ABSTRACT

Emerging and re-emerging parasitic diseases can cause significant economic burdens at national and global levels. However, governments often underestimate or ignore these diseases, especially in developed countries. This retrospective, case-oriented study analyzed parasitic diseases reported in Taiwan between 2001 and 2018. One hundred and thirty-two eligible clinical profiles of Taiwanese patients obtained from the NCBI, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases and local journals according to age, sex, source of infection, symptoms, risk factors, and geographical regions were analyzed. The analysis results showed that the number/frequency of cases caused by nematodes (46.97%) or protozoa (37.88%) was significantly higher than that of trematodes (9.85%) or cestodes (5.30%) (p < 0.0001). Northern Taiwan (46.97%) had a significantly higher rate than Southern Taiwan (33.33%), Central Taiwan (8.33%), and Eastern Taiwan (5.30%) (p < 0.05). The 15-65 age group (68.94%) had a significantly higher rate than the 65-90 age group (22.73%) and the 0-15 age group (8.33%) (p < 0.0001). Males (70.46%) had a significantly higher number/frequency of cases than females (29.54%) (p < 0.0001). People who acquired the infection through the food/soil route (32.58%) or who had a low immune status (32.58%) had a higher rate than travel-related infections (15.15%) (p < 0.001). The present study showed that emerging/reemerging parasitic infections continue to be of great concern to the lives and health of Taiwanese citizens and, if ignored, will threaten the health of the Taiwanese people; therefore, the delineation of preventive measures by health authorities is urgently warranted.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading global cause of death, with atherosclerosis as the primary cause. Chronic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and the role of molecules like nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species are crucial in this context. Our previous research indicated that cilostazol and ginkgo biloba extract could enhance the ability of endothelial cells to dissolve blood clots, but the effects of cilostazol on monocytes remain unexplored. Method: This study utilized peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 10 healthy donors, treated ex vivo with cilostazol. RNA-sequencing, over-representation analysis, xCell stromal cell analysis, and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis were employed to investigate the gene expression changes and biological pathways affected by cilostazol treatment. Results: The study identified specific gene sets and pathways that were enriched or reduced in response to cilostazol treatment, providing insights into its effects on monocytes and potential therapeutic applications in CVD. The analysis also revealed the potential impact of cilostazol on the stromal cell compartment, further broadening our understanding of its multifaceted role. Conclusion: The findings offer a nuanced understanding of the advantages and mechanisms of cilostazol in CVD, uncovering novel therapeutic targets and strategies to enhance the clinical application of cilostazol and contributing to the broader implications of this therapy in cardiovascular health.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the expansive effects of pterygomaxillary disjunction (PMD) in surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) surgery using a meta-analysis approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study conducted a comprehensive literature search across five databases: PubMed, Scopus, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane, adhering to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Dental alterations were assessed using either cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) or dental casts, while skeletal changes were exclusively measured from CBCT scans. We analysed the dentoskeletal changes between PMD +/- groups and conducted a within-group comparison. The primary focus of the results was on the mean differences observed in pre- and post-operative measurements. RESULTS: Dental expansion was larger in the PMD+ group but not statistically significant. Skeletal expansion showed a significantly larger expansion in the posterior region in the PMD+ group (P = .033). Without PMD, anterior palatal expansion was significantly larger (P = .03), and the buccal tipping of posterior teeth was also significantly larger (P = .011) to achieve acceptable dental expansion outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Both PMD +/- groups of SARME surgery can achieve satisfactory dental expansion outcomes. However, bone expansion and tooth inclination are also important factors that influence orthodontic treatment and post-expansion stability. By reducing the bony resistance with PMD, larger posterior palatal expansion and more parallel bony expansion are observed. In contrast, without PMD, there is smaller palatal expansion and greater tooth inclination in the posterior region. This could potentially lead to compromised periodontal conditions following expansion.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Functional decline frequently occurs in older adults in hospitals. The aim of this project was to promote evidence-based strategies for physical activity to prevent functional decline in hospitalized older adults in a medical center in southern Taiwan. METHODS: This project was guided by the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework. Seven audit criteria were derived from a JBI evidence summary and a baseline audit involving 25 nurses and 30 hospitalized older adults was conducted to compare current practice with best practice recommendations. The JBI Getting Research into Practice (GRiP) tool was used to identify barriers to implementation, and strategies were developed to overcome those barriers. A follow-up audit was conducted to measure any changes in compliance. RESULTS: After implementing the strategies, the pass rate of nursing staff improved in the physical activity knowledge test, rising from 56% to 88%. Compliance of nursing staff with providing physical activity instructions using evidence-based guidelines to hospitalized older adults reached 80%. The incidence of functional decline among hospitalized older adults decreased from 36.7% to 20%. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this best practice implementation project suggest that initiating physical activity as early as possible for hospitalized older adults once their medical condition has stabilized can help prevent functional decline. Aims: The aims of the study were to examine the differential item functioning (DIF) of the Tendency of Avoiding Physical Activity and Sport Scale (TAPAS) among three subgroups (gender, weight status, and region) and to test the construct and concurrent validities of the scale. Methods: Using an online survey, university students (608 Taiwanese and 2319 mainland Chinese) completed the TAPAS. Rasch analysis examined if all the 10 TAPAS items fitted the same construct and displayed no substantial DIF across three subgroups: gender (male vs. female), weight status (overweight vs. non-overweight), and region (Taiwan vs. China). Concurrent validity was examined using the scores on the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ) and Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS). Results: All TAPAS items, except for Item 10 ("Prefer to participate in physical activity in a more private setting"), fitted the same construct. None of the TAPAS items displayed DIF in any of the subgroups except for Item 10 across participants from Taiwan and China (DIF contrast = -1.41). Conclusion: The TAPAS can appropriately assess the tendency to avoid physical activity and sport among both Taiwanese and mainland Chinese university students. However, Item 10 may need to be further examined.

