed to be 0.85 and 0.9, respectively. The P value of the Hosmer-Lemeshow test was 0.27. The decision curve analysis confirmed that managing children with VVS based on the predictive model led to a net advantage ranging from 0.01 to 0.58. The nomogram is convenient for clinical applications. CONCLUSION: A novel nomogram based on age and MPV can predict the therapeutic benefits of metoprolol in children with VVS.
