ABSTRACT

An elevated serum thyroglobulin level has been demonstrated in patients with cold nodules, without determination of the exact cause. In this preliminary study, we examined thyroglobulin production in vitro by cells from cold nodules and compared it to that of normal cells taken from the contralateral lobe of the same patient. Cells were cultured in monolayer and in collagen gel. Differences were observed between normal and pathological cells depending upon the culture model. We have attempted to interpret these differences which could result from anomalies in the pathological cells at the level of the apical membrane.

ABSTRACT

Considering recent progress which permits routine direct estimation of circulating iodinated hormones, classical investigations based on plasma iodine fractions (PBI 127, BEI 127, 127 IH) must be considered out of date for the routine diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. The best possible approach for the detection of hyperthyroidism by radio-isotope tests in vitro consists of associating a determination of the free thyroxine index and tri-iodothyronine. Certain types of hyperthyroidism, mainly in the goup of toxic adenomas, escape this detection in vitro, and justify the use of conventional in vivo tests whenever this diagnosis is suspected.

ABSTRACT

This report analyses quantitative data collected during spontaneous examination in normal subjects and in hypothyroid subjects, attempting to determine what figures obtained in this way can provide in the diagnosis of this disease. 125I tests in vitro today play a very important role and suffice der detection provided radio-immunoassay is carried out, whether the latter concerns iodine hormones or the thyreotropic pituitary hormone and provided the diagnosis is not confirmed by one single examination. The 131I kinetic test helps in classification of the hypothyroidism. Naturally, only further tests will permit us to determine certain causes (thyroid scan, Querido's test, TRF test, anionic competition, immunological study, etc.). Chemical estimations of stable iodine (127I) no longer have any place in this routine assessment, except that the total iodine is essential to interpret the kinetics in vivo.

ABSTRACT

The dosage of calcitonin was done in 13 thyroid carcinoma and 71 begnin thyroid tumors. In one case, the preoperative diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma (M.T.C.) was alloved; in one another case of M.T.C. the repeatted dosage allows the evolution survey and the exploration of the family; in a third case, the dosage allows to doubt the diagnosis of M.T.C. in post-mortem. In 71 cases of begnin thyroid tumors, the calcitonin immunoassay is in the normal range. The interest and limits of the preoperative dosage was drawn of this experience.