ABSTRACT

Diphyllobothriosis is an infectious disease caused by the consumption of raw freshwater or marine fish containing larvae of broad tapeworms (Diphyllobothriidae). In the present study, we critically reviewed all cases of human diphyllobothriosis reported from Taiwan, including unpublished reports from hospitals in Taipei. Genotyping based on mitochondrial DNA marker (cox1) confirmed that two of the recent cases were caused by Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis, which is not native to Taiwan and was probably imported with Pacific salmon infected with larvae of D. nihonkaiensis. The causative species previously reported in Taiwan could not be definitively confirmed. However, considering the distribution of Dibothriocephalus latus, which is not endemic in Taiwan, past cases diagnosed as D. latus are questionable.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of physical activity are well-known to prevent multiple long-term health conditions. Physical appearance and weight-related stigma may influence individuals' decision to engage in physical activity and sport. Therefore, the present study examined the psychometric properties of a newly developed instrument, the Tendency to Avoid Physical Activity and Sport Scale (TAPAS), using modern test theory. METHODS: A total of 2319 university students were recruited from mainland China and they completed the TAPAS. Rasch analysis was used to examine the TAPAS' rating scaling functioning, test unidimensionality, item hierarchy, ceiling and floor effects, and differential item functioning (DIF). Moreover, the concurrent validity of the TAPAS was examined using the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ), Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS), and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Unidimensionality was confirmed except for one item. Items corresponding to attitude toward physical activity were more easily adopted compared to items corresponding to actual behavioral aspects. No ceiling and floor effects were found. No DIF existed in the TAPAS items. The TAPAS was strongly correlated with both the WSSQ and WBIS, but not BMI. CONCLUSION: The study showed that overall, the TAPAS has robust psychometric properties. However, future research needs to address the misfit item and explore the feasibility of applying the TAPAS to other populations including wider ethnic groups, age ranges, and life stages.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: A central venous catheter (CVC)-a type of central venous access device (CVAD)-is the most common intervention for critical illnesses. Obstruction of the CVC can lead to fatal consequences. Thus, it is critical to maintain catheter lumen patency. The CVC occlusion rate in a hospital in Taiwan was 33%. This project aimed to decrease the CVC occlusion rate in acute care. METHODS: This project was conceptually informed by the JBI Evidence-Based Model of Healthcare, in particular, the conceptualization of evidence implementation as inclusive of context analysis, implementation, and evaluation of outcomes using evidence-based quality indicators. As part of the seven-phase implementation process, we used audit and feedback in a pre- and post-test design to measure baseline compliance. Based on the initial audit, we developed an implementation strategy responsive to the identified gaps in compliance. We then undertook a final audit to measure changes in compliance to evaluate our implementation effects. The JBI software, PACES, and the situational analysis software, GRiP, were used for data collection and implementation planning. There were six evidence-based criteria, with a sample size of 30 nurses for each criterion. The team carried out the project from September 2022 to January 2023. RESULTS: Post-implementation audit compliance rates increased to 100% for the following criteria: the organization had a standardized flushing and locking solution protocol (0%), the CVAD lumen was locked upon completion of the final flush (10%), a single-dose system was used for flushing and locking the CVAD (60%), and preservative-free 0.9% sodium chloride was used to flush the CVAD (60%). Furthermore, the CVC occlusion rate decreased from 33% to 5%. CONCLUSIONS: The project successfully decreased the rate of CVC occlusion and increased the competence of nurses in acute care settings. The implementation of best practices in clinical care should focus on leadership, cross-department coordination, education, and innovation.

