ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and thus calls for development of more effective therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to identify potential therapeutic targets for coronary heart disease (CHD) and myocardial infarction (MI) by investigating the causal relationship between plasma proteins and these conditions. METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was performed to evaluate more than 1600 plasma proteins for their causal associations with CHD and MI. The MR findings were further confirmed through Bayesian colocalization, Summary-data-based Mendelian Randomization (SMR), and Transcriptome-Wide Association Studies (TWAS) analyses. Further analyses, including enrichment analysis, single-cell analysis, MR analysis of cardiovascular risk factors, phenome-wide Mendelian Randomization (Phe-MR), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network construction were conducted to verify the roles of selected causal proteins. RESULTS: Thirteen proteins were causally associated with CHD, seven of which were also causal for MI. Among them, FES and PCSK9 were causal proteins for both diseases as determined by several analytical methods. PCSK9 was a risk factor of CHD (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.13-1.38, P = 7.47E-06) and MI (OR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.21-1.54, P = 2.30E-07), whereas FES was protective against CHD (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.59-0.79, P = 6.40E-07) and MI (OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.54-0.77, P = 5.38E-07). Further validation through enrichment and single-cell analysis confirmed the causal effects of these proteins. Moreover, MR analysis of cardiovascular risk factors, Phe-MR, and PPI network provided insights into the potential drug development based on the proteins. CONCLUSIONS: This study investigated the causal pathways associated with CHD and MI, highlighting the protective and risk roles of FES and PCSK9, respectively. FES. Specifically, the results showed that these proteins are promising therapeutic targets for future drug development.

ABSTRACT

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a common pathological type of non-small cell lung cancer; identifying preferable biomarkers has become one of the current challenges. Given that VTA1 has been reported associated with tumor progression in various human solid cancers but rarely reported in LUAD, herein, RNA sequencing data from TCGA and GTEx were obtained for analysis of VTA1 expression and differentially expressed gene (DEG). Furthermore, functional enrichment analysis of VTA1-related DEGs was performed by GO/KEGG, GSEA, immune cell infiltration analysis, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. In addition, the clinical significance of VTA1 in LUAD was figured out by Kaplan-Meier Cox regression and prognostic nomogram model. R package was used to analyze incorporated studies. As a result, VTA1 was highly expressed in various malignancies, including LUAD, compared with normal samples. Moreover, high expression of VTA1 was associated with poor prognosis in 533 LUAD samples, as well as T stage T2&T3&T4, N stage N1&N2&N3, M stage M1, pathologic stage II&III&IV, and residual tumor R1&R2, et al. (P < 0.05). High VTA1 was an independent prognostic factor in Cox regression analysis; Age and cytogenetics risk were included in the nomogram prognostic model. Furthermore, a total of 4232 DEGs were identified between the high- and the low-expression group, of which 736 genes were up-regulated and 3496 genes were down-regulated. Collectively, high expression of VTA1 is a potential biomarker for adverse outcomes in LUAD. The DEGs and pathways recognized in the study provide a preliminary grasp of the underlying molecular mechanisms of LUAD carcinogenesis and progression.

ABSTRACT

Background: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often present with atrial fibrillation (AF), but the common pathophysiological mechanisms between the two are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the common biological mechanisms of COPD and AF and to search for important biomarkers through bioinformatic analysis of public RNA sequencing databases. Methods: Four datasets of COPD and AF were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The overlapping genes common to both diseases were screened by WGCNA analysis, followed by protein-protein interaction network construction and functional enrichment analysis to elucidate the common mechanisms of COPD and AF. Machine learning algorithms were also used to identify key biomarkers. Co-expression analysis, "transcription factor (TF)-mRNA-microRNA (miRNA)" regulatory networks and drug prediction were performed for key biomarkers. Finally, immune cell infiltration analysis was performed to evaluate further the immune cell changes in the COPD dataset and the correlation between key biomarkers and immune cells. Results: A total of 133 overlapping genes for COPD and AF were obtained, and the enrichment was mainly focused on pathways associated with the inflammatory immune response. A key biomarker, cyclin dependent kinase 8 (CDK8), was identified through screening by machine learning algorithms and validated in the validation dataset. Twenty potential drugs capable of targeting CDK8 were obtained. Immune cell infiltration analysis revealed the presence of multiple immune cell dysregulation in COPD. Correlation analysis showed that CDK8 expression was significantly associated with CD8+ T cells, resting dendritic cell, macrophage M2, and monocytes. Conclusions: This study highlights the role of the inflammatory immune response in COPD combined with AF. The prominent link between CDK8 and the inflammatory immune response and its characteristic of not affecting the basal expression level of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) make it a possible promising therapeutic target for COPD combined with AF.

