ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Integration of the neuromuscular system is required for maintaining balance and adequate voiding function. Children with enuresis have delayed maturation of the motor cortex, with changes in the sensory and motor systems. Along with various alterations, including the genetic, hormonal, behavioral, and sleep disturbances, and neuromotor and sensory deficits associated with nocturnal enuresis (NE) in children and adults, a consistent alteration in the posture of children with NE has been observed in the current practice. Because posture and the balance control system are strongly connected, this study aimed to investigate posture and balance in children and teenagers with NE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 111 children with enuresis were recruited to the enuretic group (EG) and 60 asymptomatic children made up the control group (CG). The participants were divided into two age subgroups: (A) 7-11 years old, N = 77 for EG/A, N = 38 for CG/A; and (B) 12-16 years old, N = 34 for EG/B, N = 22 for CG/B. Balance was assessed using an electronic force plate (100 Hz) to calculate the area of the center of pressure (COP) displacement. The COP is the point that results from the action of vertical forces projected onto the force plate. Sensory integration was analyzed using a 60-s trial with the subject standing under four conditions: (1) eyes open, stable surface; (2) eyes closed, stable surface; (3) eyes open, unstable surface; (4) eyes closed, unstable surface. Posture was assessed by placing reflective anatomical landmarks on the anterior superior iliac spine, the posterior superior iliac spine, the greater trochanter, and lateral malleolus. A photograph was taken while the subject stood quietly. The angles were obtained from landmark connections using software to assess the following posture variables: pelvic ante/retroversion and pelvic ante/retropulsion. RESULTS: The EG showed a greater area of COP displacement compared with the CG under all four sensory conditions and both subgroups, except for EG/B in condition 3. Regarding posture, EG showed higher pelvic anteversion angles than CG. CONCLUSIONS: Enuretic children showed forward inclination of the pelvis and had worse balance compared with control children.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated whether repeated administration of recombinant adeno-associated virus type 5 (rAAV5) to the airways induces inflammatory processes in the lungs of BALB/c-mice, with mechanical and histologic changes. Saline was instilled intratracheally in the control group, and rAAV5-green fluorescence protein (GFP) (4x10(11)particles) in the virus group (VR). These groups were subdivided into four subgroups: one dose analyzed 3 weeks later (VR1d3w) and two doses analyzed 1 (VR2d1w), 2 (VR2d2w) and 3 weeks (VR2d3w) after the second dose. Lung morphometry, mechanical parameters, airway responsiveness, rAAV5-GFP transduction and the expression of inflammatory cytokines were investigated. No significant differences in lung mechanics, airway responsiveness, and morphometry were observed. Re-administration of rAAV5 vector resulted in a decrease in GFP mRNA expression in the VR2d3w group. There was no evidence of inflammatory response or apoptosis in any group. rAAV5 did not induce an inflammatory process, mechanical or morphometric changes in the lungs. AAV5 may be an appropriate vector for lung gene therapy.

ABSTRACT

Recent progress in growing and characterizing quartz-like materials of the trigonal system class 32 has been reported by several groups. The promising perspective for bulk acoustic wave frequency control applications indicates the potentiality of employing these materials for SAW applications as well. This paper reports results of investigations focused on SAW orientations of langasite (LGS), gallium phosphate (GaPO(4)), and langanite (LGN), both singly and doubly rotated cuts. Among the characteristics explored, major attention is paid to the temperature coefficient of delay (TCD), the electromechanical coupling coefficient (K(2)), and the power flow angle (PFA). Contour graphs are plotted based on our calculated results and show the regions in space in which low TCD and high K(2 ) can be obtained; they also exhibit the associated PFA and phase velocity characteristics. The influence of different sets of material constants is addressed. The spatial investigation performed shows that there are promising orientation regions in these materials at which zero or reduced TCD (<10 ppm/ degrees C) and PFA are obtained. Additional attractive characteristics for SAW applications have been observed: values of K(2) a few times higher than the K(2) of quartz ST-X, thus finding applications in larger bandwidth devices; variation of the TCD with respect to temperature, which is comparable to the variation found for quartz ST-X and less than that for zero TCD Li (2)B(4)O(7) cuts like 45 degrees X-Z and (0 degrees 78 degrees 90 degrees ); and phase velocity values circa 13 to 26% smaller than the phase velocity of quartz ST-X thus allowing a reduction in size for intermediate frequency device applications.

ABSTRACT

We have treated 10 patients suffering from kala-azar in Brazil with Amphocil (amphotericin B cholesterol dispersion) at a dose of 2 mg/kg/d for 5 d, following an earlier study in which this dosage for 7 d was found to cure all of 9 patients, with no relapse during 12 months. In the present study, all patients demonstrated initial resolution of disease. Parasites were absent upon bone marrow re-aspiration 2 weeks after therapy; no spleen extended beyond the costal margin 2 months after therapy; white blood cell counts, platelet counts, and serum levels of albumin rapidly returned to normal. Although one patient relapsed at 5 months, 8 of the other 9 patients had spleens of normal size (undetectable on deep palpation) at 12 months after therapy. Fever, sometimes accompanied by increased respiratory rate, occurred on the first day of drug infusion in 8 of 10 patients and was more severe in patients < 6 years old. Pre-medication with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (diclofenac potassium) before the next 4 infusions protected against this side effect in 5 of 6 patients. The results of this and our previous study suggest that the most appropriate regimen of Amphocil for kala-azar is 2 mg/kg/d for 7 d, with pre-medication each day, in patients aged > 5 years.
