ABSTRACT

We experimentally demonstrate resonance of first-order vector vortex beams (VVB) with a triangular optical cavity. We also show that, due to their symmetry properties, the VVBs commonly known as radial and azimuthal beams do not resonate at the same cavity length, which could be explored to use the triangular resonator as a mode sorter. In addition, an intracavity Pancharatnam phase shifter (PPS) is implemented in order to compensate for any birefringent phase that the cavity mirrors may introduce.

ABSTRACT

This work describes the new facility for applied nuclear physics at the University of Sao Paulo, mainly for irradiation of electronic devices. It is a setup composed of a quadrupole doublet for beam focusing/defocusing plus multiple scattering through gold foils to produce low intensity, large-area, and high-uniformity heavy-ion beams from 1H to 107Ag. Beam intensities can be easily adjusted from 102 particles cm2/s to hundreds of nA for an area as large as 2.0 cm2 and uniformity better than 90%. Its irradiation chamber has a high-precision motorized stage, and the system is controlled by a LabViewTM environment, allowing measurement automation. Design considerations and examples of use are presented.

ABSTRACT

The Streptococcus agalactiae bacteria is a potent agent which causes outbreaks of bacterial diseases in fish. The stress caused by management and poor environmental quality makes tilapia susceptible to infections, including by bacterium. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of the Nile tilapia immunized with hyperimmune serum against S. agalactiae subsequently challenged with homologous strain of the same bacteria. After determining the DL 50 of S. agalactiae, 36 tilapias were distributed in 4 aquariums, 2 for the control group and 2 for the group via coelomic, inoculated with the DL 50 for anti-S. agalactiae antibodies production. On the 21st and 28th day blood was collected for the obtainment of hiperimmune serum used in passive transference. Then, 30 tilapias were distributed in 3 aquariums submitted to 3 treatments (GI: control; GII: immunized with inactivated-serum; GIII: immunized with non-inactivated serum)...

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out with groups of extractivists of mangrove oysters in the estuary of Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil, between the years 1999 and 2007 with the objective to evaluate and compare trends in the sustainability of this activity, in a multidimensional and integrated way, in social, economic, ecological, technological and ethical dimensions, using the method RAPFISH. The different groups had distinct trends related to sustainability and the social, technological and ethical dimensions had more influence on trends in sustainability than the ecological and economic dimensions. The group with the best performance in the sustainability assessment was Mandira, due to advances promoted by local social organization. On the other hand, the Porto Cubatão group showed the worst performance, once this is very recent group in the extractivism of oysters. The RAPFISH proved to be a useful tool for data assessment.

ABSTRACT

Melatonin is one of the main sources of mitochondrial protection and its protective effects are equal or even better if compared with several consecrated antioxidants. Furthermore, the activation of specific melatonin receptors triggers several cellular pathways that improve the oxidoreduction and inflammatory cellular state. The discovery of the melatoninergic machinery in placental cells was the first step to understand the effects of this indoleamine during pregnancy. In critical points of pregnancy, melatonin has been pointed as a protagonist and its beneficial effects have been shown as essential for the control of trophoblastic function and development. On the contrary of the plasmatic melatonin (produced in pineal gland), placental melatonin does not vary according to the circadian cycle and acts as an autocrine, paracrine, intracrine, and endocrine hormone. The important effects of melatonin in placenta have been demonstrated in the physiopathology of pre-eclampsia with alterations in the levels of melatonin and in the expression of its receptors and synthetizing enzymes. Some authors suggested melatonin as a biomarker of pre-eclampsia and as a possible treatment for this disease and other obstetric pathologies associated with placental defect and increases in oxidative stress. This review will approach the beneficial effects of melatonin on placenta homeostasis and consequently on pregnancy and fetal health.