ABSTRACT

Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB), commonly called Tianma in Chinese, is a valuable and extensively used herbal Traditional Chinese Medicine with a wide range of clinical applications. It has been used to treat headaches, dizziness, stroke, epilepsy, amnesia, spasm, and other disorders since ancient times. Hundreds of compounds, including phenols, glycosides, polysaccharides, steroids, organic acids, and others, have been isolated and identified from this plant. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that its active ingredients possess many pharmacological effects, such as neuroprotective, analgesic, sedation and hypnosis, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, anti-convulsant, anti-dizziness, blood pressure lowering, blood lipids lowering, liver protection, anti-tumor, and immunity enhancement effects. The present review discusses the pharmacological actions and mechanisms of various components of GEB in cardiovascular diseases to provide a reference for further study of GEB.

ABSTRACT

Rural revitalization is the core decision for eradicating global poverty and achieving shared prosperity, and one of the most important works is to optimize and manage rural land space. A theoretical framework based on urbanization theory was built to reveal the rural residential land transition in the Tianjin metropolitan area, China from 1990 to 2020. The transition features are identified by computing the land-use conversion matrix and the rural residential land expansion index (RRLEI) and the influencing factors and mechanisms through a multiple linear regression model. The spatial distribution of rural residential land shows that it expands from the inner suburbs to the outer suburbs, then diminishes in the outer suburbs, and extends to the Binhai New Area. Low-level conflicts between rural residential land and urban construction land occurred during the rapid urbanization period, resulting in disorganized and wasteful growth. The inner suburbs have edge-expansion, dispersion, and urban encroachment patterns; the outer suburbs have edge-expansion, infilling, and dispersion patterns, with little urban encroachment; and Binhai New Area has just an edge-expansion pattern. During decelerated urbanization stage, a high-level conflict occurred between rural residential land and arable land, forestland, grassland, water, and urban construction land. Dispersion grew as urban encroachment reduced in the inner suburbs; dispersion increased while urban encroachment declined in the outer suburbs; dispersion, infilling expansion, and urban encroachment increased in the Binhai New Area. During the saturation stage of urbanization, rural residential land evolved in tandem with other forms of land use, with more efficient land use and diverse uses. The main pattern of rural residential land in a suburban region is still edge-expansion, dispersion has expanded in the Binhai New Area, and urban encroachment is the way of urban development in the inner suburbs. Economic factors and economic location strongly impact the dispersion pattern. Edge-expansion and infilling patterns are impacted by comparable variables, including geographical location, topography, population resources, and economic location. Furthermore, the amount of economic growth influences the edge-expansion pattern. It might be influenced by land policy, and the eight elements have no substantial relationship with urban occupancy. Based on resource endowment and pattern features, certain optimization techniques are given.

