ABSTRACT

Recombinant human nerve growth factor (rhNGF) secreted by insect cells was purified by ion-exchange and reversed-phase chromatography to near homogeneity. The N-terminus of the secreted molecule was analogous to that of mouse salivary gland NGF. In its native conformation, the insect cell produced rhNGF molecules were homodimers consisting of 120 amino acid polypeptide chains. Mature rhNGF was found not to be significantly glycosylated (less than 0.08 mol of N-acetylglucosamine/mol of protein). The rhNGF was homogeneous with regard to molecular weight and amino acid sequence. Isoelectric focusing resolved the rhNGF into one major and one minor component. Because rhNGF from insect cells can be obtained in large quantities, purified to near homogeneity, and is similar to natural NGF with regard to physicochemical properties and biological activity, it is suitable for further evaluation in animal models as a therapeutic molecule for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

ABSTRACT

This is a retrospective analysis out of 49 patients suffering from enterocutaneous fistulae. 25 patients received total parenteral nutrition. The enteral feeding of 17 patients was completed by parenteral nutrition: 7 patients were fed perorally. 13 fistulae (27%) healed up by conservative treatment, 10 underwent surgery and 8 patients had persistent fistulae. The total mortality rate came up to 41%. Total parenteral nutrition can be the only treatment or is an effective adjunct to supplement the surgical management of enterocutaneous fistulae.

ABSTRACT

In Hungary the control of immunobiological preparations has been regulated by legal orders since 1938. In the meantime the pertinent rules have been modifed several times, to keep them abreast with current development. The authority of state control has been vested into the Vaccine Control Department of the National Institute of Public Health (OKI), which in this capacity has maintained an intensive collaboration with the producer of immunobiological preparations, the HUMAN Institute of Serobacteriological Production and Research (HUMAN). As a result, several important vaccine preparations (pox, DPT, DT, tetanus, typhoid and BCG vaccines) employed in compulsory immunization programmes have been improved considerably in respect of safety and efficiency, on the basis of laboratory tests, controlled field trials and epidemiological observations, described in detail in this review.
