ABSTRACT

The authors' purpose in this paper was to examine how the use of the "sad passive" coping style may be related to adolescent self-reported loneliness. Subjects were asked to complete the revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, Peplau, & Cutrona, 1980) to determine self-reported loneliness and the Coping with Loneliness Questionnaire (CLQ; Rubenstein & Shaver, 1980) in order to examine coping styles. We hypothesized that those adolescents whose coping strategies fell into the category of sad passivity described by Rubenstein and Shaver would indicate greater loneliness than those adolescents whose coping strategies fell into other categories. Results indicated that sad passivity was used by both lonely and nonlonely adolescents, but that nonlonely youngsters resorted to this method only temporarily and in preparation for a more active coping style. Lonely teens, on the other hand, appeared to remain in the sad-passive mode to a maladaptive degree. These results were discussed in terms of their importance for theories of adolescent loneliness and for possible intervention strategies.

ABSTRACT

Today, the VHA stands as the country's largest hospital purchasing program, representing hospitals that purchase over $1.5 billion in supplies each year. But not all of that comes through VHA programs, and it is in the relationship between the individual institutions and the VHA system, that the group draws its strength and discovers its limitations. At once highly sophisticated and fiercely independent, the materials managers that make up the VHA program must weigh the significant opportunities inherent in the group's size and scope against the individual demands of their institutions. Mutual understanding leads to consensus and eventually to commitment and out of that process comes a number of highly innovative programs, such as standardization and single sourcing and the VHA Plus private label program, that are helping to make the VHA not simply the country's leading purchasing organization, but its most innovative as well--a true materials management system.

ABSTRACT

Social maladjustment has been related to an external locus of control orientation. It was hypothesized, therefore, that delinquent females would be more external than a control sample. Further, since alienation from others is also associated with maladjustment, it was expected that the delinquents would also prefer greater distance from others. These hypotheses were confirmed with discussion being in terms of implication for rehabilitation of delinquents.