ABSTRACT

Four new germacrane sesquiterpene dilactones, 2ß-hydroxyl-11ß,13-dihydrodeoxymikanolide (1), 3ß-hydroxyl-11ß,13-dihydrodeoxymikanolide (2), 1α,3ß-dihydroxy-4,9-germacradiene-12,8:15,6-diolide (3), and (11ß,13-dihydrodeoxymikanolide-13-yl)-adenine (4), together with five known ones (5-9) were isolated from the aerial parts of Mikania micrantha. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Compound 4 is featured with an adenine moiety in the molecule, which is the first nitrogen-containing sesquiterpenoid so far isolated from this plant species. These compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram-(+) bacteria of Staphyloccocus aureus (SA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Bacillus cereus (BC) and Curtobacterium. flaccumfaciens (CF), and three Gram-(-) bacteria of Escherichia coli (EC), Salmonella. typhimurium (SA), and Pseudomonas Solanacearum (PS). Compounds 4 and 7-9 were found to show strong in vitro antibacterial activity toward all the tested bacteria with the MIC values ranging from 1.56 to 12.5 µg/mL. Notably, compounds 4 and 9 showed significant antibacterial activity against the drug-resistant bacterium of MRSA with MIC value 6.25 µg/mL, which was close to reference compound vancomycin (MIC 3.125 µg/mL). Compounds 4 and 7-9 were further revealed to show in vitro cytotoxic activity toward human tumor A549, HepG2, MCF-7, and HeLa cell lines, with IC50 values ranging from 8.97 to 27.39 µM. No antibacterial and cytotoxic activity were displayed for the other compounds. The present research provided new data to support that M. micrantha is rich in structurally diverse bioactive compounds worthy of further development for pharmaceutical applications and for crop protection in agricultural fields.

ABSTRACT

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is the most severe manifestation of cardiovascular disease. Xuefu Zhuyu Capsule (XFC), a proprietary Chinese medicine, is widely used in various cardiovascular diseases. At present, the molecular mechanism of XFC remains unclear. Objective: To explore the mechanism of anti-MI effects of XFC by combining network pharmacology and experiments. Methods: TCMSP, GeneCards, and DisGeNET databases were used to find the target of XFC. PPI analysis was performed by the STRING database. KEGG and GO analyses were performed by Metascape Database. Molecular docking was performed by Autodock Vina. HE staining, echocardiography, immunofluorescence, and TUNEL were performed to verify the prediction results. Results: Network pharmacology showed that quercetin, kaempferol, ß-sitosterol, luteolin, and baicalein were the main active ingredients of XFC. TNF, IL6, TP53, VEGFA, JUN, CASP3, and SIRT1 were the main targets of XFC. KEGG results showed that key genes were mainly enriched in lipid and atherosclerosis, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, and NF-κB signaling pathway. HE staining showed that XFC could improve the morphology of myocardial tissue. Echocardiography showed that XFC could improve cardiac function. TUNEL showed that XFC could reduce cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Immunofluorescence showed that XFC could reduce the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and increase the expression of CD31. In addition, we found that XFC may exert its therapeutic effects through SIRT1. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that SIRT1 may be the target of XFC in the treatment of MI. The active ingredients of XFC and SIRT1 can be stably bound. XFC could inhibit apoptosis, promote angiogenesis, and improve myocardial fibrosis through SIRT1.

ABSTRACT

Mitochondria play a key role in cellular metabolism. Mitochondrial dynamics (fusion and fission) and mitophagy, are critical to mitochondrial function. Fusion allows organelles to share metabolites, proteins, and mitochondrial DNA, promoting complementarity between damaged mitochondria. Fission increases the number of mitochondria to ensure that they are passed on to their offspring during mitosis. Mitophagy is a process of selective removal of excess or damaged mitochondria that helps improve energy metabolism. Cardiometabolic disease is characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction, high production of reactive oxygen species, increased inflammatory response, and low levels of ATP. Cardiometabolic disease is closely related to mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. This paper reviewed the mechanisms of mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy (focus on MFN1, MFN2, OPA1, DRP1, and PINK1 proteins) and their roles in diabetic cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, atherosclerosis, and obesity.

