ABSTRACT

This study integrates hollow microneedle arrays (HMNA) with a novel jellyfish-shaped electrochemical sensor for the detection of key biomarkers, including uric acid (UA), glucose, and pH, in artificial interstitial fluid. The jellyfish-shaped sensor displayed linear responses in detecting UA and glucose via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperometry, respectively. Notably, the open circuit potential (OCP) of the system showed a linear variation with pH changes, validating its pH-sensing capability. The sensor system demonstrates exceptional electrochemical responsiveness within the physiological concentration ranges of these biomarkers in simulated epidermis sensing applications. The detection linear ranges of UA, glucose, and pH were 0~0.8 mM, 0~7 mM, and 4.0~8.0, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of the HMNA-integrated jellyfish-shaped sensors in real-world epidermal applications for comprehensive disease diagnosis and health monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Giant septic pulmonary artery aneurysms (PAAs) are rare but important entities, with few cases having been reported worldwide. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial in the management of such cases. We report a 56-year-old female patient presenting with fatigue, nausea and vomiting who was first diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and developed life-threatening giant infectious PAA secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection and Actinomyces odontolyticus sepsis. The patient did not develop any specific symptoms, and enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a massive PAA of 5.6 × 4.9 cm in size at the left pulmonary hilar with normal pulmonary artery (PA) pressures. After multidisciplinary discussion and after considering the critical condition accompanied by sepsis increased the risk of surgery, endovascular treatment was the first therapy of choice for the patient; nevertheless, the patient ultimately opted for hospice care. This case report aims to raise awareness of PAAs, which are rare but potentially fatal complications of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 pneumonia and Actinomyces odontolyticus sepsis.

ABSTRACT

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the most serious causes of disability and loss of work capacity of younger individuals. Although PNS has a certain degree of regeneration, there are still challenges like disordered growth, neuroma formation, and incomplete regeneration. Regarding the management of PNI, conventional methods such as surgery, pharmacotherapy, and rehabilitative therapy. Treatment strategies vary depending on the severity of the injury. While for the long nerve defect, autologous nerve grafting is commonly recognized as the preferred surgical approach. Nevertheless, due to lack of donor sources, neurological deficits and the low regeneration efficiency of grafted nerves, nerve guide conduits (NGCs) are recognized as a future promising technology in recent years. This review provides a comprehensive overview of current treatments for PNI, and discusses NGCs from different perspectives, such as material, design, fabrication process, and composite function.

ABSTRACT

Cysteine (Cys) distribute widely in organisms as the crucial components of proteins, and play important roles in pathophysiological processes of human body. Low level of Cys might induce hepatic injury, edema and growth retardation, while superfluous level of Cys is found to be closely relevant to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. In this work, a novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe PFQ-C was developed for highly selective detection of Cys in living cells and mice by utilizing the cyclization removal reaction between acrylate group and Cys. The superior sensitivity (limit of detection, 0.036 µM), NIR emission (655 nm), large Stokes shift (135 nm) and low cytotoxicity of the probe highlight its broad potential for future clinical applications. The response mechanism of the probe towards Cys was clarified by spectroscopy, chromatography and theoretical calculation. In addition, results of fluorescence imaging of cells and mice revealed the good performance of the probe for monitoring the distributions and variations of Cys activity in vivo, which is very useful for the researches on diseases associated with Cys.

ABSTRACT

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the most common neurological diseases. Recent studies on nerve cells have provided new ideas for the regeneration of peripheral nerves and treatment of physical trauma or degenerative disease-induced loss of sensory and motor neuron functions. Accumulating evidence suggested that magnetic fields might have a significant impact on the growth of nerve cells. Studies have investigated different magnetic field properties (static or pulsed magnetic field) and intensities, various magnetic nanoparticle-encapsulating cytokines based on superparamagnetism, magnetically functionalized nanofibers, and their relevant mechanisms and clinical applications. This review provides an overview of these aspects as well as their future developmental prospects in related fields.

