ABSTRACT

The integration of transition metal dichalcogenides with photonic structures such as sol-gel SiOx:TiOy optical waveguides (WGs) makes possible the fabrication of photonic devices with the desired characteristics in the visible spectral range. In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a MoS2-based photodetector integrated with a sol-gel SiOx:TiOy WG. Based on the spectroscopic measurements performed for our device, we concluded that the light entering the WG is almost completely channeled out from the WG and absorbed by the MoS2 flake, which is deposited on the WG. Therefore, this device works as a photodetector. The light coupling into the MoS2 region in this device construction is due to the high contrast of refractive index between the van der Waals crystal and the sol-gel WG, which is ∼4 and ∼1.8, respectively. The obtained MoS2-based photodetectors exhibit a photoresponsivity of 0.3 A W-1 (n-type MoS2) and 7.53 mA W-1 (p-type MoS2) at a bias voltage of 2 V. These results reveal great potential in the integration of sol-gel WGs with van der Waals crystals in optoelectronic applications.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogels have various applications in medicine, for example, in systems for controlled drug release or as wound dressings, where they provide an appropriate environment for healing and constitute a barrier to microorganisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the action of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) hydrogels in wound healing therapy in vivo using a laboratory rat model. The hydrogels were formed from aqueous solutions of a CMCS biopolymer via electron beam irradiation, with the presence of a crosslinking agent of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. A histopathological examination of injured tissue, using a model of a hard-to-heal wound, indicated that the CMCS hydrogel supported healing. The new gel dressing, being noncytotoxic, presents great potential in wound treatment, with positive effects on the amount of inflammatory infiltration, young collagen formation, and the degree of epidermalization. A key advantage of the current approach (i.e., using competitive radiation technology for synthesis) is that it includes only one step, with the product being sterilized as it is synthesized. The hydrogel effectively supports wound healing and can serve as a bio-based and biodegradable platform for other medical applications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: An adequate interlesion distance (ILD) applied during point-by-point pulmonary vein (PV) isolation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has never been established. We hypothesized that maximum tolerated ILD may differ between PV regions and may influence long-term ablation outcomes. METHODS: A total of 260 AF patients underwent PV isolation with 3D electroanatomical platform. Postablation, ILD values were classified into 5 groups (6-5.5 mm, 5.5-5.0 mm, 5.0-4.5 mm, 4.5-4.0 mm and <4.0 mm); the number of tags in each group was calculated and correlated with postablation AF recurrence (AFR). All measurements were performed globally for the entire encirclement around each individual PV and regionally for designated PV anatomic segments. RESULTS: Single-procedure freedom from AF was 81% for paroxysmal and 66% for persistent AF at 12 months. Global analysis showed that AFR was not related to median ILD nor the number of lesions within each ILD tag group for any PV. Segmental analysis showed that AFR was not related to median ILD. However, the presence of tags from the 5.5-6.0 mm ILD group located on the posterior aspect of right upper PV (RUPV) correlated with AFR. This was confirmed in a multivariable logistic regression model. CONCLUSIONS: Maximum tolerated ILD of 6.0 mm translated into well-accepted ablation results. However, the study suggests that it may be inadequate at the posterior aspect of RUPV.

ABSTRACT

In the past few decades, several methods concerning optical thin films have been established to facilitate the development of integrated optics. This paper provides a brief depiction of different techniques for implementing optical waveguide thin films that involve chemical, physical, and refractive index modification methods. Recent advances in these fabrication methods are also been presented. Most of the methods developed for the realization of the thin-films are quite efficient, but they are expensive and require sophisticated equipment. The major interest of the scientists is to develop simple and cost-effective methods for mass production of optical thin films resulting in the effective commercialization of the waveguide technology. Our research group is focused on developing a silica-titania optical waveguide platform via the sol-gel dip-coating method and implementing active and passive optical elements via the wet etching method. We are also exploring the possibility of using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) for patterning these films so that the fabrication process is efficient and economical. The recent developments of this platform are discussed. We believe that silica-titania waveguide technology developed via the sol-gel dip-coating method is highly attractive and economical, such that it can be commercialized for applications such as sensing and optical interconnects.

Hydrogels have the properties of solid substances and are useful for medicine, e.g., in systems for the controlled release of drugs or as wound dressings. They isolate the wound from the external environment and constitute a barrier to microorganisms while still being permeable to oxygen. In the current study, hydrogels were formed from concentrated aqueous solutions of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) via electron beam irradiation, with the presence of a crosslinking agent: poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate. The aim of the study was to compare the properties and action of biopolymer CMCS hydrogels with commercial ones and to select the best compositions for future research towards wound-dressing applications. The elasticity of the gel depended on the component concentrations and the irradiation dose employed to form the hydrogel. Young's modulus for the tested hydrogels was higher than for the control material. The Live/Dead test performed on human fibroblasts confirmed that the analyzed hydrogels are not cytotoxic, and for some concentrations, they cause a slight increase in the number of cells compared to the control. The biocompatibility studies carried out on laboratory rats showed no adverse effect of hydrogels on animal tissues, confirming their biocompatibility and suggesting that CMCS hydrogels could be considered as wound-healing dressings in the future. Ionizing radiation was proven to be a suitable tool for CMCS hydrogel synthesis and could be of use in wound-healing therapy, as it may simultaneously sterilize the product.

ABSTRACT

Delirium is a sign of deterioration of homeostasis and worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency, risk factors and prognosis of delirium in patients with COVID-19 in a temporary acute setting hospital. A retrospective cohort analysis of data collected between October 2020 and February 2021 from two temporary acute care hospitals was performed. All consecutive hospitalized patients ≥18 years old with COVID-19 were included. An assessment of consciousness was carried out at least two times a day, including neurological examination. Delirium was identified through retrospective chart review according to DSM-5 criteria if present at least once during hospitalization. Analysis included 201 patients, 39 diagnosed with delirium (19.4%). Delirious patients were older (p < 0.001), frailer (p < 0.001) and the majority were male (p = 0.002). Respiratory parameters were worse in this group with higher oxygen flow (p = 0.013), lower PaO2 (p = 0.043) and higher FiO2 (p = 0.006). The mortality rate was significantly higher in patients with delirium (46.15% vs 3.70%, p < 0.001) with OR 17.212 (p < 0.001) corrected for age and gender. Delirious patients experienced significantly more complications: cardiovascular (OR 7.72, p < 0.001), pulmonary (OR 8.79, p < 0.001) or septic (OR 3.99, p = 0.029). The odds of mortality in patients with COVID-19 presenting with delirium at any point of hospitalization were seventeen times higher.

ABSTRACT

Mixtures of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with chiral ionic liquids (CILs) may find application as active materials for electrically driven broadband mirrors. Five nematic liquid crystal hosts were mixed with twenty three ionic liquids, including chiral ones, and studied in terms of their miscibility within the nematic phase. Phase diagrams of the mixtures with CILs which exhibited twisted nematic phase were determined. Miscibility, at levels between 2 and 5 wt%, was found in six mixtures with cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal host-E7. On the other hand, the highest changes in the isotropization temperature was found in the mixtures with isothiocyanate-based liquid crystal host-1825. Occurrence of chemical reactions was found. A novel chiral binaphtyl-based organic salt [N11116][BNDP] was synthesized and, in reaction to the 1825 host, resulted in high helical twisting power product(s). Selectivity of the reaction with the isothiocyanate-based liquid crystal was found.
