ABSTRACT

Green rust (GR), as a vital intermediate product during the formation of various iron oxides, exists with organic matters and metals contaminants in natural environments. Understanding the effects of these natural factors on the transformation process of GR into iron oxides and the environmental behaviors of heavy metals and organic matters during process are critical for environmental quality management, but the fundamental identification of the interaction mechanisms between them and GR is still challenging. In this study, the transformation mechanisms of Co-bearing green rust (GR-Co) synthesized by co-precipitation, and the redistribution behaviors of Co(II) in an environment containing oxalic acid (OA) and citric acid (CA) were clarified. The findings indicated that OA promoted the Fe(II) dissolution and the transformation of GR-Co to goethite, while CA decreased the Fe(II) dissolution and the proportion of non-extractable Co. Furthermore, in the presence of CA, the transformation products of GR-Co were ferrihydrite, magnetite, lepidocrocite and goethite instead of only lepidocrocite and goethite. Meanwhile, CA prohibited ferrihydrite from transforming into more highly crystalline iron minerals. The finding of this study improves the understanding of the interaction mechanisms between GR-Co and organic matter, and the environmental geochemical behaviors of Co and organic carbon during the transformation processes in nature.

ABSTRACT

Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a typical environmentally organic pollutant, widely used in the production process of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to improve the flexibility of plastic materials. Its interaction with living organisms can inflict considerable harm to reproductive system functions. This research aims to utilize tetrahydrofuran (THF) to selectively break the chemical bonds in PVC molecules to provide more adsorption sites. Then incorporates the plasticizing assembly process of PVC to instantly remove and recover DEP from wastewater, achieving waste utilization, and sustainable environmental development. The research found that PTFR with a concentration of around 75 mg/L shows the best DEP removal efficiency. Sequencing batch processing removes more DEP compared to direct processing under the same material usage conditions. Furthermore, the recovery rate of DEP can reach over 90%. The technology demonstrates notable enhancements in removal efficiency and adsorption duration when compared to conventional adsorption techniques. This research has established an instant and efficient method for DEP removal, providing a new idea and technology for plasticizer treatment in practical wastewater.

ABSTRACT

Dietary tannic acid, as a natural polyphenolic, has many important biological activities. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary tannic acid on obesity and gut microbiota in mice with a high-fat diet. Male C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet were treated with dietary tannic acid for eight weeks. Results showed that dietary tannic acid reduced the body weight gain, regulated glycolipid metabolism, improved the insulin resistance, and attenuated the liver oxidative stress in high-fat diet-fed mice. Moreover, both dietary tannic acid intervention groups repaired the gut barrier damage caused by a high-fat diet, especially in the 50 mg/kg/d dietary tannic acid intervention group. Interestingly, the effect of dietary tannic acid on serum endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) content was correlated with the abundance of the LPS-producing microbiota. In addition, dietary tannic acid altered the abundance of obesity-related gut microbiota (Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Bacteroides, Alistipes, and Odoribacter) in the 150 mg/kg/d dietary tannic acid intervention group, while it was not effective in the 50 mg/kg/d dietary tannic acid intervention group. These findings suggested the potential effect of dietary tannic acid for the prevention and control of obesity.