BACKGROUND: Prior psychometric evidence of the Physical Resilience Instrument for Older Adults (PRIFOR) showed good criterion-related validity, concurrent validity, known-group validity, predictive validity, and internal consistency. However, it is unclear whether older patients with different treatment diagnoses interpret the PRIFOR similarly. AIMS: This study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the PRIFOR scores among different treatment diagnoses of older patients. METHODS: We recruited 413 hospitalized older patients with a medical diagnosis and 207 with a surgical diagnosis in a 1343-bed tertiary-care medical center in Taiwan. Data analyses included Rasch models, Principal Components Analysis (PCA), and Pearson correlations. RESULTS: The Rasch analyses showed that all PRIFOR items were embedded within their belonged constructs, reflecting good construct validity and unidimensionality. Person and item separation reliability support the internal consistency of the studied samples and PRIFOR items. However, six PRIFOR items were found to have meaningful differential item functioning (DIF) problems among treatment diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS: The PRIFOR is a solid measurement and can be used for monitoring the status of older adults' physical resilience. However, because six items were found to have meaningful DIF among treatment diagnosis groups, future studies should consider designing specific items for different patient populations to assess their needs in physical resilience.

BACKGROUND: The immunoglobulin E (IgE) response to Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection increases in the host. This study analyzed the IgG and IgE responses detected in different body fluids of A. cantonensis-infected mice. METHODS: BALB/c (high susceptibility), CBA (medium), and C57BL/6 and C57BL/10 (resistance) strain mice were used in this study. The levels of IgM, IgG, and IgE in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from infected mice were compared. A. cantonensis-reactive antigens from BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice CSF were also analyzed. RESULTS: Antibodies against fifth-stage larvae (L5) antigens increased in mice CSF, particularly IgE, relate to worm rejection and the susceptibility of different mouse strains. The increased IgE level in BALB/c mice CSF is lower than that from others, suggesting IgE response in brain is more important than that in serum. Anti-L5 and anti-excretory/secretory (ES) antigen IgE and IgG responses in CSF were analyzed. In addition, the antibody-dependent eosinophil-mediated cytotoxicity induced by anti-excretory/secretory (ES) antigen antibodies may be the reason of severe brain inflammation in infected BALB/c mice. IgE and IgG antibodies against a 105 kDa protein of L5 antigen was detected at week 3 post-infection in C57BL/6 mice and week 5 post-infection in BALB/c mice. We suggest that 105 kDa protein is related with the antibody response of A. cantonensis-infected mice. CONCLUSION: We found that IgE antibodies in mice CSF against L5 antigens related to worm rejection in mice brains. This study may help to identify specific angiostrongyliasis markers that can be applied for clinical diagnosis and treatment in future.

