ABSTRACT

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a globally cultivated leguminous crop. Fusarium wilt (FW), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli (Fop), is a significant disease leading to substantial yield loss in common beans. Disease-resistant cultivars are recommended to counteract this. The objective of this investigation was to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers associated with FW resistance and to pinpoint potential resistant common bean accessions within a core collection, utilizing a panel of 157 accessions through the Genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach with TASSEL 5 and GAPIT 3. Phenotypes for Fop race 1 and race 4 were matched with genotypic data from 4740 SNPs of BARCBean6K_3 Infinium Bea Chips. After ranking the 157-accession panel and revealing 21 Fusarium wilt-resistant accessions, the GWAS pinpointed 16 SNPs on chromosomes Pv04, Pv05, Pv07, Pv8, and Pv09 linked to Fop race 1 resistance, 23 SNPs on chromosomes Pv03, Pv04, Pv05, Pv07, Pv09, Pv10, and Pv11 associated with Fop race 4 resistance, and 7 SNPs on chromosomes Pv04 and Pv09 correlated with both Fop race 1 and race 4 resistances. Furthermore, within a 30 kb flanking region of these associated SNPs, a total of 17 candidate genes were identified. Some of these genes were annotated as classical disease resistance protein/enzymes, including NB-ARC domain proteins, Leucine-rich repeat protein kinase family proteins, zinc finger family proteins, P-loopcontaining nucleoside triphosphate hydrolase superfamily, etc. Genomic prediction (GP) accuracy for Fop race resistances ranged from 0.26 to 0.55. This study advanced common bean genetic enhancement through marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection (GS) strategies, paving the way for improved Fop resistance.

BACKGROUND: MOSKI KIT® is a fun tool designed to interest children for prevention and management of malaria. This study was carried out with the objective to assess the short- and long-term impacts of this tool on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of school children, and on the transmission of the knowledge received at the household level as well. METHOD: The study took place in elementary schools in the city centre (with relatively low endemicity) and in the Niayes area (at high risk of anopheline and malaria) in the Dakar region of Senegal. The various schools chosen for this study were divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention schools were also divided into two subgroups, a full package subgroup and another partial package. During this study three surveys were conducted, the first one before exposure to the MOSKI KIT®, the second one a week later and the third a year later. For the control schools only one survey was conducted and at the same time than the third for the intervention schools. Two household surveys (a week and a year after exposure) were also conducted for the intervention schools against one for the control schools. RESULTS: Before sensitization, the proportion of school children with a grade above or equal to the average was 50% for the complete package subgroup (CPS) and 53% for the partial package subgroup (PPS). A week later, these proportions were 69% and 71%, respectively for the complete and PPSs. A year later, they were 99.4% for the CPS, 98.1% for the PPS and 99.5% for the control group; The number of children who spoke to their parents about malaria was greater in intervention schools than that of control schools. They were 46.63% and 32.58%, respectively in intervention and control schools. CONCLUSION: The MOSKI KIT, has enabled an increase of the knowledge of school children about malaria in the short term and favoured its retention in the long term. However, its impact was not felt on their attitudes and practices.

ABSTRACT

Inadequately controlled postoperative pain impacts patients' functional recovery and may affect the quality of life after surgery. Our multinational, cross-sectional study conducted online between November 2017 and January 2018 surveyed anaesthetists' conformity with established postoperative pain control guidelines and looked at pain assessment, dissemination of information to patients, staff training and creation and use of treatment protocols. Of the 170 respondents, only six applied postoperative pain management recommendations. The proportion of respondents who reported regular staff training; the regular provision of pre-operative information to patients; the existence and use of written protocols; and the number conducting at least one pain assessment a day was not just suboptimal, but embarrassingly low.

BACKGROUND: Lower reproductive tract infections in women are important causes of morbidity but can also lead to complications and sequelae. This study aimed to establish the prevalence and risk factors of lower genital tract infections among women of reproductive age in Dakar (Senegal). METHODS: This was a prospective study conducted in 6 maternity hospitals from July to November 2015. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 49 years and presented at health facilities with signs and symptoms of genital infection. Consenting individuals who met the inclusion criteria were recruited for the study. RESULTS: During the reporting period, 276 patients were enrolled. According to the laboratory results, the prevalence of any genital infection was 69.6% (192 of 276). The most common vaginal infections were bacterial vaginosis (39.5%) and vaginal candidiasis (29%), with the third most common cause, trichomoniasis, trailing behind in terms of prevalence (2.5%). Among the microorganisms responsible for cervical infections, Ureaplasma urealyticum was the most frequent (27.5%), followed by Mycoplasma hominis (14.5%), Chlamydia trachomatis (4.7%), and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (1.1%). Multivariate analysis showed that young women and women with low levels of education were at increased risk for vaginal/cervical infections. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed a high prevalence of bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis and suggests that health care providers should increase awareness and communication to improve vaginal hygiene practices. If infection with Trichomonas vaginalis, C trachomatis or N gonorrhoeae is suspected, we also recommend systematically performing laboratory diagnostic confirmation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of the WHO syndromic algorithm in the management of vaginal discharge among women of reproductive age in Dakar. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of consecutive female patients (aged 18-49 years) presenting with vaginal symptoms at six selected study sites in Dakar; of these, 276 patients were included in the analysis. Vaginal and cervical swab samples were collected and analysed to establish an aetiological diagnosis of any infection. Syndrome-based diagnosis was compared with the laboratory results to evaluate its accuracy based on sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values. The degree of agreement between the two approaches was assessed using the Cohen's kappa concordance analysis. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of vaginal infections was 56.9% (157/276); 5.4% (15/276) of the patients had cervical infection. Using the syndromic approach, 51% of patients were correctly managed for Trichomonas vaginalis (TV)/Gardnerella vaginalis (GV); 61% for Candida albicans (CA) and 54% for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT)/Neisseria gonorrhoea (NG) infections. Consequently, 31% of patients with TV/GV, 51% with CA and 53% with CT/NG infections would have missed treatment. Further, the kappa value was <0.20, indicating that there was no agreement or only slight agreement between the syndromic approach and laboratory-based diagnosis. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the limitations of the applicability of the WHO syndromic approach in settings with low prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and calls for affordable and accurate rapid tests for STIs.
