ABSTRACT

Electrically controlled rotation of spins in a semiconducting channel is a prerequisite for the successful realization of many spintronic devices, like, e.g., the spin-field-effect transistor (sFET). To date, there have been only a few reports on electrically controlled spin precession in sFET-like devices. These devices operate in the ballistic regime, as postulated in the original sFET proposal, and hence need high SOC channel materials in practice. Here, we demonstrate gate-controlled precession of spins in a nonballistic sFET using an array of narrow diffusive wires as a channel between a spin source and a spin drain. Our study shows that spins traveling in a semiconducting channel can be coherently rotated on a distance far exceeding the electrons' mean free path, and spin-transistor functionality can be thus achieved in nonballistic channels with relatively low SOC, relaxing two major constraints of the original sFET proposal.

ABSTRACT

The present longitudinal study examined the reliability of self-reported academic grades across three phases in four subject domains for a sample of 916 high-school students. Self-reported grades were found to be highly positively correlated with actual grades in all academic subjects and across grades 9 to 11 underscoring the reliability of self-reported grades as an achievement indicator. Reliability of self-reported grades was found to differ across subject areas (e.g., mathematics self-reports more reliable than language studies), with a slight yet consistent tendency to over-report achievement levels also observed across grade levels and academic subjects. Overall, the absolute value of over- and underreporting was low and these patterns were not found to differ between mathematics and verbal subjects. In sum, study findings demonstrate the consistent predictive utility of students' self-reported achievement across grade levels and subject areas with the observed tendency to over-report academic grades and slight differences between domains nonetheless warranting consideration in future education research.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To overcome the anterior corneal mosaic (ACM) phenomenon in in vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and to reconstruct undistorted images of the subbasal nerve plexus (SNP), facilitating morphometric analysis in the presence of ACM ridges. METHODS: CLSM was performed in five healthy volunteers. An original image processing algorithm based on phase correlation was used to analyze and reduce motion distortions in volume scan image sequences. Three-dimensional tracing of the SNP was performed to reconstruct images containing only the SNP layer, with nerve fibers clearly visible even in ACM areas. RESULTS: Real-time mapping of the SNP revealed the presence of ridges with K-structures underneath them in all cases. The occurrence of K-structures correlated directly with development of ACM observed by slit lamp and resulted in massive deformation at the level of Bowman's membrane, seriously interfering with examination of SNP structures. The average elevation of ACM ridges was 20.6 µm (range, 8.7-34.0 µm). The novel method presented permitted reconstruction of the SNP layer in regions of ACM. CONCLUSIONS: The described method allows the precise analysis and elimination of motion artifacts in CLSM volume scans, in conjunction with the capability to reconstruct SNP structures even in the presence of severe ACM. The robustness and automation of the described algorithms require ongoing development, but this will provide a sound basis for extended studies of corneal nerve regeneration or degeneration and for use in clinical practice.