ABSTRACT

Due to its prominent role in major excretory pathways, the kidney is particularly sensitive especially to toxicity for antimicrobials drugs. Storage of these drugs in the renal cortex, their effect on renal cells, have consequences on the renal function, and then reabsorbed by renal tubules induce nephrotixicity. Our objective was to show the renal morphopatological alterations induced by gentamicin through the histochemical methods of routine periodic acid de Schiff (PAS) staining and imunohistochemical staining for the expression of the protein P53, which is considered as a marker for cellular apoptosis. This allows the early detection of tubular lesions. The renal morphopathologic findings were cell apoptosis, basal membrane interruption, mesangial proliferation cells, decreased Bowman's space. This result clearly shows that gentamicin administration induces renal morphopatological alterations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of prenatal ultrasound measurement of anteroposterior renal pelvis diameter (APD) to discriminate between significant uropathy and idiopathic renal pelvis dilatation. METHODS: One-hundred-and-three neonates who were found to have fetal renal pelvis dilatation, defined as presence of an APD > or = 5 mm, underwent systematic investigation for uropathies and were prospectively followed. An ultrasound scan was performed after the first week of postnatal life and all infants underwent a voiding cystourethrogram. Neonates with an APD larger than 10 mm underwent renal scintigraphy. Ultrasound scans, clinical examination and laboratory reviews were scheduled at 6-month intervals. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curves were constructed to determine the best cut-offs for APD to identify renal units with significant uropathy as well as those requiring surgical intervention. Significant uropathy was defined as the presence of well-established urinary tract abnormalities or when there was abnormal renal scintigraphy. RESULTS: The estimated area under the curve for APD was 0.900 (95% CI, 0.841-0.942) indicating excellent power to discriminate between idiopathic pelvis dilatation and significant uropathy. The sensitivity and specificity for the 7.5 mm cut-off point were 97.9% and 40.6%, respectively. To identify infants who required surgical intervention, the calculated area under the curve was 0.953 (95% CI, 0.908-0.980). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that measurement of APD is an excellent test to identify fetuses with significant uropathy, as well as those requiring postnatal intervention.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Thiamphenicol, an aminic derivate of hydrocarbilsulfonil propandiol, was used for the treatment of 1,171 chancroid bearing patients. Each patient was medicated with 5.0 g of granulated thiamphenicol, orally, in a single dose, and was reevaluated 3, 7 and 10 days after the treatment. Ten patients (0.89%) did not respond to the proposed treatment. 133 patients presented healed ulcers after 3 days of treatment, 976 patients healed chancres on the seventh day after the treatment, and 39 patients took 10 days to present healed chancres. The results of this study indicate that the rate of patients that were cured, the low incidence of side effects, and the practicality of administration make of thiamphenicol an excellent choice for the treatment of chancroid.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Breast-conserving surgery and definitive radiation as an alternative to mastectomy is a well-accepted practice. However, there is limited information addressing the extent of surgical resection. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcome of patients treated with local excision or quadrantectomy, followed by definitive radiation with particular emphasis on local-regional control and cosmetic results. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1978 and 1989, 425 patients with Stage I and II breast cancer underwent conservative surgery followed by definitive radiation. Fifty-four patients had a local excision and 371 had a quadrantectomy. Median follow-up was 42 months. Axillary dissection (levels I/II) was performed in 317 patients, and of these 126 patients had positive axillary lymph nodes. Radiation consisted of 4500-5000 cGy to the breast with Co60 or 4 MV photons, plus a boost to the tumor site (356/425 patients) for a total dose of 6000-6500 cGy. Treatment of the regional lymph nodes was given to patients with undissected or inadequately dissected axillas and usually to patients with multiple positive lymph nodes. Of the patients with positive lymph nodes, 46% received systemic chemotherapy. RESULTS: The 5-year actuarial freedom from local-regional recurrence rates for patients treated with local excision and quadrantectomy followed by definitive radiation were 92% and 93%, respectively (p = 0.7). The 5-year actuarial survival rates for local excision and quadrantectomy were as follows: overall (83% and 82%; p = 0.7), cause-specific disease-free (74% and 71%; p = 0.9), and distant disease-free (82% and 76%, p = 0.4). Estimated 10-year results are also presented. Cosmetic analysis required a minimum follow-up of 5 years. In the local excision, 77% of the patients had excellent-good result, compared to 53% following quadrantectomy (p = 0.03). Excluding patients who received chemotherapy, the excellent-good scores were 76% and 57%, respectively (p = 0.1). The most unfavorable cosmetic results were associated with quadrantectomy followed by radiation with boost dose and chemotherapy, excellent-good in 22%. CONCLUSION: Conservative surgery consisting of local excision or quadrantectomy resulted in comparable local-regional control, overall, disease-free and distant disease-free survival, although cosmetic results were superior in the local excision group.

ABSTRACT

Intending to provide new parameters to be used in Triatomines' Taxonomy, vectors of Chaga's Disease and to amplify a large range of knowledge about this species, a study of the structure of the egg and external morphology of the five nymphal instars was done. The eggs show under optical microscope (M.O.), the chorium's surface of the body and the operculum formed by poligonal areas, clearer under scanning electronic microscope (MEV). The apex of the third rostrum segment in all 5 instars nymphs, show 1 + 1 invaginated and elongated structures and the apical portion of the second tarsal segment presents a group of more or less numerous, very long, delicated and golden hairs.

ABSTRACT

Eighty-two male patients with acute gonococcal urethritis were given a single oral dose of 2.5 g of granulated thiamphenicol dissolved in water, and the results of treatment were evaluated after 48-72 hr and one week. Of the 76 patients who returned for the first follow-up examination, 75 (98.7%) no longer had Neisseria gonorrhoeae in urethral smears or cultures. Five of these patients did not return for the second follow-up examination, and another four who did return were found to be reinfected as a result of reexposure. Of the remaining 67 patients, 66 (98.5%) no longer had N. gonorrhoeae in urethral smears or cultures. Thus, the overall success rate among the 71 patients who completed the study (with the four cases of reinfection considered instances of failure of therapy) was 93%. The ease of administration, absence of adverse reactions, low failure rate, and low incidence of residual urethral secretions (4.5%) justify the use of thiamphenicol as the drug of choice for the treatment of acute gonococcal urethritis in male patients.
