ABSTRACT

The ability of an organism to respond to nutritional stress can be a plastic character under the action of natural selection, affecting several characteristics, including life history and energy storage. The genus Drosophila (Diptera; Drosophilidae) presents high variability regarding natural resource exploration. However, most works on this theme have studied the model species D. melanogaster Meigen, 1830 and little is known about Neotropical drosophilids. Here we evaluate the effects of three diets, with different carbohydrate-to-protein ratios, on life history (viability and development time) and metabolic pools (triglycerides, glycogen, and total soluble protein contents) of three Neotropical species of Drosophila: D. maculifrons Duda, 1927; D. ornatifrons Duda, 1927, both of the subgenus Drosophila Sturtevant, 1939, and D. willistoni Sturtevant, 1916 of the subgenus Sophophora Sturtevant, 1939. Our results showed that only D. willistoni was viable on all diets, D. maculifrons was not viable on the sugary diet, while D. ornatifrons was barely viable on this diet. The sugary diet increased the development time of D. willistoni and D. ornatifrons, and D. willistoni glycogen content. Thus, the viability of D. maculifrons and D. ornatifrons seems to depend on a certain amount of protein and/or a low concentration of carbohydrate in the diet. A more evident effect of the diets on triglyceride and protein pools was detected in D. ornatifrons, which could be related to the adult attraction to dung and carrion baited pitfall as food resource tested in nature. Our results demonstrated that the evolutionary history and differential adaptations to natural macronutrient resources are important to define the amplitude of response that a species can present when faced with dietary variation.

(AU)

Introduction: Individuals with chronic kidney disease may experience reduced quality of life associated with treatment costs. Objective: To evaluate health-related quality of life and its relationship with financial toxicity in individuals with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Material and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study involving 214 individuals was carried out, with data collected from February to May 2022 at four specialized dialysis clinics in the southern region of Brazil. Sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires, the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity, and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life - Short Form were utilized. Descriptive analysis with absolute and relative frequencies was conducted for sociodemographic and clinical variables, and Pearson correlation was used for financial toxicity and health-related quality of life scores. Results: Four items of the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form questionnaire had an average score below 50, indicating poor quality of life: “General health” (10.75), “Limitations in physical functioning” (29.93), “Burden of kidney disease” (37.76), and “Work status” (39.49), with physical (34.49) and mental (49.19) composite scores. The relationship between financial toxicity and health-related quality of life revealed that a worse financial toxicity score was associated with a greater number of impaired dimensions. There was a significant correlation between financial toxicity, the mental health dimension, and the effects of kidney disease. Conclusion: Participants experienced compromised health-related quality of life, with a positive correlation with financial toxicity. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Para realização do estudo, foram utilizados os instrumentos sociodemográfico e clínico, Comprehensive Score For Financial Toxicity - COST e Kidney Disease Quality Of Life - Short Form -KDQOL-SFTM.

Abstract: The diagnosis of chronic kidney disease often entails changes that force the person to reduce the workday, reducing family income, a situation that can cause a phenomenon called financial toxicity that contributes to a reduction in the quality of life related to health. This is an observational, analytical and correlational study with a cross-sectional quantitative approach, with the aim of investigating the relationship between financial toxicity and the health-related quality of life of people with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Data collection was carried out from February 2022 to May 2022 in a group of dialysis clinics in Curitiba-PR and the Metropolitan Region. The sampling process was probabilistic, but the recruitment was for convenience, according to the inclusion criteria: people with chronic kidney disease, aged 18 years or older and who were on hemodialysis for a period longer than six months (n=214). To carry out the study, the sociodemographic and clinical instruments, Comprehensive Score For Financial Toxicity - COST and Kidney Disease Quality Of Life - Short Form -KDQOL-SFTM were used. Data analysis was performed descriptively with absolute and relative frequencies of the variables of the sociodemographic and clinical characterization of the study population, for the scores of financial toxicity and health-related quality of life, the odds ratio, Bayesian logistic regression models and the analysis of variance method (Anova). The study included 214 people with chronic kidney disease, 54.67% male, 52.80% aged 60 years or older, 53.52% married or in a consensual union, 56.07% had 1 to 3 children, more than half 54.67% had less than 9 years of schooling, 54.97% were retired, 81.75% had some comorbidity in addition to chronic kidney disease, 59.34% had a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease from 1 to 5 years, 88.26% used continuous medication, 69.69% were non-smokers and 72.89% did not drink alcohol. Regarding financial toxicity, the mean total score found, considering all data collection units, was 20.30/44. Females with a monthly family income of at most two minimum wages are more likely to have some degree of financial toxicity (odds ratio: 0,85; 0.76). It was found that in the relationship between COST measures and health-related quality of life, the greater impact of financial toxicity was associated with worse health-related quality of life. Therefore, this study identified the existence of financial toxicity in people with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis and there is also an association of the worst degrees of financial toxicity with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Therefore, measuring financial toxicity can help nursing guide actions to minimize this event.

ABSTRACT

Feed-efficient cattle selection is among the most leading solutions to reduce cost for beef cattle production. However, technical difficulties in measuring feed efficiency traits had limited the application in livestock. Here, we performed a Bivariate Genome-Wide Association Study (Bi-GWAS) and presented candidate biological mechanisms underlying the association between feed efficiency and meat quality traits in a half-sibling design with 353 Nelore steers derived from 34 unrelated sires. A total of 13 Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) were found explaining part of the phenotypic variations. An important transcription factor of adipogenesis in cattle, the TAL1 (rs133408775) gene located on BTA3 was associated with intramuscular fat and average daily gain (IMF-ADG), and a region located on BTA20, close to CD180 and MAST4 genes, both related to fat accumulation. We observed a low positive genetic correlation between IMF-ADG (r = 0.30 ± 0.0686), indicating that it may respond to selection in the same direction. Our findings contributed to clarifying the pleiotropic modulation of the complex traits, indicating new QTLs for bovine genetic improvement.

ABSTRACT

Adolescents and young adult (AYA) oncology care has evolved to address their unique supportive care needs, yet deficiencies remain. We planned a multiphase sequential mixed methods study beginning with focus groups (FGs) with AYAs receiving care at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, to improve supportive care delivery. Herewith, we report on the preliminary findings from first phase of project and outline future expected goals. Our findings suggest four major themes identified from FG discussion with AYAs: (1) having peer-driven support, (2) incorporating hybrid approach to information delivery, (3) integrating general practitioners in AYAs care, and (4) providing AYAs-specific supportive care programs.
