ABSTRACT

A new procedure for classifying brain structures described by SPHARM is presented. We combine a dimension reduction technique (functional principal component analysis or functional independent component analysis) with stepwise variable selection for linear discriminant classification. This procedure is compared with many well-known methods in a novel classification problem in neuroeducation, where the reversal error (a common error in mathematical problem solving) is analyzed by using the left and right putamens of 33 participants. The comparison shows that our proposal not only provides outstanding performance in terms of predictive power, but it is also valuable in terms of interpretation, since it yields a linear discriminant function for 3D structures.

ABSTRACT

A dataset of a fit assessment study in children is presented. Anthropometric measurements of 113 children were obtained using a 3D body scanner. Children tested a t-shirt of different sizes and a different model for boys and girls, and their fit was assessed by an expert. This expert labeled the fit as 0 (correct), -1 (if the garment was small for that child), or 1 (if the garment was large for that child) in an ordered factor called Size-fit. Moreover, the fit was numerically assessed from 1 (very poor fit) to 10 (perfect fit) in a variable called Expert evaluation. This data set contains the differences between the reference mannequin of the evaluated size and the child׳s anthropometric measurements for 27 variables. Besides these variables, in the data set, we can also find the gender, the size evaluated, and the size recommended by the expert, including if an intermediate, but nonexistent size between two consecutive sizes would have been the right size. In total, there are 232 observations. The analysis of these data can be found in Pierola et al. (2016) [2].

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a multigrid motion compensation video coder based on the current human visual system (HVS) contrast discrimination models is proposed. A novel procedure for the encoding of the prediction errors has been used. This procedure restricts the maximum perceptual distortion in each transform coefficient. This subjective redundancy removal procedure includes the amplitude nonlinearities and some temporal features of human perception. A perceptually weighted control of the adaptive motion estimation algorithm has also been derived from this model. Perceptual feedback in motion estimation ensures a perceptual balance between the motion estimation effort and the redundancy removal process. The results show that this feedback induces a scale-dependent refinement strategy that gives rise to more robust and meaningful motion estimation, which may facilitate higher level sequence interpretation. Perceptually meaningful distortion measures and the reconstructed frames show the subjective improvements of the proposed scheme versus an H.263 scheme with unweighted motion estimation and MPEG-like quantization.