IMPORTANCE: Routine measurements used in clinical settings can foster evidence-based interventions and show the treatment effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of occupational therapy services for health outcomes, as determined by modified self-care and mobility items of the Continuity Assessment Record and Evaluation Tool, also known as Section GG. DESIGN: Retrospective and longitudinal. Data were obtained from medical records at four time points over 1 yr. SETTING: The study took place at a pro bono, faculty-led clinic. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-one client charts were reviewed; 64 (70%) clients met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled. INTERVENTIONS: Interventions were provided by registered occupational therapists and entry-level occupational therapy students under supervision. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Self-care and mobility function were measured using modified GG0130 and GG0170 items from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Quality Reporting Program; three additional functional items were added. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, Version 2® (SF-36v2) was used to evaluate clients' quality of life at intake. RESULTS: Self-care and mobility composites significantly improved throughout the 1-yr intervention period. The additional functional composite significantly improved during the first 6 mo. Clients' scores on the physical function subdomain of the SF-36v2 were significantly related to their self-care, mobility, and additional functional items. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Faculty-led clinics can improve the occupational performance of clients in need of occupational therapy services, particularly in the areas of self-care and mobility, which have previously been identified as top priorities for clients. What This Article Adds: This study addressed health disparities in unique and effective ways. By using objective measures of functional mobility and self-care, the study provides robust evidence of the faculty-led clinic's impact in providing underserved and uninsured communities with effective client-centered occupational therapy services.

ABSTRACT

Allergic asthma is an inflammatory lung disorder, and mast cells play crucial roles in the development of this allergic disease. Norisoboldine (NOR), the major isoquinoline alkaloid present in Radix Linderae, has received considerable attention because it has anti-inflammatory effects. Herein, the aim of this study was to explore the antiallergic effects of NOR on allergic asthma in mice and mast cell activation. In a murine model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma, oral administration at 5 mg/kg body weight (BW) of NOR produced strong reductions in serum OVA-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, airway hyperresponsiveness, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) eosinophilia, while an increase in CD4+Foxp3+ T cells of the spleen was detected. Histological studies demonstrated that NOR treatment significantly ameliorated the progression of airway inflammation including the recruitment of inflammatory cells and mucus production by decreasing levels of histamine, prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-6, and IL-13 in BALF. Furthermore, our results revealed that NOR (3 âˆ¼ 30 µM) dose-dependently reduced expression of the high-affinity receptor for IgE (FcεRI) and the production of PGD2 and inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-6, IL-13, and TNF-α), and also decreased degranulation of bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) activated by IgE/OVA. In addition, a similar suppressive effect on BMMC activation was observed by inhibition of the FcεRI-mediated c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway using SP600125, a selective JNK inhibitor. Collectively, these results suggest that NOR may have therapeutic potential for allergic asthma at least in part through regulating the degranulation and the release of mediators by mast cells.

Lateral ankle instability (LAI) compromises the normal kinematics of the ankle, affecting activities of daily living. In vitro kinematics of ankles with LAI during single-plane motions are available, but the active control stability of these motions remains unclear. The current study measured the 3D ankle kinematics during unresisted single-plane motion tests using a bi-plane fluoroscope with a CT model-based 2D/3D registration method in 12 patients with LAI and 14 healthy peers. The coupling of the kinematic components at the talocrural and subtalar joints was quantified by the path difference between the forward and return paths of the coupled motion. Significantly increased path differences were found in the subtalar dorsiflexion/plantarflexion and inversion/eversion components during internal/external rotation tests (p < 0.05). During inversion/eversion, significantly reduced tibiocalcaneal ranges of motion and the path differences in the talocrural and subtalar dorsiflexion/plantarflexion components were noted (p < 0.05). The current results suggest that chronic LAI had compromised control stability at the subtalar joint during internal/external rotation tests and a conservative motion control strategy with significantly reduced ranges of motion to maintain good control of out-of-plane motion components in response to direct challenges of the anterior talofibular ligament during inversion/eversion tests. The current results also suggest that, compared to kinematic patterns of individual components, the path difference of the coupled motion may serve as a better measure of the motion control stability of the ankle in differentiating LAI from healthy controls.