ABSTRACT

Factories swiftly and precisely grasp the real-time data of the production instrumentation, which is the foundation for the development and progress of industrial intelligence in industrial production. Weather, light, angle, and other unknown circumstances, on the other hand, impair the image quality of meter dials in natural environments, resulting in poor dial image quality. The remote meter reading system has trouble recognizing dial pictures in extreme settings, challenging it to meet industrial production demands. This paper provides multiple attention and encoder-decoder-based gas meter recognition networks (MAEDR) for this problem. First, from the acquired dial photos, the dial images with extreme conditions such as overexposure, artifacts, blurring, incomplete display of characters, and occlusion are chosen to generate the gas meter dataset. Then, a new character recognition network is proposed utilizing multiple attention and an encoder-decoder structure. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) extract visual features from dial images, encode visual features employing multi-head self-attention and position information, and facilitate feature alignment using the connectionist temporal classification (CTC) method. A novel two-step attention decoder is presented to improve the accuracy of recognition results. convolutional block attention module (CBAM) reweights the visual features from the CNN and the semantic features computed by the encoder to improve model performance; long short-term memory attention (LSTM attention) focuses on the relationship between feature sequences. According to experimental data, our system can effectively and efficiently identify industrial gas meter picture digits with 91.1% identification accuracy, faster inference speed, and higher accuracy than standard algorithms. The accuracy and practicality of the recognition can fulfill the needs of instrument data detection and recognition in industrial production, and it has a wide range of applications.

ABSTRACT

Background: Myocardial ischemia (MI) is a major public health problem with high mortality and morbidity worldwide. Huoxue Wentong formula (HX), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, exhibits unambiguous effects on treating MI and preventing cardiovascular diseases. However, the molecular mechanism of the therapeutic effects of HX on MI remains largely unknown. Objective: This study combined microbiology, metabolomics, and network pharmacology to explore the relationship between the gut microbiota and its metabolites in MI rats and the efficacy of HX. Methods: First, the MI rat model was established by ligation of left anterior descending. Echocardiography, Masson's staining, and hematoxylin and eosin staining were used to evaluate the effect of HX on MI. Then, fecal metabolomics and 16S rRNA sequencing were used to obtain the microbial and metabolic characteristics of HX on MI. After that, network pharmacology was used to predict the target and action pathway of HX in treating MI. Finally, the relationship between fecal metabolites and target was explored through bioinformatics. Results: HX can improve the cardiac function and ameliorated myocardial fibrosis in MI rats. Moreover, HX can affect the gut microbiota community and metabolites of MI rats, especially Bacteroides, Deferribacteres, Ruminococcus_sp._zagget7, Acidobacteria, daidzein, L-lactic acid, and malate. Network pharmacology found that HX can function through tumor necrosis factor (TNF), tumor protein p53 (TP53), interleukin 6 (IL6), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), fos proto-oncogene (FOS), bcl2-associated X (BAX), myeloperoxidase (MPO), PI3K-Akt signaling pathways, and HIF-1 signaling pathway. The mechanism study showed that the anti-MI effect of HX was related to valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, fatty acid biosynthesis, and arachidonic acid metabolism. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that HX treated MI rats in a multitarget and multipathway manner. Its mechanism is related to the change of gut microbiota and the regulation of valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis, fatty acid biosynthesis, and arachidonic acid metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of XFZYD for coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of randomized controlled trials using XFZYD for CHD was conducted in 10 electronic databases from their establishment to December 20, 2020. The researchers screened the relevant trials in NoteExpress, extracted the data in duplicate independently, assessed the risk of bias in the trials using the Cochrane collaboration tool, and then used Rev Man 5.3 for data analysis. RESULTS: 30 trials with 3126 participants were included for meta-analysis. The results showed that the clinical effects of XFZYD and its combination with chemical drugs (CD) were 1.13 (RR; 1.13; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.24) and 1.26 (RR; 1.26; 95% CI, 1.20 to 1.32) times those of CD, respectively. And, it could also improve electrocardiogram effect, which was 1.63 (RR; 1.63; 95% CI, 1.04 to 2.53) times that of CD. XFZYD could not only decrease duration of angina pectoris and improve vascular endothelial function but also obviously reduce the TCM syndrome score. When used in combination with CD, it could also lower AF, correct the dyslipidemia, and reduce the blood viscosity. