ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Research has linked multimorbidity with psychological distress among people with multimorbidity but the available findings are inconsistent. This study was to investigate the prevalence of multimorbidity and incidence of psychological distress in a nationally representative sample of Chinese older adults and examine the association between multimorbidity and psychological distress in this population. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional, secondary analysis using data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Participants' socio-demographic characteristics and clinical information were obtained. Psychological distress including anxiety and depression were assessed by the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (10-item CES-D). Binary logistic regression was used to ascertain the association between multimorbidity and psychological distress with covariates adjustment. RESULTS: Compared with those without physical chronic conditions, having five or more physical chronic conditions was associated with the likelihood of depression after covariates adjustment. CONCLUSION: Psychological distress is a common health issue among Chinese older adults with multimorbidity. Having multimorbidity might not be associated with psychological distress represented by anxiety and depression. Management of multimorbidity among this population would benefit from more attention on the mental health domain.

ABSTRACT

Cell division cycle 42 (Cdc42) is a critical regulator, which functions in cancer metastasis. Numerous previous studies have demonstrated that vav guanine nucleotide exchange factor 1 (Vav1) is ectopically expressed in numerous types of human malignancies and have suggested that Vav1 may efficiently promote the formation of invadopodia and matrix degradation by regulating the activation of Cdc42. Total alkaloids of Corydalis saxicola bunting (TAOCSB), a type of alkaloid compound extracted from the root of C. saxicola bunting, has been revealed to have anticancer properties. However, there is no available information to address the effects of TAOCSB on the metastasis of human lung cancer. In the present study, the anticancer effect on A549 non-small cell lung cancer cells induced by TAOCSB was investigated, as well as its underlying mechanisms. The results demonstrated that a low dose of TAOCSB exhibited anti-metastatic potential in suppressing the invasion and migration of A549 cells, and this action may be involved in TAOCSB-mediated inhibition of Cdc42 expression at the level of mRNA and protein in parallel with TAOCSB-mediated inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 protein expression levels. Although the present study did not reveal the expression level of Vav1 protein in A549 cells, the expression level of Vav1 mRNA was investigated. The effect of Vav1 expression in A549 cells requires further study. Overall, the results of the present study revealed that TAOCSB may provide more information regarding lung cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

The growth-correlated genes that are part of the neuroendocrine growth axis play crucial roles in the regulation of growth and development of pig. The identification of genetic polymorphisms in these genes will enable the scientist to evaluate the biological relevance of such polymorphisms and to gain a better understanding of quantitative traits like growth. In the present study, seven pairs of primers were designed to obtain unknown sequences of growth-correlated genes, and other 25 pairs of primers were designed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) using the denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) technology in four pig breeds (Duroc, Landrace, Lantang and Wuzhishan), significantly differing in growth and development characteristics. A total of 101 polymorphisms were discovered in 10,707 base pairs (bp) from six genes of the ghrelin (GHRL), leptin (LEP), insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II), insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP-2), insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3), and somatostatin (SS). The observed average distances between the SNP in the 5'UTR, coding regions, introns and 3'UTR were 134, 521, 81 and 92 bp, respectively. Four SNPs were found in the coding regions of IGF-II, IGFBP-2 and LEP, respectively. Two synonymous mutations were obtained in IGF-II and LEP genes respectively, and two non-synonymous were found in IGFBP-2 and LEP genes, respectively. Seven other mutations were also observed. Thirty-two PCR-RFLP markers were found among 101 polymorphisms of the six genes. The SNP discovered in this study would provide suitable markers for association studies of candidate genes with growth related traits in pig.
