ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Using a structured approach to improvement that integrates methodological frameworks and commonly used improvement tools and techniques allows an improvement team to systematically implement and evaluate an intervention. Authors from one academic medical center will describe our four-step structured improvement approach in the design of a dedicated education unit (DEU) pilot to potentially meet a critical post-COVID-19 workforce need. Using our structured improvement approach, we successfully piloted a DEU with a unit-based clinical educator and 16 nursing students over 26 clinical days and received 13 preintervention surveys from participants. Although the DEU pilot was small with limited data, the structured improvement approach resulted in an organized and systematic way of designing, implementing, and evaluating improvement.

ABSTRACT

The year 2020 features the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. Her legacy is often recalled as simply being "the lady with the lamp" who cared for sick and wounded British soldiers; however, her impact on the nursing profession includes serving as a role model for many leadership behaviors and strategies that have positively impacted the health of communities and populations around the world. Through her tireless endeavors, Nightingale exemplified many leadership roles, including advocate, change agent, interprofessional collaborator, and visionary. The development of effective skills in these leadership roles remains important for all levels of nursing leaders in today's health-care environment. This article showcases Nightingale's leadership in selected leadership roles, and demonstrates her continued impact on contemporary nurses.

ABSTRACT

Nurses with a medical-surgical clinical focus often care for patients with psychiatric and behavioral issues in acute care hospitals. This article describes how hospital staff and nursing and theater department faculty joined forces to develop realistic simulated psychiatric scenarios for use by practicing nurses.

ABSTRACT

Nonpathological cognitive declines occur with aging and negatively affect everyday functioning and reduce quality of life. Many older adults, aware of such cognitive changes, seek ways to bolster their cognitive functioning. Evidence based on the cognitive aging literature supports a number of factors associated with cognitive functioning. These factors include physical exercise, intellectual exercise, nutrition, sleep hygiene, social interaction, and mood and emotional state. These factors can be manipulated and woven together by nurses and other health professionals to develop an easy-to-use, non-invasive cognitive prescription for improving the cognitive health of older adults. An example and directions for developing and implementing cognitive prescriptions are described.
