ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the presence of dyslipidemia in blood biochemistry of patients with idiopathic tinnitus and to point out that dyslipidemia poses a risk to coronary artery disease. METHODS: Blood lipoprotein values and age and gender were compared between 158 patients with idiopathic tinnitus and 160 patients without tinnitus. Results were statistically evaluated. RESULTS: In total, more than half of 318 patients had high blood cholesterol levels. In both groups, the cholesterol average was 215 mg/dl. Furthermore, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels were higher than normal. However, no statistically significant difference was determined in the comparison of Cholesterol, HDL, and LDL levels in both groups (p<0.05). However, serum triglyceride levels of patients with tinnitus were when compared with the control group, a statistically significant difference was found (p=0.001); The numbers of men and women were approximately close to each other and the number of patients between the ages of 50 and 60 was higher. The average age is 53. As a result, the risk of life-threatening coronary heart disease increases, as the majority of patients with tinnitus are in the middle age group and have high lipoprotein values. CONCLUSION: In patients presenting with the complaint of tinnitus, high serum lipoprotein values may not be directly related to tinnitus. However, it should be remembered that the presence of dyslipidemia may affect coronary vessels and lead to coronary artery diseases. However, a significant correlation was found between high serum triglyceride levels and tinnitus. In addition, if the patient has dyslipidemia, it will be healthy to treat dyslipidemia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of neonatal hearing screening in our hospital with the help of literature and to question and reveal the risk factors to gain healthy individuals and to raise awareness for all health workers and the public who are interested in this subject. METHODS: A total of 16,388 newborn infants were evaluated between October 2009 and January 2018. All newborns were screened with transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) test. Risk factors were investigated. The test repetition and auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements were performed on newborns who could not pass the TEOAE test and the newborns in the risky group after 15 days. RESULTS: A total of 116 newborns (0.7%) were suspected to have hearing loss. Twenty-seven newborns (0.16%) were found to be in intensive care unit. Twelve newborns (0.07%) had permanent hearing loss. Then, in order: 9 newborns (0.05%) had received phototherapy and 7 newborns (0.04%) were born to consanguineous marriages. In addition, 3 newborns (0.02%) had a low birth weight and 1 newborn (0.006%) had a history of fever. CONCLUSION: Screening tests should be performed in all newborns for early detection of hearing loss. Even though frequency of hearing loss is higher in newborns with risk factors, the treatment should be started within 6 months, the latest, and newborns should be referred for rehabilitation and training.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Pilomatrixoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) is a benign soft tissue tumour arising from dermis or subcutaneous tissue which should be considered in differential diagnosis of preauricular lesions especially when skin fixation is present. CASE REPORT: Twenty-three year old male referred to our clinic with complaint of left preauricular swelling over 18 months which enlarged and became painful in the last 2 months. Because the lesion showed signs of infection, surgery was planned after medical therapy was completed. FNAB suggest pleomorphic adenoma as preliminary diagnosis. US or MRI showed no specific feature. TREATMENT AND PROGNOSIS: Total excision, superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve sparing was performed after regression of infectious signs. Postoperatively no recurrence was detected. CONCLUSION: Pilomatrixomas are benign tumours but have diagnostic difficulties according to clinical and cytologic findings. This rare lesion should be kept in mind to avoid misdiagnosis as malign parotid tumours, particularly in the presence of skin change.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiological and clinicopathological characteristics of primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (pENL) patients, focusing on treatment and survival outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between October 2003 and March 2012, 802 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were diagnosed and treated in two different cancer centers of Southern Turkey. RESULTS: pENL, constituted 12.4% (100/802) of all NHL studied during this period. Median age of the patients was 56 years (range 17-87 years) and the male: female distribution was 3:2. Eighty-five of 100 patients (85%) were in stage I/II, 9/100 (9%) in stage III, whereas 6/100 (6%) were in stage IV. Head and neck constituted the most common site (51/100, 51%), followed by gastrointestinal tract (GIL) (37/100, 37%), and cerebrum (CL) (5/100, 5%). Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) was the most common histological type, observed in 53% of patients, followed by marginal zone extranodal lymphoma (13%). Most of patients (76%) received a CHOP containing regimen. Complete remission (CR) were achieved in 71% of patients. The median follow-up duration of all patients was reported as 37.6 months (range, 0.8-165 months). This period was reported as 137.5 months (range, 117.5- 1578.6 months) in gastrointestinal lymphoma (GIL) patients, 119.0 months (range, 91.8-146.1 months) in head and neck lymphoma (HNL) patients, and 18.4 months (range, 12.6-24.1 months) in cerebral lymphoma (CL) patients. CONCLUSIONS: Head and neck, and the gastrointestinal tract were the two most common extranodal sites observed. Histologically DLBC accounted for the majority of cases. Most patients were on earlier stages, had low-low intermediate IPI scores and had a favorable prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Alar cartilage consists of a medial crus, middle crus and lateral crus. The lateral crus is an important aesthetic and functional structure of the nose. A 32-year-old male patient with concave lateral crura was operated by the authors. An open rhinoplasty with a dorsal approach to the septum is preferred. The nasal bones harvested from the hump, which is an autogenous graft trimmed and sutured on both concave lateral crura as an overlay camouflage grafts. Satisfactory result was achieved.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer can lead to alterations in quality of life of the patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes in quality of life of the female patients who had undergone surgical treatment for breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 250 female patients (breast-preserving surgery (BPS), n=27, 11%; modified radical mastectomy (MRM), n=194, 77%, and simple mastectomy (SM), n=29; 11%) aged between 28-55 years (47.4±6.4 yrs) were included in the study. Patient information, demographic characteristics, income, and treatment modalities applied were recorded. Validated Turkish versions of EORTC QLQ-C30, and EORTC-BR23 questionnaires were used for all patients. RESULTS: Breast-preserving surgery has a more favorable impact on general well-being, physical role, cognitive, psychological, and social functions, and symptom scale scores. When the identical parameters were taken into consideration, relatively favorable outcomes of BPS on the patients were observed relative to mastectomized patients. Besides, though not statistically significant, BPS has more patient-friendly effects on sexual function and sexual satisfaction in comparison with mastectomy. Patients with advanced stage disease and elder patients had more unfavorable health related quality of life (HRQoL) scores than younger patients, and those in their early stages of breast cancer. CONCLUSION: Quality of life of BPS patients is less adversely affected relative to mastectomized patients. In the decision-making process, quality of life should be taken into consideration.

ABSTRACT

The lateral crus plays a significant role in the aesthetic appearance of the nose. Excessive concavities of the lower lateral crura can lead to heavy aesthetic disfigurement of the nasal tip and to insufficiencies of the external nasal valve. The lateral crus of the alar cartilage may also cause a concavity of the alar rim and even collapse of the alar rim in severe cases. Surgical techniques performed on the lateral crus help to treat both functional and aesthetic deformities of the lateral nasal tip. We present a reverse plasty technique for the lateral crus, and we evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of the technique.
