ABSTRACT

Membership as a Fellow in the National Academy of School Nursing (FNASN) is the NASN's highest recognition award. At the 2023 NASN Conference, five new Fellows were inducted and now add FNASN to their credentials. This group of exemplary school nurse professionals contributes to school nursing practice in many ways that crisscross NASN's Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™. They each have chosen unique pathways to provide service. The 2023 NASN Fellows are: Eileen Gavin, New Jersey; Jenny Gormley, Massachusetts; Lynne Meadows, Georgia; Kathy Reiner, Colorado; and Sharonlee Trefry, Vermont. The following article outlines each Fellow's unique path to attaining FNASN.

ABSTRACT

School nurses coordinate student health care for prevention and treatment to remove health barriers to learning and to school attendance. They use a team approach to manage students with chronic conditions as they transition among home, school and healthcare settings, working to develop competent self-care aligned with developmental ages of students. Care coordination ensures the continuum of care is unbroken. Meeting the health needs of low-income students can be challenging, because those students are likely to be uninsured or underinsured and often lack necessary resources, such as transportation, to access primary health care. Care coordination is a tenet of school nursing and to optimally serve low-income students, school nurses form partnerships in the community. One innovative and successful partnership is Healthy Learners, an organization that works with community healthcare providers and school district nurses to connect eligible students to needed healthcare services. Always, the goal is to keep students in school, healthy, and ready to learn.

ABSTRACT

For the 3rd consecutive year the July issue of NASN School Nurse has published this NASN Annual Highlights Report. This 2013 report emphasizes current NASN priorities, discussing the updated strategic plan and providing insight into the accomplishments and strengths of our organization. Carolyn Duff the newly installed NASN president, and Donna Mazyck, NASN executive director collaborated to provide information of significance to NASN membership and stakeholders through the use of an interview format. As always, we encourage members to connect with NASN through a variety of formats outlined in the member center on our website (www.nasn.org).
