ABSTRACT

Techniques were developed for automated detection and characterization of dermatoscopic structures, including the pigment network and brown globules. These techniques incorporate algorithms for grayscale shape extraction based on differential geometry developed by Steger, a snake algorithm, and a modification of the region competition strategy of Zhu and Yuille. A novel approach was developed for global segmentation of pigmented lesions, based on stabilized inverse diffusion equations. Procedures for detection of air bubbles and hairs in dermatoscopic images are also reported.

ABSTRACT

Fourteen patients underwent evaluation of the distal radioulnar joint following Galeazzi's fracture. Five of 12 patients who underwent a preoperative magnetic resonance imaging scan of the wrist had evidence of injury to the triangular fibrocartilage complex. These 5 patients also had abnormal intraoperative radiocarpal arthrograms. The amount of radial shortening in the injured forearm was measured prior to surgical treatment. Injury to the distal radioulnar joint appeared to be independent of the amount of radial shortening.

ABSTRACT

An automatic method of inspecting the scaling accuracy of needle-type instrument gauges using a two-stage Hough transform technique is described. The system measures and verifies the relative accuracy of a gauge's response to a specified set of analog input signals. The method does not require that the gauge's position, orientation, or size be known a priori and the algorithm is very suitable for high-speed hardware implementation.

ABSTRACT

This paper introduces a generalization of cellular automata in which each celi is a tape-bounded Turing machine rather than a finite-state machine. Fast algorithms are given for performing various basic image processing tasks by such automata. It is suggested that this model of parallel computation is a very suitable one for studying the advantages of parallelism in this domain.

ABSTRACT

Elongated black objects in black-and-white pictures can be ``thinned'' to arcs and curves, without changing their connectedness, by (repeatedly) deleting black border points whose deletion does not locally disconnect the black points in their neighborhoods. This technique generalizes to gray-scale pictures if we use a weighted definition of connectedness: two points are ``connected'' if there is a path joining them on which no point is lighter than either of them. We can then ``thin'' dark objects by changing each point's gray level to the minimum of its neighbors' gray levels, provided this does not disconnect any pair of points in its neighborhood. Examples illustrating the performance of this technique are given.