ABSTRACT

Simultaneous detection of uric acid and glucose using a non-invasive approach can be a promising strategy for related diseases, e.g., diabetes, gout, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease. In this study, we have proposed a dual-function wearable electrochemical sensor for uric acid and glucose detection in sweat. The sensor with a four-electrode system was prepared by printing the ink on a common rubber glove. CV and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the prepared sensor's electrochemical sensing performance. The sensors exhibited the linear range from 0 to 1.6 mM and 0 to 3.7 mM towards uric acid and glucose electrochemical sensing in phosphate-buffered solution, with the corresponding limit of detection of 3.58 µM and 9.10 µM obtained, respectively. Moreover, the sensors had shown their feasibility of real sample sensing in sweat. The linear detection range for uric acid (0 to 40 µM) and glucose (0 to 1.6 mM) in the sweat can well cover their concentration range in physiological conditions. The prepared dual-function wearable electrochemical sensor features easy preparation, fast detection, high sensitivity, high selectivity, and the practical application potential in uric acid and glucose sensing.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Functional lung volume (FLV) obtained from computed tomography images was a breakthrough for lung imaging and functional assessment. We compared the accuracy of the FLV measurement method and the segment-counting (SC) method in predicting postoperative pulmonary function. METHODS: A total of 113 patients who underwent two thoracoscopic surgeries were enrolled in our study. We predicted postoperative pulmonary function by the FLV measurement method and the SC method. Novel formulas based on the FLV measurement method were established using linear regression equations between the factors affecting pulmonary function and the measured values. RESULTS: The predicted postoperative forced vital capacity (ppoFVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (ppoFEV1) measured by the 2 methods showed high concordance between the actual postoperative forced vital capacity (postFVC) and the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (postFEV1) [r = 0.762, P < 0.001 (FLV method) and r = 0.759, P < 0.001 (SC method) for FVC; r = 0.790, P < 0.001 (FLV method) and r = 0.795, P < 0.001 (SC method) for FEV1]. Regression analysis showed that the measured preoperative pulmonary function parameters (FVC, FEV1) and the ratio of reduced FLV to preoperative FLV were significantly associated with the actual postoperative values and could predict these parameters (all P < 0.001). The feasibility of using these equations [postFVC = 0.8 × FVC - 0.784 × ΔFLV/FLV + 0.283 (R2 = 0.677, RSD = 0.338), postFEV1 = 0.766 × FEV1 - 0.694 × ΔFLV/FLV + 0.22 (R2 = 0.743, RSD = 0.265)] to predict the pulmonary function parameters after wedge resection was also verified. CONCLUSIONS: The new FLV measurement method is valuable for predicting postoperative pulmonary function in patients undergoing lung resection surgery, with accuracy and consistency similar to those of the conventional SC method.

ABSTRACT

There are many reports on g-C3N4 nanosheet and BiOCl nanosheet, but few studies on other morphologies of g-C3N4 and BiOCl. Herein, a g-C3N4 nanoball/BiOCl nanotube heterojunction prepared by a simple one-step acetonitrile solvothermal method is reported. The XRD results prove that the g-C3N4/BiOCl composites can be prepared in one step. SEM results revealed that the g-C3N4 was spherical and the BiOCl was tubular. The HRTEM results indicate that g-C3N4 has an amorphous structure and that the (100) crystal plane of BiOCl borders the g-C3N4. Spherical g-C3N4 has a narrow band gap (approximately 1.94 eV), and the band gap of g-C3N4/BiOCl after modification was also narrow. When the BiOCl accounted for 30% of the g-C3N4/BiOCl by mass, the quasi-primary reaction rate constant of RhB degradation was 45 times that of g-C3N4. This successful preparation method for optimizing g-C3N4 involving simple one-step template-free synthesis may be adopted for the preparation of diverse-shapes and high-performance nanomaterials in the future.

ABSTRACT

Thymic neoplasms are rarely seen among patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) and appear to be especially rare when pathological examination reveals a World Health Organization Type AB thymoma. In the case presented here, we report a 39-year-old woman with Type AB thymoma in MEN1. A 7.8-cm-sized mediastinal mass was diagnosed as a thymic neoplasm by computed tomography. In addition, pituitary tumor and hypercalcemia from parathyroid hyperplasia were found. Therefore, the patient was clinically diagnosed with MEN1 syndrome and underwent surgical resection of thymic tumor. At the 1-year follow-up, the patient appeared to be healthy without any sign of reoccurrence. Despite its rare occurrence, our case provides us with a new awareness that thymoma may coexist with MEN1.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare accelerated and delayed weight-bearing rehabilitation of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction regarding clinical outcome measures of knee function (International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (IKDC), Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale, Tegner Activity Scale, and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS)), knee laxity, range of movement, quadriceps, and bone tunnel enlargement. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Systematic searches of Embase, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library databases, from inception to February 2021, for studies comparing delayed or accelerated weight-bearing rehabilitation protocol after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in adult patients. RESULTS: Nine studies met the eligibility criteria. A meta-analysis revealed a higher risk of knee laxity in the accelerated weight-bearing group. Accelerated weight-bearing may be related to higher IKDC scores, while there was no statistical difference for Lysholm, Tegner, and KOOS scores at a follow-up within 2 years. Four of 5 studies reported no statistical difference for quadriceps strength and range of movement scores, while 2 studies reported bone tunnel enlargement in the accelerated weight-bearing group. CONCLUSION: This systematic review confirmed that accelerated weight-bearing caused more serious knee laxity and bone tunnel widening than delayed weight-bearing after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. We therefore recommend that clinicians should select postoperative rehabilitation programmes with caution.

ABSTRACT

Postoperative diaphragmatic hernia (DH) following endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for primary palmar hyperhidrosis is extremely rare. We present a 21-year-old female patient who developed a left DH with herniation of the stomach and gastric perforation on the first postoperative day after undergoing bilateral video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy R4 ablation. She complained of severe dyspnea and chest pain, and an emergency chest x-ray and computed tomography revealed left pleural effusion, collapsed lung, and left DH, which allowed the stomach to herniate into the chest. Emergency thoracoscopic surgery was performed. We repaired the diaphragmatic defect intraoperatively and replaced the stomach with the peritoneal cavity from the thoracic field. The patient was discharged without complications. She did not present with recurrent symptoms at the 3-month follow-up. Postoperative DH should be considered when patients complain of gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms after sympathectomy, although it is very rare.