ABSTRACT

During an ichthyoparasitological survey in 2017-2019, six species of acanthocephalans were found among Taiwan's freshwater (Cypriniformes: Xenocyprididae, Cyprinidae) and marine fishes (Scombriformes: Scombridae, Trichiuridae; Anabantiformes: Channidae; Carangaria/misc: Latidae): Micracanthorhynchina dakusuiensis (Harada, 1938), Rhadinorhynchus laterospinosus Amin, Heckmann et Ha, 2011, Pallisentis rexus Wongkham et Whitfield, 1999, Longicollum sp., Bolbosoma vasculosum (Rudolphi, 1819), and one new species, Micracanthorynchina brevelemniscus sp. n. All species are morphologically characterised and illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The finding of R. laterospinosus, P. rexus and B. vasculosum is the first record for these species in Taiwan. Micracanthorhynchina brevelemniscus is similar to Micracanthorhynchina motomurai (Harada, 1935) and M. dakusuiensis in proboscis armature but differs from M. motomurai by larger eggs (53-59 × 15-16 µm vs 40 × 16 µm) and by the number of cement glands (6 vs 4) and from M. dakusuiensis by shorter body length (2.2-2.9 mm vs 4.0 mm in males and 2.9-4.1 mm vs 7.6 mm in females), by the location of the organs of the male reproductive system (from level of the posterior third of the proboscis receptacle in M. brevelemniscus vs in the posterior half of the trunk in M. dakusuiensis), and by length of lemnisci (lemnisci shorter than the proboscis receptacle vs lemnisci longer than the proboscis receptacle). Phylogenetic analyses of almost complete 18S rRNA gene revealed paraphyly of the family Rhadinorhynchidae suggested in previous studies. Micracanthorhynchina dakusuiensis and M. brevelemniscus formed a strongly supported cluster, which formed the earliest diverging branch to the rest of the rhadinorhynchids and transvenids.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers have faced unprecedented circumstances throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but previous research only minimally addresses the caregivers' burden. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between caregiver burden, psychological stress, satisfaction with support, and fear of COVID-19 in caregivers of patients with stroke during the pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study with total of 171 caregivers of patients with stroke in a community hospital in Taiwan. All participants completed the Zarit Burden Interview, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21), satisfaction of support survey, and Fear of COVID-19 Scale. Pearson correlations were used to examine the bivariate correlations between study variables. Then, with the control of demographic confounders, a multiple linear regression model was applied with significant variables to construct and explain caregiver burden. RESULTS: The proposed model significantly explained the caregiver burden of caregivers of patients with stroke. Specifically, the caregiver burden was negatively correlated with satisfaction with family support, but positively with psychological distress and the fear of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: Caregivers of patients with stroke will suffer a greater burden if they have lower satisfaction with family support, experienced higher psychological distress, and perceived more fear of the COVID-19 pandemic. Health professionals must address these concerns, support caregivers, and enhance available resources.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The most widely used instruments to assess food addiction - the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) and its modified version (mYFAS 2.0) - have not been validated in a Taiwanese population. The present study compared the psychometric properties between the Taiwan versions of YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 among university students. Methods: An online survey comprising the YFAS 2.0, mYFAS 2.0, Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) were used to assess food addiction, self-stigma, and physical activity. Results: All participants (n = 687; mean age = 24.00 years [SD ± 4.48 years]; 407 females [59.2%]) completed the entire survey at baseline and then completed the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 again three months later. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 both shared a similar single-factor solution. In addition, both the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 reported good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.90 and 0.89), good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.71 and 0.69), and good concurrent validity with the total scores being strongly associated with the WSSQ (r = 0.54 and 0.57; p < 0.01), and less strongly associated with BMI (r = 0.17 and 0.13; p < 0.01) and IPAQ-SF (r = 0.23 and 0.25; p < 0.01). Discussion: Based on the findings, the Taiwan versions of the YFAS 2.0 and mYFAS 2.0 appear to be valid and reliable instruments assessing food addiction.

