ABSTRACT

This experimental assessment was carried out to study the viscoelastic performance of crude oil-xanthan emulsions employing a RheoStress RS100 rheometer. Crude oil with a concentration range of 0−75% by volume was used to prepare the oil-gum emulsions. Two xanthan gums of Sigma and Kelzan were added in the emulsions with concentration ranges of 0−104 ppm. The linear viscoelastic ranges of all the tested oil-gum emulsions were found in the range of 0.1−10 Pa. Thus, the experimental tests were completed within the linear viscoelastic range of 1 Pa. The complex modulus increased gradually and steadily with frequency and gum concentration for all the examined emulsions. The addition of crude oil into the lighter xanthan concentration of <103 ppm provided almost the same behavior as the xanthan solution, whereas the presence of crude oil within the higher xanthan concentrations significantly stimulated the measured values of the complex modulus. For lower gum concentrations of up to 1000 ppm, oil concentration displayed no effect on both the storage and loss moduli, whereas for gum concentrations higher than 1000 ppm, both moduli increased gradually with crude oil concentration.

ABSTRACT

The experimental study of the Creep-recovery examination is necessary to understand the viscoelastic behavior of crude oil-Xanthan gum emulsions. The experimental measurements and analysis of these tests were completed using RheoStress RS100 under controlled stress CS-mode. Rheometers with CS-mode allow for a useful and direct technique for the experimental measurements of creep and recovery stages. This investigation covers a wide range of crude oil concentration of 0-75% by volume, Xanthan concentration range of 0-104 ppm, and two types of Xanthan gums are used and investigated. The creep-recovery measurements of crude oil-Xanthan gums emulsions were extensively investigated. It was important to find the linear viscoelastic range for the examined crude oil-Xanthan gum emulsions. The experimental measurements and analysis of the creep-recovery examinations showed that the linear viscoelastic range was up to 1 Pa. The experimental investigation showed that the higher the concentration of the used gum and crude oil, the lower the compliance of the emulsions. For the Xanthan concentrations of less than 103 ppm, the crude oil-gum emulsion exhibited viscous behavior. However, for the Xanthan concentration of higher than 103, the examined emulsions displayed viscoelastic behavior.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective database review. OBJECTIVE: Posterior/posterolateral lumbar fusion (PLF) is an effective treatment for a variety of spinal disorders; however, variations in surgical technique have different complication profiles. The aim of our study was to quantify the frequency of various complications in patients undergoing PLF with and without human recombinant bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP2). METHODS: We queried the orthopedic subset of the Medicare database (PearlDiver) between 2005 and 2011 for patients undergoing PLF procedures with and without rhBMP2. Complication and reoperation rates were analyzed within 1 year of the index procedure. Complications assessed include: acute renal failure, deep vein thrombosis, dural tear, hematoma, heterotopic ossification, incision and drainage, cardiac complications, nervous system complications, osteolysis, pneumonia, pseudarthrosis, pulmonary embolism, radiculopathy, respiratory complications, sepsis, urinary retention, urinary tract infection, mechanical, and wound complications. Chi-square analysis was used to calculate the complication differences between the groups. RESULTS: Our data revealed higher overall complication rates in patients undergoing PLF with rhBMP2 versus no_rhBMP2 (76.9% vs 68.8%, P < .05). Stratified by gender, rhBMP2 males had higher rates of mechanical complications, pseudarthrosis, and reoperations compared with no_rhBMP2 males (P < .05), whereas rhBMP2 females had higher rates of pseudarthrosis, urinary tract infection, and urinary retention compared with no_rhBMP2 females (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Our data revealed higher overall complication rates in PLF patients given rhBMP2 compared with no_rhBMP2. Furthermore, our data suggests that rhBMP2-associated complications may be gender specific.

ABSTRACT

This is an investigation of the effect of paper-yellowing inhibitors on the rheological, colloidal, and interfacial properties of paper-coating liquids and the associated changes in the liquid surface microstructure. In addition to rheological measurements, we measured the zeta potential and imaged the surface microstructure of coating liquids by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using an advanced Pt/C replica technique. The zeta potential is related to the concentration of added inhibitors. The images reveal interparticle structuring with increasing concentration of inhibitors. The structuring is related to the interaction between the coating liquids and the inhibitors. It was also found that the viscosity and the elastic modulus increased with inhibitor concentration. The significant changes in mixture properties due to the additives show the importance of the rheological and surface characterization of liquids and the ensuing effect on the corresponding engineering process.
