ABSTRACT

The half-time values of tritiated water were explored in eleven hyperthyroid patients and in two hypothyroid ones. For reasons of comparability the numbers are expressed in days per square meter (d/m2) of body surface. Against the estimated 5.4 d/m2 in normal subjects, the hyperthyroids reflected 3.9 +/- 0.66 and the two determinations on hypothyroids were 6.42 and 7.13, respectively. During the study neither diagnostic nor therapeutic procedures were ever postponed. The half-time values are not representative of extreme conditions in hyper- or hypothyroids, but are sufficiently clear to indicate well-defined differences from normal people. The total exposure to radiation for the exploratory procedure was minimal, estimated at less than 12 mrem for the normal standard man.

ABSTRACT

Clearances of 113mIn-EDTA, or 99mTc -DTPA or 131I-iothalamate were compared with 3H-inulin simultaneously in rabbits or dogs. The classical plateau method was explored followed by a second slope in some instances or by the single shot procedure in others. A two-compartmental mathematical model was always employed to compare and calculate. The study suggests that the diverse agents tested are handled following similar homeostatic trends and values, although the intervening membranes may act upon them individually with diffusion rates that may vary in relation to each substance, in particular at a given time interval.

ABSTRACT

In the present study total body water was determined in a group of cardiac patients, using titriated water. The study was performed in a service of internal medicine of an important hospital in Mexico City. Of the 30 patients originally evaluated, only 23 could be considered cardiacs; of these 47.83% had an excess of water, 39.13% had a normal amount and 13.04% were dehidrated. The patients belonged to both sexes and their ages were anywhere between 14 and 82 years. Very often, other aliments or conditions were present which had a bearing on the total body water. The test is innocuous and the bother to the patient is minimal constituting a valuable auxiliary to the clinician.

ABSTRACT

The literature about the half-life of the tritiated water has shown a great variety from one specimen to another. In order to determine the influence of this variations upon metabolism, mass or body surface we studied 16 healthy subjects and one patient with renal failure. We founded that there is a good correlation between the body surface and the biological half-life of the tritiated water in humans. The correlation average was 1.02.