ABSTRACT

DNA mutagenesis during antibody affinity maturation has potentially oncogenic or autoimmune outcomes if not tightly controlled as it is in mammalian germinal centers. Cold blooded vertebrates lack germinal centers, yet have a functional Ig gene mutator enzyme, Aicda. In fish there are clusters of Aicda+ cells encircled by pigmented 'melano-macrophages' and we test the hypothesis that these clusters are functionally analogous to germinal centers. Sequenced IgH VDJ repertoire libraries from individual isolated clusters showed evidence of B-cell clonal expansion and VDJ somatic hypermutation. Construction of Ig clonal lineage trees revealed that unlike surrounding lymphoid tissue, each cluster is dominated by a few B-cell VDJ clonotypes having hundreds of mutated variants. Recruitment of B-cells to the clusters appears to be ongoing, as there are additional Ig clones having smaller lineages. Finally, we show evidence for positive selection for replacement mutations in regions encoding the antigen contact loops, but not in the framework regions, consistent with functional antibody modification. Melano-macrophages appear to trap the Ag used for post-mutation B-cell selection, performing a role analogous to the follicular dendritic cells of mammalian germinal centers. These findings provide insights into the evolution of the affinity maturation process, the improvement of fish vaccines and possibly also the workings of atypical ectopic germinal centers generated in several human diseases.

ABSTRACT

JAK/STAT plays a key role in regulating uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) infection in urothelial cells, probably via antimicrobial peptide (AMP) production, in diabetic patients with urinary tract infections. Whether multiple pathways regulate AMPs, especially lipid-carrying protein-2 (LCN2), to achieve a vital effect is unknown. We investigated the effects of an LCN2 pretreatment on the regulation of the JAK/STAT pathway in a high-glucose environment using a bladder cell model with GFP-UPEC and phycoerythrin-labeled TLR-4, STAT1, and STAT3. Pretreatment with 5 or 25 µg/mL LCN2 for 24 h dose-dependently suppressed UPEC infections in bladder cells. TLR-4, STAT1, and STAT3 expression were dose-dependently downregulated after LCN2 pretreatment. The LCN2-mediated alleviation of UPEC infection in a high-glucose environment downregulated TLR-4 and the JAK/STAT transduction pathway and decreased the UPEC-induced secretion of exogenous inflammatory interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8. Our study provides evidence that LCN2 can alleviate UPEC infection in bladder epithelial cells by decreasing JAK/STAT pathway activation in a high-glucose environment. LCN2 dose-dependently inhibits UPEC infection via TLR-4 expression and JAK/STAT pathway modulation. These findings may provide a rationale for targeting LCN2/TLR-4/JAK/STAT regulation in bacterial cystitis treatment. Further studies should explore specific mechanisms by which the LCN2, TLR-4, and JAK/STAT pathways participate in UPEC-induced inflammation to facilitate the development of effective therapies for cystitis.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the association of localized periodontitis with proteinuria in 1281 military young adults in Taiwan. Localized periodontitis was classified as Healthy/Stage I (N = 928) or Stage II/III (N = 353). Stage 2 chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 60-89 mL/min/1.73 m2. Proteinuria was defined as protein levels of 2+ or 3+ on the dipstick test. Multiple logistic regression analysis with adjustments for age, sex, body mass index, remaining teeth number and other potential covariates were used to determine the association between localized Stage II/III periodontitis and dipstick proteinuria in patients with and without CKD. Localized stage II/III periodontitis was associated with a higher risk of dipstick proteinuria [odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval: 1.89 (1.04-3.42)], but not with stage 2 CKD. However, the association between localized stage II/III periodontitis and dipstick proteinuria was observed only in patients with stage 2 CKD [OR: 3.80 (1.56-9.27)], while the association was null in participants without stage 2 CKD [OR: 1.02 (0.42-2.45)]. Our findings suggest that among young adults, especially those with a mildly impaired eGFR, localized periodontitis might contribute to acute or chronic kidney injury, which manifests as proteinuria.
