ABSTRACT

Samples of breast milk were collected from 27 women and examined for residues of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) using gas-liquid chromatography. A questionnaire was used to obtain information on environmental factors relevant to the women's exposure to PCBs. The levels of breast milk PCB residues were considered in relation to the women's medical history before and during pregnancy and to the health status of the infants. Despite the fact that the production and use of PCBs were banned in Czechoslovakia in 1982, all breast milk samples tested had detectable levels of PCBs, with the average value of 2,411 ng.g-1 milk fat (i.e., 22.8 ng.g-1 whole milk). In 25% of the women the PCB levels were higher than 2,500 ng.g-1 milk fat, which is considered a limit concentration for PCB in breast milk.

ABSTRACT

There are introduced values of retention time of cca 30 pure drugs used in human medicine in CSSR. The values are expressed in Kovats indices for several temperatures and types of columns. It was found, that the indices are depending on lengths of columns.

ABSTRACT

The proposed method for ethanol determination is based on the simultaneous oxidation of ethanol and reduction of nitrosodimethylaniline to a quinonediimine derivative in the presence of NAD and horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase. Quinonediimine formed in this reaction is coupled with salicylamide and the absorbance of the resulting blue indaniline dye is measured. The new method yields identical results when compared with the currently used methods for the determination of blood alcohol (i.e., with the conventional enzymatic method, Widmark's method, and gas chromatography). Its main advantage is high sensitivity, little consumption of both enzyme and coenzyme, and the measurement in the visible range of the spectrum.

ABSTRACT

Possibilities were tested of using several phases of chromatography used in toxicological laboratories (3% OV-1, 3% OV-17, 3% NPGS + 0.75% TA) and mixed fillings (3% OV-17, 7.5% QF-1, 3% XE-60 in a 2 : 2. : 1 ratio) in the separation of chlorinated pesticides. In the tested fillings, the retention volumes and Kováts indices were measured for 16 chlorinated hydrocarbons. The amounts of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in water and eggs were also determined.

ABSTRACT

Residues of chlorinated pesticides in feed for laying hens, in eggs, poultry organs, potatoes, flour, and human fat tissues were determined by means of gas chromatography using electron recording detector. Further the amount of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in potatoes from various parts of the South Moravian Region was stated. HCH amounts in human fat tissues recorded in Czechoslovakia were higher than in some West European countries, DDT content being, however, on the same level.

ABSTRACT

A trace quantitative analysis of barbiturates has been carried out in blood, urine, organs and in gastric and intestinal concents. The amount of sample required for analysis is very small [approximately 400 mul blood]. Extraction is carried out four times with the mixture of acetone and either 1:1]. The preparation of columns, packing and standards has been described. The device used for the analyses [Chrom 3] is furnished with an adjusted feeding block preventing the decomposition of samples in the doser. The column temperature is 190 degrees C, the column packing is Chromaton N-AW-DMCS coated with 3% NPGS and 0.75% trimer acid, detector FID.
