ABSTRACT

Monoarthritis, defined as the inflammation of a joint, may be either acute or chronic and arise from a variety of causes. Septic arthritis is responsible for the highest rates of morbidity and mortality. The most common cause is the presence of microcrystals. A clinical history and careful physical examination are of great help in establishing the cause. Bilateral radiographs of the joints are essential. Unless contraindicated, arthrocentesis should be undertaken to establish the etiologic diagnosis (AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective. The aim of the present article is to examine the existing relationship between fibromyalgia and psychological and psychiatric disorders. Fibromyalgia is a disease that involves difficult to treat chronic pain that is closely related to psychological and psychiatric disorders, of which anxiety and depression are the most common. The pathophysiological mechanisms of this relationship are not well known, but a number of studies have been conducted in an attempt to explain this relationship. Material, methods and results. A literature review has been made on all the studies carried out that attempt to explain this relationship, as well as a review of the aetio-pathogenic mechanisms common to these pathologies. Conclusions. Fibromyalgia is a disease that involves chronic pain and is associated with psychiatric illness. This association may be causal, a comorbidity or secondary to this condition. It also has a negative influence on the disease, delaying the improvement of the patient (AU)

ABSTRACT

In this study, new DNA markers were explored for the flounder Platichthys flesus. cDNA and genomic sequences of the genes encoding the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-deshydrogenase (GAPDH), the cytosolic creatine kinase (CK), the prostaglandin D synthase (PGDS) and the betaine homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT) were characterized. The tumour suppressor p53 gene structure was already described. A PCR-SSCP (Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism) analysis was finally conducted to study the genetic polymorphism of different populations of flounders collected along the French Atlantic coast. Four highly contaminated French estuaries (Seine, Vilaine, Loire and Gironde) were sampled and compared to a reference estuary (Ster) to explore possible selective effect of the environment on specific allelic frequencies. Our results showed that two loci p53 and PGDS, could be potential markers of chemical stress: p53A allele frequency increased in contaminated systems compared to the reference system. In the Vilaine estuary, PGDS polymorphism could be related to pesticide stress.

ABSTRACT

The author reveals and comments two letters written by the surgeon Louis Seutin and discovered in 1994. They were sent in February 181 6 and July 1817 to lieutenant Ferdinand Doignon, a native from Tournai. Circumstances which created Seutin's friendship for lieutenant Doignon in 1813, during the campaign of Saxony of the Great Army, are described. These two letters are different by their tone. Consideration is given to the periods and places in which they were written. Their significance in Seutin's biography is enlightened through explanatory comments.

ABSTRACT

Major General Harry G. Armstrong was a well known personality in aviation medicine. Most people, especially the younger generation, recall only his public image as a scientist wholly involved in his research and as a man of great authority. Dr. Evrard recounts some of his memories of this great man in an effort to bring the true personality of Major General Harry G. Armstrong to light.
