ABSTRACT

In recent years, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) became more and more popular in industrial and consumer electronics applications. Unevenly distributed liquid crystals (LC) and the presence of organic contaminations in the LC layer, for example from the display sealant, can cause display defects and therefore lower the display quality. This work describes the development of a fast and easy screening method for display samples by laser ablation coupled to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (LA-APCI-MS). With this ambient technique, LC components as well as sealant materials, which are one of the main sources for display contaminations, can be detected simultaneously using spatial resolutions down to 100 µm. Minimal sample preparation is needed for this method and exact masses can be acquired by using an Orbitrap mass analyzer. By LA-APCI-MS, nineteen different LCs and five different sealant materials were detected as pure substances as well as on commercially available LCDs. In addition, a principle component analysis (PCA) was used to differentiate between LCs and sealant ions in the complex data matrix.

ABSTRACT

The dimensionality of self-assembled nanostructures plays an essential role for their properties and applications. Herein, an understanding of the transition from weakly to strongly coupled layers in soft matter systems is provided involving in-plane organized π-conjugated rods. For this purpose, bolaamphiphilic triblock molecules consisting of a rigid biphenyl core, polar glycerol groups at the ends, and a branched (swallow-tail) or linear alkyl or semiperfluoroalkyl chain in lateral position have been synthesized and investigated. Besides weakly coupled lamellar isotropic (LamIso ), lamellar nematic (LamN ) and sliding lamellar smectic phases (LamSm ), a sequence of three distinct types of strongly coupled (correlated) lamellar smectic phases with either centered (c2mm) or non-centered rectangular (p2mm) lattice and an intermediate oblique lattices (p2) were observed depending on chain length, chain branching and degree of chain fluorination. This new sequence is explained by the strengthening of the layer coupling and the competition between energetic packing constraints and the entropic contribution of either longitudinal or tangential fluctuations. This example of directed side chain engineering of small generic model compounds provides general clues for morphological design of two-dimensional and three-dimensionally coupled lamellar systems involving larger π-conjugated molecular rods and molecular or supramolecular polymers, being of actual interest in organic electronics and nanotechnology.

ABSTRACT

A universal building block for the convergent synthesis of a wide variety of different T-shaped ternary amphiphiles was developed and used for the synthesis of a series of new liquid-crystalline materials composed of a rigid biphenyl core with polar glycerol groups at both ends and linear or branched alkyl chains in a lateral position. In addition, compounds with bulky achiral (2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy, adamantane-1-carboxylate, benzoate) or chiral (menthyl or cholesteryl) substituents attached to the end of the lateral alkyl chain were also investigated. In all cases the lateral chains were connected to the aromatic core by an ether linkage. The effect of the ether linking unit on mesophase stability and mesophase type is discussed with respect to conformational effects. The liquid-crystalline phases were investigated by polarizing microscopy, calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction of surface aligned samples. Upon enlarging the lateral chains a series of different polygonal cylinder phases was observed, which were replaced by lamellar phases and a non-cylinder hexagonal columnar phase by further increasing the size of these substituents. Remarkably, only pentagonal, hexagonal, and giant hexagonal cylinder phases could be observed, whereas mesophases composed of cylinders with a smaller number of sides are missing. No distinct chirality effects were observed for the menthyl- and cholesteryl-substituted compounds. However, the rodlike shape of the polycyclic cholesteryl core leads to a unique phase structure combining an organization of the alicyclic cholesteryl cores perpendicular to the layer planes and the aromatic biphenyl cores parallel to the layer planes.