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrated that XFZYD had great advantages in treating CHD with no obvious adverse reactions. Therefore, it is believed that XFZYD is more suitable for CHD patients with clinical indicators of dyslipidemia, high blood viscosity, or vascular endothelial dysfunction. This study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis with some unique ways, including its comprehensiveness, large-scale search, the novelty of findings, and transparent approach.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer (LC) has the highest mortality rate among all the other types of cancer in the world. T cells are known to be the key factor in inducing the immune response during LC. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to screen and analyze RNAs associated with CD8(+) T cells and activated memory CD4(+) T cells in lung adenocarcinomas, a subtype of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC-LUAD). METHODS: Gene expression RNA-seq data and clinical data of NSCLC-LUAD were downloaded from the XENA database. The data were divided into low scores and high scores based on the Stromal and Immune scores. Then, all the genes were screened for identifying those specifically associated with CD8(+) T cells and activated memory CD4(+) T cells. The screened genes were used for the construction of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and for Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis along with prognosis analysis. Based on the results of the prognostic analysis, the prognostic-related genes were used to analyze long noncoding (lnc)RNA-micro(mi)RNA-mRNA networks and to predict small chemical molecules. RESULTS: According to the Immune and Stromal scores, a total of 885 upregulated and 29 downregulated RNAs were identified. A total of 90 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found to be related to CD8(+) T immune cells, and 48 DEGs were related to activated memory CD4(+) T cells. GPR174 and CD226 suggested a favorable prognosis. For CD8(+) and activated memory CD4(+) T cells, 112 and 113 PPI edges were obtained, respectively. GPR174 was found to be regulated by hsa-miR-19b-5p and hsa-miR-19b-2-5p, and both of these two miRNAs were regulated by lncRNA PCED1B-AS1. CD226 was regulated by hsa-miR-379-5p, which was in turn regulated by lncRNA RP11-81H14.2. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide a deeper understanding of the T cell-related ceRNA regulatory mechanism in NSCLC-LUAD pathogenesis.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease. Identification of the biomarkers responsible for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndromes of psoriasis can help researchers recognize the different aspects of psoriasis and find novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of psoriasis. The current study investigated the levels of circulating Mo-MDSCs and Mo-MDSC-associated immune factors in the peripheral blood of psoriasis patients with different TCM syndromes. We found that the frequency of Mo-MDSCs (CD14+HLA-DR-/low cells) among CD14+ cells from plaque psoriasis patients with blood-stasis (BS) syndrome was significantly increased when compared with healthy controls (p < 0.001) and blood-heat (BH) syndrome group (p < 0.001), respectively. However, serum IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, TNF-α, IFN-γ, iNOS, Arg-1, and NO concentration showed no statistically significant difference between healthy controls and psoriasis patients as well as no significant difference between the BH and BS syndrome groups. Compared with healthy controls, the mRNA expression of Arg-1, TNF-α, ROR-γ, and PD-L1 was increased, while the mRNA expression of PD-1 and IL-10 was decreased in PBMCs from psoriasis patients. Moreover, the mRNA expression of TNF-α and FOXP3 in PBMCs showed a pronounced statistical difference between the psoriatic BH syndrome group and the BS syndrome group. Therefore, we provide evidence that the percentage of CD14+HLA-DR-/low MDSC/ CD14+ cells and TNF-α and Foxp3 mRNA expression levels in PBMCs are potential biomarkers for distinguishing TCM BH syndrome and BS syndrome.

