ABSTRACT

Morphological electron-microscopic evaluation of gastroduodenal mucosa in subjects who worked in the zone of radionuclide contamination after the Chernobyl accident in 1986-1987 and therefore exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation (18, 62 sGy on the average) discovered deficiency of tissue immunocompetent cells, dystrophic changes in the epithelium and stroma. In epithelial cells there were structural shifts in microvillae, organoids and nuclei. Epithelium, stroma and endothelium of blood vessels contained dark cells with thick hyaloplasm.

ABSTRACT

Results of the cytogenetic investigation on the Chernobyl accident decontamination participants, 5 years after the accident, have been disclosed. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on circulating blood lymphocytes, using a standard cultivation technique. Differences were detected between control group and decontamination participants on frequency of aberrant cells and aberrations of chromosome type in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Maximal cytogenetic effect on this data was detected in persons, who had worked between May and August 1986. On the base of cytogenetic investigation data, the authors proposed to form high-risk groups, including oncologic risk groups, which need a profound dynamic investigation.

ABSTRACT

Examination of 42 liquidators of Chernobyl power station accident consequences, which was conducted in 5-6 years after the work in Chernobyl, proved 66.7% of examinees to have hypervolemia of hepatic circulation. These changes are due to hyperkinetic type of central hemodynamics. The data obtained prove absence of sclerotic lesions in liver.

ABSTRACT

A total of 164 males aged from 22 to 50, who had taken part in liquidating the consequences of Chernobyl power station accident, was examined. According to the military cards irradiation dose did not exceed 25 cGy. Semen of 125 examinees was studied. One third of examinees showed sexual dysfunction, which did not appear to depend on the irradiation dose. Analyses revealed pathologic changes in semen and ultrasound demonstrated alterations in prostate and seminal vesicles similar to chronic prostatitis and vesiculitis. No typical radiation-induced lesions were discovered. The author suggest assigning infertility and impotence to the list of entitles, which occurred and exacerbated due to liquidating the consequences of Chernobyl power station accident.

ABSTRACT

The liquidators of Chernobyl power station accident consequences were subjected to cytogenetic examination in 5 years after the accident. The analysis included a routine method of peripheral blood lymphocyte culture. The exposed and reference groups turned out to differ in the occurrence of distorted cells and chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The highest cytopathogenic effect was seen in those, who had been working at the station in May-June 1986. The authors suggest to form the groups at high risk on the base of cytogenetic data and subject the groups to thorough examination for various diseases including malignancies.

ABSTRACT

Sixty-seven participants of the elimination of Chernobyl accident sequels were examined. Of these, 30 persons (44.8%) showed normal characteristics of the three small intestinal functions studied: activity of the intestinal enzyme beta-galactosidase, motility and microbial dissemination, 23 (34.3%) deficiency of the intestinal enzyme beta-galactosidase, and 24 (35.8%) bacterial dissemination of the small intestine. In 12 persons (17.9%), the deficiency of beta-galactosidase was associated with dysbiosis of the small intestine. The incidence of hypolactasia did not exceed the characteristic typical on the whole of the population of the Moscow region.

ABSTRACT

Blood analysis with the use of automated analyzer H-1 (Technicon), carried out in 31 subjects who were engaged in liquidation of the power plant accident aftereffects 3 years following their work at the station, has revealed elevated red cell counts, elevated counts of peripheral blood large nondifferentiated cells, dose-dependent increase of neutrophil count, reduced counts of lymphocytes and basophils, enlarged nuclear size in mononuclears and reduced optic density of these cells.

ABSTRACT

Radiocardiography and rheography of the pulmonary artery were used to examine impairments in hemodynamics and contractile function of the right ventricle in 40 patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis complicated with persistent hypertension. Right ventricular hemodynamic and contractile impairments were shown to be not equivalent with similar clinical and functional signs of pulmonary hypertension. This fact indicates that the use of special techniques is of practical value in the determination of right ventricular hemodynamics and myocardial contractility in patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis. Radiocardiography and rheography of the pulmonary artery are sufficiently reliable noninvasive techniques for examining the hemodynamics and contractile function of the right ventricular myocardium.