ABSTRACT

This study reports an internal mixed particle model of dust and nitrate aerosols using the actual haze condition. We performed accurate calculations of linear depolarization ratios (LDR) of nitrate-coated mineral dust particles at three wavelengths (0.35, 0.53, and 1.06 µm) using the T-matrix method. The LDRs of the mono-disperse aerosol particles evolve differently as expressions in the Rayleigh and Mie domains. In the Rayleigh domain, the LDRs increase with the core-shell ratio and the aspect ratio and decrease when the wavelength increases. The forward and backward LDRs depend more on aspect ratio than on the core-shell ratio. In the Mie domain, the LDRs overall increase with the core-shell ratio and the aspect ratio, but there is no significant regular change. When the wavelength increases, the gradual change can be explained by the size parameter of the particles in the vicinity of the Rayleigh domain. For poly-disperse particles, the core-shell ratio mainly affects the position of the side-scattering peak, whereas aspect ratio affects the LDRs. The backscattering LDRs depend more on the variation of aspect ratio, and the core-shell ratio only affects LDRs in a small range. Furthermore, our results on the LDRs are highly promising for remote sensing of the non-spherical and inhomogeneous properties of fine aerosols compared with AERONET measurements. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the LDR evolution for coated non-spherical particles in a haze atmosphere. The LDRs can be used as an empirical reference for remote sensing to distinguish coated non-spherical particles.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To differentiate patients with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions from the high-risk population for preliminary screening of esophageal cancer using a feature index determined by a computer-aided tongue information acquisition and processing system (DS01-B). METHODS: Totally, 213 patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions and 2,840 normal subjects were collected including primarily screened and reexamined, all of them were confirmed with histological examinations. Their tongue color space values and manifestation features were extracted by DS01-B and analyzed. Firstly, the analysis of variance was performed to differentiate normal subjects from patients with esophageal cancer and premalignant lesions. Secondly, the logistic regression was conducted using 10 features and gender, age to get a predictive equation of the possibility of esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions. Lastly, the equation was tested by subjects undergoing primary screening. RESULTS: Saturation (S) values in the HSV color space showed significant differences between patients with esophageal cancer and normal subjects or those with mild atypical hyperplasia (P<0.05); blue-to-yellow (b) values in the Lab color space showed significant differences between patients with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions and normal subjects (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the computer-aided tongue inspection approach had an accuracy of 72.3% (2008/2776) in identifying patients with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions for preliminary screening in high-risk population. CONCLUSION: Computer-aided tongue inspection, with descriptive and quantitative profile as described in this study, could be applied as a cost- and timeefficient, non-invasive approach for preliminary screening of esophageal cancer in high-risk population.

ABSTRACT

Thoracic obstruction is mainly attributed to the scope of coronary heart disease in modern medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) shows a significant effect in the treatment of thoracic obstruction. In this research, a network pharmacology method was carried out to systemically study the underlying mechanism of the core herbal compatibility in TCM on the thoracic obstruction. First, we collected the literature about TCM prescriptions for treating thoracic obstruction from CNKI. Then, a prescription database was establish by TCM inheritance support platform system(V2.5) to determine the medication rules and core herbal compatibility in TCM. Finally, to obtain the potential signaling pathways, KEGG pathway analysis was performed by BATMAN-TCM online analysis tool. Results showed that the potential signal pathway of core herbal compatibility in TCM for the clinical treatment of thoracic obstruction was calcium ion and cGMP-PKG signaling pathway. This study provided a new research strategy for the study of the medication rules and mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of thoracic obstruction.

ABSTRACT

Taking Zhengzhou City, the capital of Henan Province in Central China, as the study area, and by using the theories and methodologies of diversity, a discreteness evaluation on the regional surface water, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and land surface temperature (LST) distribution was conducted in a 2 km x 2 km grid scale. Both the NDVI and the LST were divided into 4 levels, their spatial distribution diversity indices were calculated, and their connections were explored. The results showed that it was of operability and practical significance to use the theories and methodologies of diversity in the discreteness evaluation of the spatial distribution of regional thermal environment. There was a higher overlap of location between the distributions of surface water and the lowest temperature region, and the high vegetation coverage was often accompanied by low land surface temperature. In 1988-2009, the discreteness of the surface water distribution in the City had an obvious decreasing trend. The discreteness of the surface water distribution had a close correlation with the discreteness of the temperature region distribution, while the discreteness of the NDVI classification distribution had a more complicated correlation with the discreteness of the temperature region distribution. Therefore, more environmental factors were needed to be included for a better evaluation.

ABSTRACT

By using two Landsat remote sensing images (May 14, 1988 by TM sensor and May 10, 2001 by ETM+ sensor) and local meteorological data, this paper analyzed the causes and harms of urban heat island (UHI) in Zhengzhou City. The brightness temperatures of the images were calculated by mono-window algorithm, and related thematic maps were figured out. The results showed that with the expanding urban area of Zhengzhou City, the UHI effect was growing. Comparing with that in 1988, the high-temperature region of the City in 2001 had a clear shift and expansion towards northeast and southwest, being similar to the change trends of the low vegetation coverage area and urban land area. In order to alleviate the growing UHI effect, attentions should be paid on the urban greening work and the choice of reasonable greening patterns in the process of urbanization.
